{"id":7033177,"date":"2026-08-08T05:24:06","date_gmt":"2026-08-08T05:24:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/activist\/the-soy-industry-just-gutted-the-amazons-best-protection-the-understory\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T05:24:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T05:24:06","slug":"the-soy-industry-just-gutted-the-amazons-best-protection-the-understory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=7033177","title":{"rendered":"The soy industry just gutted the Amazon\u2019s best protection &#8211; The Understory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">The agreement that kept the Amazon rainforest from turning into a giant soybean field is falling apart after the industry body representing some of the world\u2019s biggest grain traders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/the-understory\/soy-moratorium-collapsing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">backed out<\/a> of it.<\/p>\n<p>For 13 years, deforestation was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/brasil\/blog\/retrocesso-associacao-das-gigantes-da-soja-abandona-a-moratoria-da-soja-e-coloca-a-amazonia-em-risco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">down<\/a> 69% in monitored parts of the Amazon rainforest that fell under the Amazon Soy Moratorium\u2019s protections, an agreement that came about in 2006 to control soy \u2014 one of the Amazon\u2019s biggest deforestation drivers.<\/p>\n<p>The traders \u2014 Cargill, ADM, Bunge, Louis Dreyfus, COFCO, and Amaggi \u2013 command more than <a href=\"https:\/\/trase.earth\/explore\/supply-chain\/brazil\/soy?utm_source=explore_data_card&amp;chartType=sankey&amp;year=2022&amp;indicator=volume&amp;hideDomestic=false&amp;dimension=exporter_group&amp;dimension=economic_bloc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">half<\/a> of Brazil\u2019s soy exports, meaning the moratorium\u2019s protections are now effectively gone for the majority of the market.<\/p>\n<p>Traders left the moratorium after sustained lobbying led to the <a href=\"https:\/\/agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br\/meio-ambiente\/noticia\/2026-01\/lei-que-pune-participantes-da-moratoria-da-soja-volta-valer-em-mt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">removal<\/a> of tax incentives that encouraged compliance, and the timing could not be worse. The EU\u2019s delay of its deforestation regulation and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/news\/eu-mercosur-trade-deal-what-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">new deal<\/a> to increase Brazilian agricultural imports to Europe could drive further soy expansion in the Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers warn that the consequences could be severe, projecting a 30% <a href=\"https:\/\/agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br\/meio-ambiente\/noticia\/2026-01\/exportadores-de-soja-deixam-acordo-sobre-desmatamento-na-amazonia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">increase<\/a> in deforestation by 2045 that could accelerate the Amazon\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-023-06970-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">collapse<\/a> into a fire-prone savannah.<\/p>\n<p>The financial institutions that provided $75 billion in <a href=\"https:\/\/forestsandfinance.org\/data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">loans<\/a> and underwriting to Brazil\u2019s soy sector are now sitting on a major quandary. Citibank, Bank of America, BNP Paribas, and Barclays are the biggest backers of Cargill, ADM, Bunge and Louis Dreyfus. All of these banks have made commitments to address deforestation. They now have a choice to make.<\/p>\n<p>RAN and allies have <a href=\"https:\/\/forestsandfinance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/FFC-2026-ASM-Joint-letter-to-financial-institutions.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">written<\/a> to these banks demanding that they use their financial leverage to push traders to recommit to the moratorium\u2019s basic terms, including a rejection of all Amazon deforestation. But banks\u2019 sustainability commitments and financing activities do not always align without sustained public pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil\u2019s Indigenous movement continues to be one of the most important forces against Amazon destruction. This February, Indigenous communities <a href=\"https:\/\/amazonwatch.org\/news\/2026\/0223-indigenous-resistance-forces-brazil-to-revoke-amazon-waterway-decree-after-33-days-of-occupation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">occupied<\/a> Cargill\u2019s port in Santar\u00e9m, Par\u00e1 for 33 days until the government canceled the privatization of major Amazon rivers to turn them into waterways for soy export capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Their victory showed that endless soy expansion is not inevitable, it\u2019s vulnerable to political and economic pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the spotlight is back on the banks: if they\u2019re serious about their \u201cNo Deforestation\u201d commitments, they have the leverage to force the world\u2019s largest soy traders back to the table.
