We call it deception. &#8211; The Understory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Mondel\u0113z International \u2014 the food giant behind Oreos, Cadbury, and Toblerone \u2014 has spent years cultivating an image as a sustainability leader, earning high environmental scores and pledging to eliminate deforestation and human rights abuses from its supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>Investigative reporting, however, reveals a starkly different reality: of a company that appears more focused on protecting its reputation than preventing harm to vulnerable people and the planet.<\/p>\n<p>For decades, Mondel\u0113z has faced scrutiny over its cocoa sourcing in West Africa, where child and forced labor are widely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norc.org\/content\/dam\/norc-org\/pdfs\/NORC%202020%20Cocoa%20Report_English.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">documented<\/a> and an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cocoainitiative.org\/issues\/child-labour-cocoa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">1.56 million children<\/a> work on cocoa farms. In 2022, a Channel 4 investigation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.confectioneryproduction.com\/news\/39202\/mondelez-faces-claims-of-cocoa-sector-child-labour-in-ghana-in-channel-4-documentary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">reported<\/a> that children as young as ten were using machetes to harvest cocoa pods on a Ghanaian farm allegedly linked to Mondel\u0113z.<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Mondel\u0113z has emphasized that such practices violate its policies and has pointed to its child labor monitoring <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.mondelezinternational.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/mondelez-international-scales-due-diligence-and-sector\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">system<\/a>. But that system does not cover all the farms in its supply chain, and the company lacks <a href=\"https:\/\/aidenvironment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Compliance-Checker_Mondelez_Profile_By-AidEnvironment.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">full traceability<\/a> for its cocoa \u2014 meaning it cannot determine whether child labor is involved in some of the cocoa it uses.<\/p>\n<p>Concerns extend beyond West Africa. In Brazil, Global Witness <a href=\"https:\/\/globalwitness.org\/en\/press-releases\/brazilian-palm-oil-firm-bbf-ramps-up-violence-against-indigenous-peoples-in-final-days-of-bolsonaro-rule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">reported<\/a> that Mondel\u0113z had sourced palm oil from producers allegedly linked to violent campaigns against Indigenous and traditional communities, including land grabbing and forced evictions. According to Global Witness, Mondel\u0113z did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Similar issues emerged elsewhere. Superior Court \u2014 Mondel\u0113z has refused RAN\u2019s calls to adopt a zero-tolerance policy on violence against land defenders.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than strengthening accountability, Mondel\u0113z has also taken a leading <a href=\"https:\/\/rainforestactionnetwork.substack.com\/p\/eu-hits-snooze-on-landmark-anti-deforestation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">role<\/a> in efforts to delay the European Union Deforestation Regulation, a law intended to hold companies accountable for deforestation and human rights abuses in commodity supply chains. That position has put Mondel\u0113z at odds with several of its industry peers, including Nestl\u00e9, Mars, and Ferrero, which opposed further delays.<\/p>\n<p>The Mondel\u0113z case raises a broader question about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortunebusinessinsights.com\/esg-investing-market-113824?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">$45 trillion<\/a> ESG investing market. If a company can receive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mondelezinternational.com\/news\/mondelez-all-a-scores-cdp-reporting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">top sustainability ratings<\/a> while documentary evidence links it to regulatory obstruction, deforestation, allegations of child labor, and reports of violence against land defenders, what exactly are those ratings measuring?<\/p>\n<p>Similar doubts apply to voluntary corporate policy commitments. Mondel\u0113z was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.confectioneryproduction.com\/news\/25669\/mondelez-international-confirms-its-cocoa-and-forests-initiative-sustainability-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">first company<\/a> to raise the issue of deforestation in the cocoa sector at the COP21 summit in Paris in 2015 and adopted a formal Human Rights Policy in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Those actions were meant to signal sustainability leadership to the public, investors, and regulators. But the evidence points elsewhere \u2014 to a company that embraces the language of responsibility without delivering its promises.<\/p>\n<p>The issue is no longer whether Mondel\u0113z has policies, which it clearly does.
