Plateau United Football Club has come under criticism from some football supporters following the unveiling of its new club logo ahead of the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

The Jos-based club unveiled the redesigned crest on Friday, August 7, as part of preparations for the new campaign. The announcement was circulated across social media, with the new identity featuring the club’s name and its establishment year, 1975. (Instagram)

However, the redesign has generated mixed reactions among supporters and football followers online, with some questioning the decision to replace the club’s familiar emblem.

The criticism appears to centre largely on the visual identity of the new crest, with some fans expressing a preference for the traditional logo and arguing that the new design does not sufficiently reflect the history and identity associated with Plateau United.

The reaction highlights the emotional significance football club crests hold for supporters, particularly for established clubs with decades of history. Plateau United, one of Nigeria’s recognised top-flight clubs, traces its identity to 1975 and has enjoyed major success, including winning the Nigerian top-flight league title in 2017.

The timing of the logo change also comes as the NPFL prepares for the 2026/27 season, which is scheduled to begin on August 28, 2026. Plateau United will begin its campaign away from home against Rivers United in Port Harcourt.

The club’s management has yet to publicly respond to the criticism or explain the design choices behind the new crest.

Despite the backlash, the unveiling marks an attempt by Plateau United to refresh its visual identity as it enters a new season, with the club expected to balance modern branding with the heritage and traditions that have made the “Peace Boys” one of Plateau State’s most prominent sporting institutions.

The debate over the new logo is likely to continue as supporters adjust to the new identity and the club begins its preparations for another NPFL campaign.

Check out some comments from online platforms…
