In June, the Virginia state bar issued a public reprimand against one such lawyer who crossed the ethical line, offering insight into how marketing can turn misleading\u2014and why honesty must come first.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"false-illusions-marketing-that-misrepresents\">False Illusions: Marketing That Misrepresents<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Virginia bar took aim at several deceptive practices:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u201cNational Law Firm\u201d fa\u00e7ade.<\/strong><br \/>The lawyer claimed to lead a multi\u2011lawyer, multi\u2011office practice in Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts\u2014even India\u2014when in reality he worked alone, contracting independent attorneys on commission.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Specialized expertise by each \u201cassociate.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>His website professed each attorney focused exclusively on one legal area. Truthfully, each took on generalist work.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Multiple Virginia offices myth.<\/strong><br \/>He claimed six offices, but five were just unstaffed executive suites available by reservation. That\u2019s an illusion you can\u2019t trust.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sausage-maker-ethics-you-cant-hide-the-grind\">Sausage Maker Ethics: You Can\u2019t Hide the Grind<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bob Ambrogi, no foe of promotion, argues that while the bar\u2019s public reprimand shows leniency, it shouldn\u2019t inspire others to obfuscate their operations.
