I know how that reads. In this industry, in the current environment, \u201cbrewery closes taproom\u201d usually means one thing, and it\u2019s not a happy thing. So let\u2019s set the record straight: Seattle\u2019s Snapshot Brewing<\/strong><\/a> isn\u2019t going anywhere. Instead, they\u2019re about to get a lot bigger. The Greenwood neighborhood will miss them, but we should wish them well as they spread their wings.<\/p>\n

Growing Up, and Saying Goodbye, Isn\u2019t Always Easy<\/h2>\n

The Greenwood taproom that\u2019s been Snapshot\u2019s home since 2018 will pour its last pint on Saturday, August 15th. But the reason behind it isn\u2019t the reason you\u2019re bracing for. Snapshot just finished building a new production facility in the Shoreline community that lets them brew nearly ten times what they were producing before \u2014 and that kind of capacity means a fundamental shift in what the business actually is. Less taproom, more wholesale. Less \u201ccome sit at our bar,\u201d more \u201cfind us at your favorite bar instead.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important to remember that while we\u2019re closing a taproom, this is really a growth story,\u201d said owner Taylor McAtee. \u201cOur new production brewery allows us to produce nearly ten times as much beer as before, putting us in a position to serve many more wholesale accounts throughout the Seattle area. We believe a production-focused craft brewery can succeed here without relying on a taproom to support its wholesale business.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not something you hear a lot these days, right? For the last several years, the standard survival model in craft beer has been the opposite: lean into the taproom side of the business, let it prop up everything else, treat wholesale as the nice-to-have cherry on top. Snapshot is flipping that script entirely, betting that a production-focused brewery can grow solely on distribution, without a storefront subsidizing the whole operation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Yet, McAtee isn\u2019t slamming the door on taprooms for good, either. This isn\u2019t a retreat. It\u2019s a strategic realignment, with the door left open for a Snapshop taproom version 2.0.. \u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean we\u2019re done with taprooms. We\u2019d love to pour pints again when the right opportunity comes along.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Greenwood Gave Snapshot Its Start<\/h3>\n

None of this happens without Greenwood, and Snapshot knows it. The taproom is where the brewery\u2019s whole camera-themed identity took root, and the neighborhood is where Snapshot found the community that carried it through the hardest stretch any of these businesses have faced \u2014 the brewery specifically credits Greenwood\u2019s support during the COVID years with helping shape who they became. That\u2019s not a small thing to say out loud. A lot of breweries didn\u2019t have a neighborhood that showed up for them like that.<\/p>\n

The brewery also took a moment to thank the people who actually built the place day to day \u2014 bartenders, brewers, the musicians who played there, the trivia hosts who ran the mic, and everyone who represented Snapshot over the years. And, of course, the thousands of customers who made a Greenwood taproom into something closer to a second living room.<\/p>\n

One Last Weekend<\/h3>\n

Snapshot will be closed this coming weekend while the team wraps up final touches on the new production facility, then reopens the Greenwood taproom one more time \u2014 Thursday, August 13th through Saturday, August 15th \u2014 for a proper send-off. If you\u2019ve got a stool with your name basically worn into it at that bar, this is the weekend to go sit in it. Raise a pint, swap a few stories, and help close out a chapter the right way.<\/p>\n

Bigger Is The Bigger Point<\/h3>\n

Craft beer is going through a genuinely rough patch right now \u2014 breweries closing, volumes down, margins tighter than they\u2019ve been in years. Against that backdrop, a small, independent brewery finishing a new production facility, multiplying its output tenfold, and doubling down on growth is worth paying attention to. Snapshot isn\u2019t shrinking to survive. They\u2019re restructuring to expand.<\/p>\n

Go say goodbye to Greenwood this weekend. Then keep an eye out for Snapshot beer showing up at a lot more bars around Seattle very soon \u2014 because that\u2019s the whole point.<\/p>\n
