The legendary gathering, which began Friday and runs through Aug. 16, draws both first-timers and veterans who have made the pilgrimage for decades. Amid the freedom, chrome and nonstop party atmosphere, a set of unwritten rules governs the streets and campgrounds. Break them, and a good time can turn ugly fast.

Bob Pruitt, known as Pretty Bobbie, has more than 45 years in the saddle and multiple Sturgis trips under his belt. His core message is simple: have fun, pay attention and learn the rules before you break one.

Rule one is hands off. Never sit on, lean against or climb onto another rider’s motorcycle. “You want to touch a motorcycle, get your own,” Pruitt said. These machines range from hard-ridden Harleys to meticulously customized bikes that represent a rider’s identity and major investment.

Rule two: don’t play biker. Showing up in unearned motorcycle club “cuts” or patches, especially the wrong territory rockers, can draw serious trouble. True 1% insignia, veterans note, is not fashion.

Rule three and four center on respect and restraint. Alcohol fuels most problems. Talking trash, asking intrusive questions or getting overly friendly with someone’s “old lady” — a term of deep respect meaning a rider will “kill for her” — is a fast track to conflict. A simple nod tests the waters; if none is returned, leave the person alone.

Rule five stresses road awareness. Riders often signal one another about hazards, a practice that can prevent crashes on crowded highways already seeing injuries and fatalities in past rallies.

Finally, the most important rule: actually have a good time. Happy riders create fewer problems. Whether rough-and-rowdy or mellow, Sturgis offers freedom to each visitor — as long as they mind their manners.

First-timer Sean “Grout” Severs of Sheridan is learning these lessons from veteran companion “Coach.” For him and countless others, the vibe of shared chrome and open road is the draw. Just follow the code, veterans say, and the only thing that should get kicked is the throttle.

Spies, have you ever been or would you go? And what is YOUR opinion of the event? Discuss…
