The tree is down, and the baubles are all stored away.\u00a0 I have always regarded January as a time to hunker down, be cosy and work your way through the abundance of chocolate in the house.\u00a0 I must say this Christmas I have been given gifts of a fabulous selection of some of my favourite Whiskies, of which I am delighted about. \u00a0 I have always thought the notion of \u201cdry\u201d January a bit cruel, especially for me, as I have been historically blessed by being gifted wonderful Whisky and the thought of it just looking at me would be too sad.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1206\" height=\"468\" src=\"https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Copeland-Distillery.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-231898\" style=\"aspect-ratio:2.576934138625252;width:730px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Copeland-Distillery.png 1206w, https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Copeland-Distillery-300x116.png 300w, https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Copeland-Distillery-768x298.png 768w, https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Copeland-Distillery-250x97.png 250w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1206px) 100vw, 1206px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amongst the gifts I received was a selection of the products produced by Copeland Distillery in Donaghadee, Northern Ireland, a distillery that I have previously reported on, so I thought it would be good to taste and report on a couple of the samples. \u00a0 Now there is a method in my madness \u2013 my dear wife enjoys gin, and her second choice of spirit would be rum, of which this selection has samples.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The selections are:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Merchants Quay \u2013 Single Grain Irish Whiskey<\/li>\n<li>Merchants Quay \u2013 Blended Irish Whiskey<\/li>\n<li>County Down \u2013 Irish Vodka<\/li>\n<li>Smugglers Reserve \u2013 Double Wood Rum<\/li>\n<li>Rhuberry Gin \u2013 Rhubarb &amp; Blackberry Gin<\/li>\n<li>Irish Gin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I thought what a good selection for a tasting and I am of the opinion that this kind of tasting is an ideal way to spend a bleak, cold January afternoon, plus involving my wife just improves domestic harmony, a must for all husbands.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whisky wife, Jacqueline, has chosen the Rhuberry Gin to taste and review. For my tasting, I have selected the Single Grain Irish Whiskey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lets now have a taste.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A unique Single Grain Irish whiskey aged for 5 years in American Bourbon barrels and finished in Moscatel wine casks and Pedro Xim\u00e9nez sherry cask.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"590\" height=\"1138\" src=\"https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Merchants-Quay-5-Year-Old-Single-Grain-Whiskey-70cl-46-_-www.ebay_.co_.uk_.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-231895\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.5184589697606827;width:164px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Merchants-Quay-5-Year-Old-Single-Grain-Whiskey-70cl-46-_-www.ebay_.co_.uk_.png 590w, https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Merchants-Quay-5-Year-Old-Single-Grain-Whiskey-70cl-46-_-www.ebay_.co_.uk_-156x300.png 156w, https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Merchants-Quay-5-Year-Old-Single-Grain-Whiskey-70cl-46-_-www.ebay_.co_.uk_-250x482.png 250w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Copeland, Merchants Quay Single Grain Irish Whiskey 46% Alc\/vol, 70 cl<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Colour<\/strong>\u2026Pale straw<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nose<\/strong>\u2026Sweet and delicate on the nose, lots of citrus notes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Taste<\/strong>\u2026Gentle on the palate, the sweetness is strong, sherry soaked sultanas, more lemon and orange notes, if adding water, use only a teardrop, very drinkable neat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Finish<\/strong>\u2026The sweetness remains in charge, together with all the citrus bursts, leaving a delightful tingle on the tongue<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A very special dram, keenly priced at under \u00a340.00. At the Whisky Boys\u2019 next non-Scotch Whisky tasting, this one will certainly be on the list of drams to taste.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Up next, we have Jacqueline\u2019s tasting of the Rhuberry Gin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This colourful gin is juniper-led with the rhubarb and blackberries all from County Down. This is a drink calling for a tall balloon glass with loads of ice, a little tonic and even a sprig of mint.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Finish<\/strong>\u2026The sweetness of the rhubarb and berries lingers longest.\u00a0 To me, the Rhubarb and Blackberry are perfectly balanced and very easy to sip.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a special flavoured gin costing <strong>\u00a323.75<\/strong> this would make a perfect gift.<\/p>\n<p><!--\/.pagination-->\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, that\u2019s another Festive period over.
