Almost one in 10 relating to Belfast contained calls for violence or paramilitary or vigilante action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Imran Ahmed, the chief executive of the Centre for Countering Digital Hate, said the data demonstrated that X had become \u201ca weapon of choice\u201d for hostile foreign actors seeking to manipulate shocking and divisive content.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Their goal, he added, was \u201cto amplify local tragedies and crises, intensify racist narratives, and incite violence in communities they have never set foot in and to whom they have no real connection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">A post from Musk after the life sentencing of the killer of 18-year-old Henry Nowak, who had been falsely accused of racism by police after being stabbed in Southampton, has been viewed more than 28m times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cLegacy mainstream media, same ones who wrote about George Floyd millions of times, are dead silent about Nowak,\u201d Musk posted shortly before 3pm on 2 June, in effect promoting his own platform at a time of heightened tension and disorder in the Hampshire port.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"48d936c0-73f6-4065-b28d-83bbec7eda9b\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-d9bay7\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-174mzkf\"><span class=\"dcr-vyhg7z\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1cipnsy\">Elon Musk posted about race and immigration in the UK twice as often as he did about SpaceX in the run-up to the aerospace company\u2019s IPO in June.<\/span> Photograph: Evelyn Hockstein\/Reuters<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2026\/jun\/03\/southampton-residents-shock-protest-violence-henry-nowak-murder\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Eleven police officers were injured<\/a> on the night of 2 June in Southampton as people claiming to protest over Nowak\u2019s murder marched to the site of his death. This followed a rally, addressed by the far-right activist Tommy Robinson, outside the city\u2019s main police station.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Musk is based in the US and has not visited the UK since November 2023. A Guardian analysis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2026\/jul\/04\/elon-musk-uk-race-immigration-spacex-ipo\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">last month<\/a> found he posted about race and immigration in the UK twice as often as he did about SpaceX in the run-up to the aerospace company\u2019s initial public offering in June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Security experts including Fiona Hill, a former adviser to the US and UK governments, have warned that the UK is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/apr\/27\/britain-becoming-soft-target-for-russian-propaganda-says-security-expert\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">soft target for online manipulation<\/a> by overseas actors because it does not take the idea of civil, or \u201cpsychological\u201d, defence seriously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Dr Julia Ebner, a researcher at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue and the University of Oxford, said flashpoint episodes such as in Southampton and Belfast had become \u201cstrategic events\u201d for far-right actors seeking to amplify and exploit them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThey are using the UK as a negative example, smearing the UK to promote their own narratives of western civilisational decay or social collapse,\u201d Ebner said. \u201cBut the other purpose is to influence UK politics, and European politics more widely,\u201d using crisis moments to \u201cpromote a strong, strengthened far-right wave across the world\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Four of the top 12 most-seen tweets came from UK accounts: two were by the leader of the Restore Britain party, Rupert Lowe, whom Musk has endorsed; another was from GB News, while the most popular, with 37.6m views, was written by the \u201canti-woke\u201d rightwing political commentator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2025\/feb\/22\/konstantin-kisin-anti-woke-libertarian-reluctantly-calls-himself-right-wing\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Konstantin Kisin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Other accounts located in the US were anonymous, though familiar. @EndWokeness posted a blurry still image of a black man attacking a white man in Belfast on 8 June, saying the full video was \u201ctoo graphic\u201d to post. It attracted 16.3m views.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The assault, a stabbing in which the victim, Stephen Ogilvie, lost an eye, prompted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2026\/jun\/11\/how-the-belfast-stabbing-was-the-spark-to-a-fuse-loaded-with-grievance-and-provocation\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">three nights of racially motivated rioting<\/a> targeting non-white people in Belfast. Last November, after the feature was introduced, X\u2019s then head of product, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nikitabier\/status\/1992820294864732411\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Nikita Bier, said it was more than 99% accurate<\/a>. When it was launched, it revealed that some pro-Scottish-independence accounts were based in Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">But there were <a href=\"https:\/\/ojs.aaai.org\/index.php\/ICWSM\/article\/view\/22139\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">signs of inauthenticity<\/a> in popular posts. Two of the top most-seen tweets came from the US-based C3 (@C_3C_3) account, accusing \u201clegacy media\u201d of not reporting about the Nowak case. Its profile picture is a baby wearing a Make America Great Again cap; the username has changed 14 times previously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">One UK account, which tweeted at least six times about the murder of Nowak, with almost 3,800 combined views, had changed its name more than 400 times. NewsSceneUK \u2013 subsequently changed to BritifyFooty \u2013 wrote in one tweet about the \u201chuge crowd of patriots outside #Southampton Police Station\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Accounts posting from overseas that changed their usernames more than 20 times included one in Kenya that wrote after the Belfast stabbing: \u201cWhen the state fails to protect people, the streets find their own language.\u201d Another, from Europe, described the Nowak case as \u201ca globalized, calculated and malicious evil\u201d affecting \u201cevery White person and every White nation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Close to a third \u2013 about 13,000 \u2013 of the Belfast and Southampton tweets, whether from the UK or abroad, were racist or anti-immigrant, according to the Guardian analysis. When analysed separately, a quarter of the posts that were only about Southampton were racist or anti-immigrant, compared with a third of those that were only about Belfast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">One UK-based poster, writing a day after the Belfast stabbing, claimed they hoped the attacker was British-born because \u201crace is the issue, not immigration status\u201d. The post registered 2m views.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Valerie Wirtschafter, an expert on online foreign influence operations from the Brookings Institution, a US thinktank, said she believed violent events such as those in Belfast and Southampton were \u201ca point of exploitation\u201d in which \u201coutside agitators\u201d had an opportunity to make a disproportionate impact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Their position was helped by X and other social media companies cutting content moderation, she said, but in particular by \u201calgorithms and how they collide with the basic cognitive processes of humans.
