{"id":7034785,"date":"2026-08-09T06:29:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-09T06:29:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/uncategorized\/put-god-first-because-no-one-likes-to-come-in-second\/"},"modified":"2026-08-09T06:29:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T06:29:11","slug":"put-god-first-because-no-one-likes-to-come-in-second","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=7034785","title":{"rendered":"Put God First (Because No One Likes to Come in Second)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\" style=\"padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0\">\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><cite>Matthew 6:33 NIV<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Feeling victorious, I emerged from the woodland path only to find the spectators were packing up to leave.\u00a0 I was a fifth-grader on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.candidlychristian.com\/mama-bear\/\">cross-country team<\/a> and had just finished my first three-mile run, dead last.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was not an athletic child.\u00a0However, I tried with all my heart.\u00a0Swimming, ice skating, horseback riding, volleyball, softball, basketball, dance lessons, and one embarrassing attempt at cross-country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second place in anything athletic was an unachievable goal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I felt victorious for just finishing the race; second place would have made me feel like an Olympian.\u00a0 However, second place as an adult doesn\u2019t hold the same magic as it did as a child.\u00a0 And God doesn\u2019t enjoy second place either.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When Second-Place Doesn\u2019t Feel Like a Prize<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Realizing my son\u2019s mother-in-law received a Mother\u2019s Day gift while I got a text feels like second place.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Seeing a picture on Facebook of friends attending an event I would have loved to participate in feels like second place.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Growing up with a gregarious, attention-seeking older sibling often felt like second place.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Having dealt with infidelity in my marriage was a second-place prize I would have preferred to return.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So when we put our family, jobs, church activities, money, or anything else before God, God is now in second place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We don\u2019t have to read very far into the Bible to learn that God doesn\u2019t accept second place. Exodus 20:5, Exodus 34:14, and Deuteronomy 4:24 instruct us that God is a jealous God, and we are to put no other gods before Him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Do We Need to Put God First?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:33, <em>\u201cBut seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because He first loved us.\u00a0 (1 John 4:19).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By seeking God first, in return, we are promised His Kingdom and righteousness.\u00a0 And His promise is fulfilled through the blood of Christ, His son. (John 3:16).\u00a0 There is no further proof needed of God\u2019s love for us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have won first place through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Does Putting God First Look Like?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Putting God first in our lives is not a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.candidlychristian.com\/new-years-resolution\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"4667\">New Year\u2019s resolution<\/a> or a chapter in a self-help book. It\u2019s an ongoing journey of growing our relationship with Jesus.\u00a0 It\u2019s a step-by-step process of faith, one decision, one change at a time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perfection is not the goal; growth is the goal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> <span class=\"bctt-click-to-tweet\"><span class=\"bctt-ctt-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.candidlychristian.com%2F%3Fp%3D84998&amp;text=Perfection%20is%20not%20the%20goal%3B%20growth%20is%20the%20goal.%C2%A0%20&amp;via=candidgals&amp;related=candidgals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Perfection is not the goal; growth is the goal.\u00a0 <\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.candidlychristian.com%2F%3Fp%3D84998&amp;text=Perfection%20is%20not%20the%20goal%3B%20growth%20is%20the%20goal.%C2%A0%20&amp;via=candidgals&amp;related=candidgals\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"bctt-ctt-btn\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Share on X<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If getting up at 4:00 a.m. to spend two hours on your knees is the place you start, you might find after three days you have failed.\u00a0 But for me, spending 20 minutes a day in quiet time with Jesus and my Bible before tackling my to-do list is a small step of discipline that brings me closer to Jesus.\u00a0Find what works for you.\u00a0\u00a0Because, friend, I know how it feels to come in second.
