[Forty years ago this week, the Space Shuttle Challenger<\/i>
\nbroke apart upon takeoff, instantly becoming one of the most visible and tragic
\nAmerican stories of the last half-century. So this week I\u2019ll AmericanStudy that
\nmoment and a handful of contexts.]<\/p>\n

On more overt and more subtle reasons why the teacher-turned-astronaut
\nwas a perfect choice for the Teacher
\nin Space Project<\/a> (and an especially tragic loss).<\/span><\/p>\n

At least according to her mother Grace George Corrigan\u2019s Foreword
\nto Colin Burgess\u2019s cultural biography Teacher
\nin Space: Christa McAuliffe and the Challenger<\/span>
\nLegacy<\/a> <\/i>(2000), the day after John Glenn\u2019s historic September
\n1962 space flight<\/a> a 13-year-old Christa McAuliffe told a high school friend,
\n\u201cDo you realize that someday people will be going to the moon? Maybe even taking
\na bus, and I want to do that!\u201d Nearly a quarter-century later, when she was
\napplying for President Ronald Reagan\u2019s Teacher in Space Project in early 1985,
\nMcAuliffe returned to that foundational moment for both herself and the space
\nprogram, writing
\non her application<\/a>, \u201cI watched the Space Age being born, and I would like
\nto participate.\u201d NASA official Alan
\nLadwig would later note<\/a> that McAuliffe was chosen from among the ten
\nfinalists for the project due to her \u201cinfectious enthusiasm,\u201d and it seems
\nclear that that enthusiasm was both specific to the history of the space
\nprogram and thus a genuine part of McAuliffe\u2019s perspective for many decades by
\nthat mid-80s moment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Obviously that throughline makes for a compelling and ultimately tragic
\nside to the story of McAuliffe\u2019s selection for this unique role on a doomed
\nmission. But I would argue that other details about her work as a history and
\nsocial studies teacher together comprise an even more powerfully symbolic
\nreflection of what she brought to the Challenger<\/i>. For one thing, she got
\nher
\nMaster\u2019s in Education<\/a> from Maryland\u2019s Bowie State University, an HBCU;
\nthere were geographic reasons for the choice (she and her husband lived in
\nMaryland at the time), but I have to think the experience affected her future
\nwork as an educator in a variety of inclusive ways. For another thing, during
\nher subsequent time at Concord High School in New Hampshire (where she was
\nworking when selected for the project) she created a new course entitled \u201cThe
\nAmerican Woman<\/a>,\u201d which \u201cexplored the history of the United States from the
\nfemale perspective.\u201d And for a third thing, according to a
\nNew York Times<\/i> profile<\/a> in her teaching she \u201cemphasized the impact of
\nordinary people on history, saying they were as important to the historical
\nrecord as kings, politicians or generals.\u201d I can\u2019t imagine a more pitch-perfect
\ncombination for this first teacher-astronaut. <\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s one more detail about McAuliffe\u2019s biography that I haven\u2019t
\nseen highlighted in as many stories, and that while small adds another
\ncompelling layer to her symbolic identity. McAuliffe\u2019s great-uncle was Philip
\nKhuri Hitti<\/a>, the Lebanese-American historian and educator who became one of
\nthe most influential figures in
\nthat community<\/a> as well as in the development of the discipline of Arabic
\nStudies<\/a>. I can\u2019t find any clear info about whether the two knew each other or
\nnot, but I still love the throughline between that groundbreaking educator and
\nthe inspiring teacher his great-niece would become. In one of her interviews about
\nthe Teacher in Space Project, McAuliffe
\nexclaimed<\/a>, \u201cImagine me teaching from space, all over the world, touching so
\nmany people’s lives. That’s a teacher’s dream! I have a vision of the world as
\na global village, a world without boundaries. Imagine a history teacher making
\nhistory!” Long before her tragic death (although only amplified by it, if
\nin painfully ironic ways), McAuliffe had already done that, extending the
\nlegacy of her historic relative and making her a truly perfect choice for this
\nsymbolically American role. <\/span><\/p>\n
