It\u2019s been pretty eventful since my last post. As that issue went out, I\u2019d just landed in New Zealand to field-test Yewki<\/a>, the snowboarding tracking app I\u2019ve been working on all year. I\u2019m very glad I did, there were quite a few bugs that only revealed themselves on the mountain.<\/p>\n

For the week, my routine was a full day of boarding followed by a full evening of coding. \u2019Twas intense! But it was also exactly the kind of real-world testing the app needed, and I\u2019m excited to finally ship it next week \ud83e\udd1e<\/p>\n

I also talked myself into an M5 Max with 128GB of RAM the night before the worldwide price increases, no less, which arrived last weekend. Coming from an M1 Max with 64GB, the difference genuinely feels like lightspeed<\/em>.<\/p>\n

On top of that, I was selected to speak at SwiftCon in October. I\u2019ll be presenting \u201cTokenmaxxing All the Way to the App Store\u201d<\/em>, where I\u2019ll share my odyssey of learning to maximise AI while building all aspects of Yewki. OpenAI: Apple is getting this wrong<\/a><\/p>\n

Things are getting heated in the Apple v. OpenAI dispute. OpenAI has publicly rebutted Apple\u2019s claims that it stole trade secrets, publishing a detailed statement that includes what it says are the receipts. Whatever the eventual outcome, it\u2019s a fascinating look at how quickly the relationship between platform owners and AI companies is becoming more heated and complicated. \ud83c\udf7f<\/p>\n

Code<\/h2>\n

Typed throws<\/a><\/p>\n

I remember when we first got do<\/code>\/try<\/code>\/catch<\/code>, and even back then I really wanted typed throws. It\u2019s great to see them finally arrive in Swift 6. Tibor has put together a neat, practical post explaining how they work, why they matter, and how they can make error handling clearer for both APIs and their callers.<\/p>\n

Type-safe JSON and JSONB in StructuredQueries<\/a><\/p>\n

Personally, I prefer SQLite over Core\/SwiftData, largely because I want a shared language between my iOS and Android apps. So I\u2019m all for making SQLite more pleasant and capable to use from Swift. The Point-Free folks have a neat update to their StructuredQueries library here, adding type-safe support for JSON and JSONB without giving up the ergonomics of a Swift-first API.<\/p>\n

Building Testable SwiftData Applications<\/a><\/p>\n

But if you\u2019d prefer SwiftData over SQLite, Azam has got you covered. He\u2019s written a great piece on building testable applications with SwiftData: what to do, what to avoid, some useful refactoring techniques, and plenty of code examples to boot. A worthwhile read if you want to keep your persistence layer from becoming tightly coupled to the rest of your app.<\/p>\n

Using SwiftUI’s ContentBuilder with non-View types<\/a><\/p>\n

Artem breaks down the new @ContentBuilder<\/code> API, and honestly, I had no idea this even existed until now. It\u2019s a clever example of SwiftUI\u2019s builder patterns being useful beyond composing views, and Artem walks through the idea clearly with practical examples. Definitely one to file away for the next time you\u2019re designing a more declarative API.<\/p>\n
