As Pete Greig notes in The Prayer Course, the most basic, instinctive form of prayer is asking God for stuff because our Father loves to give good gifts.

Greig says, “Although God knows our need, He does still want us to articulate it to Him.”

That’s why Jesus includes this part of His Model Prayer, “Give us today our daily bread.” We’re recognizing our dependence upon God and His provision for our lives.

Through this example, we also recognize that our prayer requests should be made daily.
