Today is the anniversary of Richard Nixon\u2019s resignation, which means it is a good day to contemplate one of history\u2019s great missed opportunities:<\/p>\n

What if Richard Nixon had Donald Trump\u2019s political machine?<\/p>\n

Think about it.<\/p>\n

Nixon had the tapes. He had the break-in. He had the cover-up. He had the enemies list. He had the plumbers. He had a president\u2019s pathological belief that everyone was out to get him. \u00a0Frankly, he had the r\u00e9sum\u00e9. What he didn\u2019t have was the modern Republican Party. And that, historians, is where things might have gotten interesting.<\/p>\n

Imagine Nixon walking into the White House briefing room in 1974 with Karoline Leavitt standing behind the podium.<\/p>\n

A reporter asks: \u201cDid the president know about the Watergate break-in?\u201d<\/p>\n

Leavitt smiles.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me be very clear: The American people are tired of the fake news media obsessing over a five-man burglary team when President Nixon is delivering historic results for the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the burglars worked for Nixon\u2019s reelection campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s your characterization.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were arrested inside Democratic headquarters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAgain, you\u2019re obsessed with the past.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were caught breaking in.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy don\u2019t you ask me about inflation?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut inflation is 12 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cExactly. Thank you for making my point.\u201d<\/p>\n

And that would be the briefing.<\/p>\n

Every day.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Nixon\u2019s congressional allies would discover the modern political miracle: There is apparently no scandal so large that it cannot be converted into an attack on Democrats.<\/p>\n

The impeachment hearings would begin. Republicans would immediately demand an investigation into the investigators. Then an investigation into the investigation of the investigators. Then a congressional hearing into why Congress was holding too many hearings.<\/p>\n

One senator would announce, \u201cWe need to stop weaponizing the word \u2018Watergate.\u2019\u201d \u00a0Another would say, \u201cNobody has proven that the president personally broke into the DNC.\u201d A third would ask, with a straight face, \u201cWhy aren\u2019t we investigating the DNC\u2019s security failures?\u201d \u00a0And somewhere, inevitably, someone would say: \u201cMaybe they shouldn\u2019t have had such stealable documents.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead of three television networks and a handful of newspapers, Nixon would have an entire conservative information ecosystem operating around the clock.<\/p>\n

The Washington Post runs a front-page story: NIXON WHITE HOUSE HID WATERGATE EVIDENCE.<\/p>\n

The response on cable television:<\/p>\n

WATERGATE: THE REAL STORY BEHIND THE MEDIA\u2019S OBSESSION<\/p>\n

A panel of four men would spend ninety minutes explaining that Bob Woodward is angry because Nixon didn\u2019t give him a better parking space. \u00a0Another commentator would reveal that Carl Bernstein once attended a cocktail party with a Democrat. \u201cMake of that what you will.\u201d \u00a0Fox News\u2014if Fox News existed\u2014would run a chyron reading: \u00a0NIXON UNDER ATTACK: IS THE PRESIDENT TOO EFFECTIVE?<\/p>\n

Sean Hannity, transported mysteriously back to 1974, would open his show: \u00a0\u201cTonight: The Watergate hoax. Five burglars. Zero evidence of wrongdoing by the president. And why the liberal media hates America.\u201d \u00a0Then he\u2019d spend the next hour asking why Democrats weren\u2019t talking about crime.<\/p>\n

Nixon\u2019s tapes would be released. \u00a0Normally, that would be devastating. \u00a0But in the Trump era, the White House would simply call them \u201cdoctored.\u201d \u00a0Experts would explain that the tapes were authentic. \u00a0The White House would say, \u201cThat\u2019s your opinion.\u201d \u00a0The experts would say, \u201cWe can literally hear the president.\u201d \u00a0The White House would respond, \u201cYou\u2019re obsessed.\u201d<\/p>\n

And suddenly the debate would no longer be whether Nixon obstructed justice. \u00a0It would be whether the person who leaked the tape was sufficiently patriotic.<\/p>\n

Nixon would also discover the modern political art of turning every legal proceeding into a campaign rally. \u00a0Instead of appearing before Congress, he would fly around the country telling supporters that Democrats were trying to steal the presidency. \u00a0He\u2019d hold a rally in Ohio.<\/p>\n

\u201cFolks, they hate us because we\u2019re strong. They hate me because I got more votes than anybody expected. Nobody has ever seen anything like this Watergate thing. It\u2019s a witch hunt.\u201d<\/p>\n

The crowd would roar.<\/p>\n

Someone would sell MAKE WATERGATE GREAT AGAIN hats.<\/p>\n

Another would sell shirts reading I STAND WITH NIXON.<\/p>\n

Someone would inevitably produce a gold-colored commemorative mug shaped like a tape recorder.<\/p>\n

And the fundraising emails would write themselves:<\/p>\n

Friend,<\/p>\n

THE RADICAL LEFT WANTS TO REMOVE PRESIDENT NIXON FROM OFFICE.<\/p>\n

Why? Because he is too strong.<\/p>\n

We need 10,000 patriots to donate $19.74 before midnight.<\/p>\n

This is your FINAL CHANCE.<\/p>\n

DONATE NOW<\/p>\n

There would be no final chance. \u00a0There would be another email tomorrow. \u00a0And another one the day after that.Eventually, Nixon would simply refuse to leave.<\/p>\n

Republican senators would appear on television and explain that resignation would \u201creward the Democrats.\u201dSomeone would say that impeachment was unconstitutional because it was \u201cclearly partisan.\u201d \u00a0Someone else would point out that impeachment is literally in the Constitution.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what the Democrats want you to believe.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Supreme Court might order Nixon to turn over the tapes. Nixon would say he disagrees. \u00a0The Court would say the president is not above the law. \u00a0Nixon\u2019s supporters would reply: \u00a0\u201cThat\u2019s exactly what the Deep State wants you to think.\u201d<\/p>\n

Watergate would cease to be a scandal. \u00a0It would become content. Every revelation would generate another outrage cycle. Every indictment would produce another fundraising appeal. Every court ruling would be described as an attack on the president.<\/p>\n

And Nixon wouldn\u2019t resign. \u00a0He\u2019d announce that he was \u201cstrongly considering\u201d remaining in office. \u00a0Then he\u2019d say he had every right to remain. \u00a0Then he\u2019d say nobody had ever seen a president treated so unfairly. Then he\u2019d blame the media. Then the Democrats. Then the prosecutors. \u00a0Then the judges. Then Bob Woodward. \u00a0Then the people who installed the microphones. \u00a0Then, probably, the microphones themselves.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s the truly fascinating thing about imagining Nixon in today\u2019s political environment. \u00a0He wouldn\u2019t necessarily have been less corrupt. \u00a0He would simply have had better public relations.<\/p>\n

In 1974, enough Republicans eventually concluded that Nixon had crossed a line. \u00a0They put the Constitution ahead of the president. \u00a0Today, we\u2019d probably have a prime-time television special explaining why the Constitution itself had become part of the witch hunt.<\/p>\n

Nixon\u2019s greatest mistake wasn\u2019t Watergate. \u00a0It was bad timing. \u00a0He was born about 50 years too early.<\/p>\n

If he\u2019d had today\u2019s media ecosystem, today\u2019s congressional politics, today\u2019s social-media outrage machine and today\u2019s limitless capacity to turn accountability into victimhood, he might never have resigned. He might have discovered the most important rule of modern American politics: \u00a0You don\u2019t have to prove you\u2019re innocent. \u00a0You just have to convince your people that everyone investigating you is evil. \u00a0And if you can do that long enough?Congratulations. \u00a0The burglary is now the victim.<\/p>\n

The burglars are patriots. \u00a0The reporters are criminals. \u00a0The prosecutors are partisan. The judges are biased. The tapes are fake. \u00a0And Richard Nixon is the only man in America who can save the country from Richard Nixon.<\/p>\n

And JD Vance would be right. Watergate is a 12 hour story.<\/p>\n
