Much\u00a0attention is\u00a0paid to the tactics of ethics \u2013 the ethics codes, compliance plans and such. We can easily begin to think that ethics is something we\u00a0can see and touch. Something finite. Something written in stone. Something outside of ourselves.<\/p>\n

\n

But that\u2019s not where ethics lives.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Our ethics doesn\u2019t live in the codes and manuals. Ethics is in the big and small things we do each day. It\u2019s in the time we take to teach employees about ethics and values, and the care we take to\u00a0model ethical behavior so that everyone can see what it looks like in action.<\/p>\n

Ethics is in the decisions we make. It\u2019s in the way we resolve the tension between gaining personal benefit and creating value for others.<\/p>\n

Ethics is not just \u201cout there\u201d and it\u2019s not just what\u2019s written down.\u00a0Ethical guidelines are there to help us,\u00a0but they do not become our\u00a0ethics unless we choose to follow\u00a0them every day.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ethics is personal. It\u2019s about us and our choices.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

For leaders, ethics is about personal choices that set the tone for their organizations. It\u2019s about the daily struggle to figure out \u201cthe right thing to do\u201d in difficult situations. It\u2019s about a deeply personal commitment to lead in ways that demonstrate:<\/p>\n
