And if\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0the case, you know the feeling of sitting down at a restaurant and discovering they not only have your Virginia favorites available, but a few you\u00a0haven\u2019t\u00a0tried yet.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0a\u00a0good\u00a0day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s\u00a0exactly the feeling I had when I first visited Urbanna Pearl Oyster Tavern. When I learned that owner Shawn Pickett had built his entire beer program around Virginia-made craft beer \u2014 every single one, no exceptions \u2014 it was that visit that inspired me to launch this series for VA Craft Beer Magazine, celebrating the restaurants across the Commonwealth that are embracing Virginia\u2019s craft beer culture. Urbanna Pearl is where it all started.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The striking black exterior of Urbanna Pearl Oyster Tavern stands out from the moment you turn onto Cross Street in historic Urbanna, Virginia. Owner Shawn Pickett chose the name deliberately. \u201cUrbanna\u2019s kind of the pearl of the Rappahannock River,\u201d he says with a smile, and after spending time in this cozy space,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0hard to argue with him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shawn and his wife opened the doors on October 19th, 2024 \u2014 just two weeks before the Urbanna Oyster Festival \u2014 with little more than raw oysters and a handful of snacks. Word spread fast. Festival crowds\u00a0wandered in\u00a0curious about that black building just off the beaten path, and the rest, as Shawn puts it, was history.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you step inside, the front room\u00a0sets\u00a0the tone\u00a0immediately\u00a0\u2014 a small bar, several tables with black metal chairs, and a warm, welcoming energy that sits somewhere between a neighborhood pub and a proper tavern. A wine display wraps around a central column near the bar, offering a curated selection of Virginia favorites like Good Luck Cellars alongside wines from around the country for the connoisseurs in the room.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0cozy, unpretentious, and a perfect fit for Urbanna.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make your way toward the back and the vibe\u00a0shifts. The rear room\u00a0opens up\u00a0into something altogether different \u2014 knotty pine shiplap walls covered in vintage nautical maps and maritime art, a mounted black bear, rustic wood tables, a cowhide rug spread across the concrete floor, and an antler chandelier anchoring it all from above. It feels like a well-appointed old hunting lodge met a Chesapeake Bay waterman\u2019s den, and somehow it works perfectly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The oyster menu is the undisputed star, with eight roasted and fried preparations \u2014 each named after a town or landmark along the Rappahannock River. The Deltaville Breeze, Tappahannock Hog, Water View Herbs, and Fredericksburg Artillery are just a few that tell the story of the river from the Blue Ridge Mountains all the way to the Chesapeake. Beyond oysters, the menu offers Tavern Bites, fresh salads, a Charcuterie Board, and a Land &amp; Rivah sandwich section that splits neatly between land-based and seafood options \u2014 think a Cattleman roast beef on brioche alongside an Oyster Po Boy\u00a0or Crab Cake sandwich.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0a thoughtful, well-rounded menu that punches well above what\u00a0you\u2019d\u00a0expect from a cozy local tavern.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Now, about that beer list.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every single beer, cider, and ready-to-drink cocktail at Urbanna Pearl is Virginia-made. No\u00a0exceptions. The idea came from Shawn\u2019s wife, who grew up exploring Scott\u2019s Addition breweries and the Charlottesville scene. \u201cShe said all Virginia,\u201d Shawn recalls, \u201cand I just ran with it.\u201d The result is an impressively curated cooler spanning every style \u2014 Lagers, Pilsners, Ales, Wheats, IPAs, Porters, Stouts, Sours, and even Virginia Ciders \u2014 with\u00a0nearly 50\u00a0options to choose from. And if beer\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0your thing, the RTD cocktail list is equally all-Virginia, with standouts like the Belle Isle Transfusion, Waterbird Ranch Water, and the Coastal Cocktails Orange Crush leading the way. Honor Brewing\u2019s Honor Light leads beer sales, a nod to the strong veteran community in the area, while\u00a0Hardywood\u2019s\u00a0Richmond Lager and Devil\u2019s Backbone\u2019s Vienna Lager do a fine job converting the macro-loyal crowd one sip at a time \u2014 and more often than not, once they try one, they come back for another. Some even start working their way down the list.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0one of the things I admire most about what Shawn is doing.\u00a0He\u2019s\u00a0not just carrying the big names \u2014\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0actively championing smaller producers. Dragon Run Brewing out of King and Queen County just landed on the menu, and on the\u00a0day\u00a0I visited, their Pilsner was featured right on the chalkboard specials alongside beers from some of Virginia\u2019s most well-known breweries. To Shawn, a can from a small-batch operation deserves the same shelf space as one from a well-known regional brewery. \u201cI think it\u2019s cool to see a small place from King and Queen go against a\u00a0Hardywood,\u201d he says. Customers browsing the menu\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0necessarily know \u2014 or care \u2014 about a\u00a0brewery\u2019s\u00a0size. They just know if the beer is good. And Shawn has\u00a0his sights set\u00a0on eventually adding draft beer to the lineup, with Dragon Run among the breweries\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0been\u00a0talking to\u00a0about what that could look like.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shawn is also the man responsible for bringing Triple Crossing Brewing\u2019s Falcon Smash to the Middle Peninsula. After calling Brown Distributing directly to make the case, Brown in turn worked with the local distributor to get it into the regional pipeline \u2014 meaning you can now pick it up at your favorite local spots without making the trip to Richmond. You\u2019re welcome, Middlesex County.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking ahead, Shawn has big plans for the lot just behind the tavern. With some serious brush clearing and landscaping work, he envisions an outdoor beer garden with a water view, a small bar, and a spot for live acoustic music.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0an ambitious project \u2014\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0targeting\u00a0next summer \u2014 but given what\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0already built in less than a year,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0hard to bet against him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Urbanna Pearl Oyster Tavern is\u00a0located\u00a0at 161 Cross Street, Urbanna, Virginia.
