Cobblestone streets. Medieval arcades. Bears by the river. Bern isn\u2019t Switzerland\u2019s most famous city\u2026but after two days here, it just might become your favorite too.<\/em><\/p>\n

Some cities dazzle you immediately.<\/p>\n

Bern whispers.<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t compete with the dramatic peaks of the Jungfrau or the glamour of Geneva<\/a> or Zurich<\/a>. Instead, Switzerland\u2019s capital invites you to slow your pace, wander beneath centuries-old green sandstone arcades, linger over meals in quiet squares, and discover that its greatest attractions aren\u2019t attractions at all, it\u2019s in the moments.<\/p>\n

We spent two wonderfully unhurried days exploring Bern. We crossed the Aare River more times than we could count, visited the Bear Park twice (because the bears apparently had better things to do the first day), climbed to panoramic viewpoints, immersed ourselves in world-class art, and joined a walking tour that revealed the fascinating stories hidden behind the city\u2019s famous fountains.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how we spent 48 hours in Bern.<\/p>\n

Day 1: Discover Bern\u2019s Historic Heart<\/h2>\n

Start with a Walking Tour<\/h3>\n

If there\u2019s one thing we\u2019d recommend doing first, it\u2019s joining a guided walking tour<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bern is beautiful on your own, but understanding why<\/em> it\u2019s beautiful transforms the experience.<\/p>\n

Our guide from Visit Bern brought the city to life through stories of medieval merchants, wealthy guilds, curious traditions, and the colorful Renaissance fountains that line almost every street. Suddenly the statues weren\u2019t just decorative\u2026they each had a story to tell.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll also learn why Bern has preserved its medieval layout so remarkably well, earning its UNESCO World Heritage designation.<\/p>\n

The tour naturally includes several of the city\u2019s most recognizable landmarks.<\/p>\n

Zytglogge Clock Tower<\/h3>\n

No visit to Bern is complete without standing beneath the famous astronomical clock.<\/p>\n

Every hour, small mechanical figures come alive in a performance that has delighted visitors for centuries. While many people simply stop for a photo, hearing the history behind this medieval masterpiece with the walking tour from Welcome Bern makes it even more fascinating.<\/p>\n

Tip: Time your visit so you are there at noon so you can hear the rooster, see the Jester pull the strings to ring two small bells, the bearded Chronos, father of time turn his hourglass over and the clock chime 12 times.<\/p>\n

Wander the Arcades<\/h3>\n

One of Bern\u2019s defining features is nearly four miles (6 km) of covered arcades.<\/p>\n

These sandstone walkways were built centuries ago to shelter shoppers from rain and snow, and today they\u2019re filled with boutiques, bookstores, caf\u00e9s, and artisan shops.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re one of the reasons Bern feels so relaxed\u2026 you can simply wander without worrying about the weather.<\/p>\n

Take your time. <\/p>\n

Duck into hidden courtyards.<\/p>\n

Browse local chocolate shops.<\/p>\n

Order a coffee. We especially like the Einstein cafe, located right below the Einstein Museum. <\/p>\n

This is what Bern does best.<\/p>\n

The Bern arcades reminded us of the long porticoes in Bologna<\/a> <\/p>\n

Bern Minster and M\u00fcnsterplattform<\/h3>\n

The Gothic Bern Minster dominates the skyline, but don\u2019t rush inside just yet.<\/p>\n

Instead, head around the back to the M\u00fcnsterplattform<\/strong>, the spacious terrace overlooking the Aare River.<\/p>\n

Locals picnic here.<\/p>\n

Students read beneath the trees.<\/p>\n

Families gather in the evenings.<\/p>\n

We loved it\u2026 at the golden hour it was even more magical.<\/p>\n

The views stretch across the red rooftops to the green hills beyond, making it one of the most peaceful spots in the city.<\/p>\n

If you have the energy, climb the cathedral tower for an even wider panorama.<\/p>\n

Tip: Don\u2019t miss the beautiful interior and the stainglass windows and the most importantly, the Last Judgment, a famous Gothic stone sculpture above the main entrance of the Bern Minster. It depicts Christ along with over 290 sandstone figures of angels, apostles, and the damned on the right side.<\/p>\n

Bear Park | B\u00e4renPark<\/h3>\n

No symbol represents Bern more than its bears. Even today, the bear is present on flags, fountains, and buildings all around Bern.<\/p>\n

The bears are pretty popular, in fact The Bear Park is one of the top attractions in not just Bern but all of Switzerland \ud83c\udde8\ud83c\udded <\/p>\n

Naturally, our first stop was the Bear Park.<\/p>\n

Except\u2026<\/p>\n

The bears had apparently decided it was nap time.<\/p>\n

We searched every corner of the large riverside enclosure before accepting defeat. We took the B\u00e4reB\u00e4hnli<\/em> (Bear Train) down to the river to see they were swimming in the water to cool off the summer heat. <\/p>\n

No bears. The only bear we saw was this cute Teddy Bear statue!<\/p>\n

Rather than being disappointed, we laughed and decided we\u2019d simply come back tomorrow.<\/p>\n

As it turns out, that became one of our favorite memories of Bern.<\/p>\n

Slow travel sometimes means accepting that nature\u2026and bears\u2026operate on their own schedule.<\/p>\n

Dinner on the Square<\/h3>\n

We decided to have dinner at Ristorante Luce, a lovely Italian place on the Square. At dusk the lights came on and music started playing on a small stage near by and locals were dancing to tango music\u2026 adding a lovely ambience.<\/p>\n

As daylight fades, Bern becomes even quieter, and the city feels almost timeless.<\/p>\n

Alternatively, you can have dinner overlooking the turquoise waters of the Aare River before wandering back through the softly lit Old Town.<\/p>\n

Day 2: Art, Views and a Second Chance with the Bears<\/h2>\n

Paul Klee Center | Zentrum Paul Klee<\/h3>\n

Even if you\u2019re not an art enthusiast, the Paul Klee Center is worth visiting.<\/p>\n

Designed by Renzo Piano, the museum appears to rise gently from the surrounding landscape like three rolling hills.<\/p>\n

The architecture of Zentrum Paul Klee alone is worth the visit.<\/p>\n

It was a clear day when we visited, we could see the Bernese Oberland Mountain ranges from the window of bus 12 we had taken from the Zytglogge.<\/p>\n

Inside is the world\u2019s largest collection of works by Swiss-German artist Paul Klee, whose playful colors and abstract compositions continue to inspire artists around the world. There were watercolors, drawings and so many of his works on display as part of Kosmos Klee, The Collection.<\/p>\n

Kunstmuseum Bern<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Continue your artistic journey at the Kunstmuseum Bern.<\/p>\n

Switzerland\u2019s oldest fine arts museum houses works spanning centuries, from Old Masters to modern art.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an excellent complement to the Paul Klee Center and provides a broader perspective on Swiss and European art.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, we spent so much time at the Paul Klee center and ran out of time during our 2 days, we have to visit Bern again to explore this art museum.<\/p>\n

Rose Garden (Rosengarten)<\/h3>\n

Few viewpoints rival the Rose Garden. Perched above the Old Town, it offers Bern\u2019s iconic postcard view.<\/p>\n

You can see the looping Aare River wraps around the medieval city while church spires rise above rows of terracotta rooftops.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re visiting in summer, hundreds of roses bloom throughout the gardens, making it an ideal place for a leisurely picnic. My favorite were the waterlilies. <\/p>\n

Don\u2019t miss to say hello to Einstein who is seen sitting on a bench here.<\/p>\n

Bear Park<\/strong>, Take Two<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Remember those elusive bears? This time we found them.<\/p>\n

Watching them wander through their expansive riverside habitat somehow felt more rewarding because we\u2019d had to come back.<\/p>\n

It became a reminder that travel isn\u2019t always about checking off landmarks.<\/p>\n

Sometimes it\u2019s simply about returning.<\/p>\n

Ride the Gurtenbahn<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In the afternoon, took Tram 9 and then we hopped aboard the Gurten funicular.<\/p>\n

Within minutes you\u2019re transported from the city into peaceful green meadows overlooking Bern.<\/p>\n

At the summit you\u2019ll find walking trails, caf\u00e9s, panoramic viewpoints, and one of the best views of the Swiss capital framed by distant alpine peaks. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s where many locals escape after work, and it\u2019s easy to understand why. <\/p>\n

There was a little kiddie park, a small train for the kids and a taboggan which is fun for both adults and kids. I loved it!<\/p>\n

Watching the sun drift across the rooftops from Gurten is the perfect ending to two leisurely days.<\/p>\n

Bern\u2019s Bundesplatz<\/h2>\n

Bern\u2019s Bundesplatz, the square is bordered by three major civic institutions: the
Bundeshaus to the south, the Swiss National Bank to the east, and the
Bernese Cantonal Bank to the west.<\/p>\n

During an extensive dome renovations, the Swiss cross on top was gilded with gold leaf.<\/p>\n

It was fun to watch the kids run around in the 23 fountains here that represent the cantons of Switzerland. <\/p>\n

You can also sign up for guided tours inside Bundeshaus<\/em>, the Parliament building.<\/p>\n

\n

Where to Stay in Bern<\/h2>\n

For our two nights in Bern, we stayed at Hotel Savoy Bern<\/strong>, and it couldn\u2019t have been a better base for exploring the city. Tucked just a few minutes\u2019 walk from the train station and the UNESCO-listed Old Town, its central location meant we could easily stroll to the Zytglogge, the arcaded shopping streets, and many of Bern\u2019s top attractions without ever needing public transport.<\/p>\n

The hotel strikes a nice balance between boutique charm and modern comfort. Our room was clean, thoughtfully designed, and surprisingly quiet despite being in the heart of the city. What stood out most, though, was the genuinely friendly staff, who were always happy to offer recommendations and make us feel welcome.<\/p>\n

Each morning started with a breakfast featuring fresh breads, pastries, local cheeses, fruit\u2026the perfect way to fuel a day of wandering Bern\u2019s historic streets.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re looking for a comfortable, well-located boutique hotel that offers excellent value in Switzerland\u2019s capital, Hotel Savoy Bern is an easy recommendation.<\/p>\n

Why Bern Captured Our Hearts<\/h2>\n

Bern isn\u2019t packed with headline attractions. There are no dramatic mountain gondolas. No famous luxury shopping streets. No frantic sightseeing schedule.<\/p>\n

Instead, it offers something increasingly rare: permission to slow down.<\/p>\n

You notice the fountains.<\/p>\n

The sound of the river.<\/p>\n

The rhythm of locals cycling beneath medieval arcades.<\/p>\n

The laughter drifting from riverside caf\u00e9s and squares.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the kind of city where doing less somehow feels like experiencing more.<\/p>\n

After two days, we left feeling refreshed rather than exhausted.<\/p>\n

And perhaps that\u2019s Bern\u2019s greatest luxury.<\/p>\n

The lobby and the beautiful stained glass roof at The Bellevue Palace, a meeting place for politicians and diplomats, but also an informal gathering spot for all of Bern. Great for some coffee or aperitif. <\/p>\n

Saint Christophorus, the patron saint of Travelers<\/h2>\n

A plastic cast replica of the original late-gothic head of Saint Christopher stands near the medieval foundations of the old Christoffel Gate in the underground Christoffelpassage at the Bern Train Station. <\/p>\n

The original 15th-century wooden statue was torn down with the Christoffelturm in 1865, and its surviving original head is preserved in the Bernisches Historisches Museum.<\/p>\n
