Wrexham Lager\u2019s<\/b> name and brewery have been revived, and the story is a rather fascinating one.<\/strong> The revival began in 2011<\/strong>, when the Roberts family<\/strong> brought the
\nhistoric brand back to life after its original brewery closed in 2000<\/strong> and production ceased
\nentirely in 2002<\/strong>. The
\nhistoric Wrexham Lager<\/b><\/em> name
\nwas rescued, the brewery rebuilt, and production restarted using original
\nrecipes. But what about the history of the original Wrexham Lager Brewery,<\/b> and
\nits pioneering beer?<\/span><\/p>\n

Wrexham Lager <\/a><\/b>isn\u2019t just a local beer; it\u2019s a piece of
\nBritish brewing<\/b> history. It was
\nfounded in 1881<\/strong>, by German<\/b> immigrants Ivan Levinstein<\/strong> and Otto Isler<\/strong>, and was Britain\u2019s first lager brewery<\/strong>.
\nIn the beginning, the pair attempted traditional cold\u2011fermentation techniques,
\nusing ice banks, but early batches suffered because temperatures couldn\u2019t be
\nkept low enough. Then a chance partnership with German <\/b>engineer Robert Graesser,<\/strong> introduced mechanical refrigeration<\/strong>,
\nsolving the temperature problem and enabling consistent lager production. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Graesse<\/b>r was a German\u2011born<\/b>
\nindustrialist<\/strong> living in North Wales<\/b> in the late 19th century.<\/b>
\nHe owned a\u00a0chemical works in Acrefair,
\nDenbighshire<\/strong>, and was known for his engineering expertise \u2014
\nparticularly mechanical refrigeration<\/strong>,
\nwhich was cutting\u2011edge technology at the time. His background made him uniquely
\npositioned to solve the technical problems that plagued early lager brewing in
\nBritain.\u00a0<\/b>He was not one of the original founders, but without him,
\nWrexham Lager<\/b> would almost certainly have disappeared in the 1880’s.<\/b> Graesser<\/b> met Levinstein <\/b>by chance, reportedly o<\/b>n
\na train from Liverpool,<\/b> and realised his industrial refrigeration system
\ncould fix the problems being experienced by Levinstein<\/b> and Isler<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n

Graesser\u2019s <\/b>innovations enabled
\nWrexham Lager<\/b> to be brewed properly for the first time and led to Wrexham Lager<\/b>
\nbecoming the first commercially successful lager brewery in Britain<\/b>. He
\nlater took a major share<\/b> in the company in exchange for the technology
\nand gained full ownership<\/b> after the original company collapsed in
\n1886\u20131892.\u00a0<\/b>At the time Wrexham was home to around
\nnineteen breweries<\/b>, but the Ace of Clubs<\/b> brand, with its distinctive symbol
\nbecame the most famous, and was recognised far beyond Wales<\/b>. The beer <\/span>was
\nexported across the British Empire <\/b>and was reportedly the only lager served on the Titanic<\/strong>.
\nThere are accounts of Wrexham Lager <\/b>being consumed
\nby British troops overseas<\/b>, including during the Siege of Khartoum<\/b>
\n(1884\u201385). <\/b>These stories highlight how the beer travelled with soldiers across
\nimperial postings. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The brand’s exports decreased during World War II,<\/b> leading
\nto its purchase by Ind Coope<\/b>, and later Carlsberg-Tetley, <\/b>after a series of convoluted
\nmergers and takeovers. In 2000<\/b>, the original brewery was closed by Carlsberg<\/b> \u2013 a
\nbrewery that definitely doesn\u2019t brew the best beer in the world! Then in 2011<\/b>, former
\nMP<\/b> Martyn Jones<\/strong>,
\nonce a microbiologist at the brewery, acquired the rights to the brand, for
\njust \u00a31<\/b>, a sum that shows how little the Danes <\/b>regarded the heritage of Wrexham
\nLage<\/b>r. The brand itself was revived by the Roberts<\/b> family, using a recipe from
\nthe Wrexham<\/b> archives.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Local businessmen Mark and
\nVaughan Roberts<\/strong> rebuilt the brewery, using older recipes and
\noriginal ingredients to recreate the classic lager. As part of this exercise, they
\nconsulted former Wrexham<\/b> brewing staff and used archival brewing notes to ensure
\nauthenticity.\u00a0 <\/span>The revival restored a
\nbrand with deep cultural ties to Wrexham AFC<\/strong>,
\nlocal pubs, and Welsh <\/b>brewing heritage. The revived brewery is located in Bangor-on-Dee<\/strong>, near Wrexham,<\/b>
\nand not at the original Central Road <\/b>site, which was demolished and replaced by
\na retail park. However, the original
\nbrewhouse<\/strong> survives as a Grade II<\/b> listed building. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Wrexham<\/b> Lager<\/b> is historically
\nsignificant because it is:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Britain\u2019s first lager brewery<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

A pioneering user of mechanical
\nrefrigeration<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

A major Victorian export
\nbrand<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

A cultural symbol of Wrexham
\nand Welsh brewing heritage<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

A rare example of a historic
\nbeer brand successfully revived after total closure.<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The other week I picked up a
\n4-pack of Wrexham Lager <\/b>cans, at our local branch of Home Bargains<\/b>. Regrettably,
\ndespite all the history, the pedigree and the kudos associated with the relaunched
\nbrand, I found the beer lacking in bitterness, and at just 4.0% ABV, <\/b>the beer
\nwas rather weak for my tastes. <\/span><\/p>\n

However, seeing as the revived
\nbrand is based on a recipe that is over half a century old, it might well be that
\nWrexham Lager 2026<\/b> is very much the authentic taste, of the cold-fermented
\nbeers that were being brewed in the UK<\/b>, at the end of the last century, so do give the
\nbeer a try and let me know what you think.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
