Learning how to disciple a new Christian<\/strong> changed my entire ministry. It stretched my faith, sharpened my prayers, and reminded me why I serve.<\/p>\n

As a pastor\u2019s wife, your plate is already overflowing. You are quietly pouring into everyone else. But discipleship? That is the only work that multiplies and outlasts you.<\/p>\n

Here are five distinct, personally proven ways to disciple new believers<\/strong> without burning out.<\/p>\n

\"How<\/p>\n

1. Start With a Simple, Honest Conversation About Their New Life<\/span><\/h2>\n

Before you pull out any material, just listen<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Knowing how to disciple a new Christian starts with understanding where they actually are. New believers are often confused, excited, scared, and overwhelmed, sometimes all at once. They don\u2019t need a lecture. What they need is someone to sit across from them and say, \u201cTell me about your life since you said yes to Jesus.<\/strong>\u201c<\/p>\n

Ask them:<\/p>\n

  • What has changed since you became a Christian?<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • What are you most confused about?<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • What does your prayer life look like right now?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    That conversation alone gives you a roadmap. You\u2019ll know what they believe, what they struggle with, and what gaps need to be filled. As a pastor\u2019s wife, you\u2019re positioned to have this conversation with real authority and compassion.<\/p>\n

    Here\u2019s how I break it down in simple terms:<\/p>\n

    1. The Word<\/strong> \u2014 They must learn to read and study Scripture on their own. Start with one chapter a day. Help them understand what they\u2019re reading<\/strong>. Show them how to ask: What does this say? What does it mean? How do I apply it?<\/p>\n

    2. Prayer<\/strong> \u2014 Prayer is how they talk to God. Teach them it doesn\u2019t need to be fancy. Show them how to pray honestly<\/strong>. Pray with<\/em> them out loud so they can hear what real conversation with God sounds like.<\/p>\n

    3. Fellowship<\/strong> \u2014 They need Christian community. Isolation is dangerous for new believers. Help them plug into a small group<\/strong>, a Bible study, or a women\u2019s ministry where they can grow alongside others.<\/p>\n

    4. Obedience<\/strong> \u2014 Real discipleship produces changed behavior. Help them understand that following Jesus means following His commands<\/strong>,\u00a0not to earn salvation, but because they love Him.<\/p>\n

    When you know how to disciple a new Christian, you make sure these four pillars get covered early. You don\u2019t have to tackle them all at once. But don\u2019t skip any of them either.<\/p>\n

    Here\u2019s a simple structure I use for one-on-one discipleship meetings:<\/p>\n

    • Check-in (5 minutes):<\/strong> How\u2019s your week been? How\u2019s your heart?<\/li>\n
    • Scripture (15 minutes):<\/strong> Read a passage together. Ask what stood out to her.<\/li>\n
    • Application (5 minutes):<\/strong> What is God asking her to do this week?<\/li>\n
    • Prayer (5 minutes):<\/strong> Pray together before you leave.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      That\u2019s thirty minutes. That\u2019s it.<\/p>\n

      You don\u2019t need a seminary degree to disciple a new Christian well. You need to show up and be present<\/strong>. As a ministry wife, you understand what it means to serve behind the scenes. This is that kind of quiet, faithful work, and it produces fruit that lasts.<\/p>\n

      One-on-one time also creates safety<\/strong>. She\u2019ll say things in private that she won\u2019t say in a group. That\u2019s where the real growth happens.<\/p>\n

      4. Use a Written Discipleship Teaching Outline Together<\/span><\/h2>\n

      Structure matters, especially for new believers.<\/p>\n

      When I first started learning how to disciple a new Christian, I tried to do it all from memory. That was a mistake. A written discipleship teaching outline keeps both of you on track<\/strong>. It removes guesswork, and it ensures you cover what actually matters.<\/p>\n

      You can build your own or find free discipleship training materials in PDF format online. Either way, here\u2019s what a solid teaching outline should include:<\/p>\n

      Week 1:<\/strong> Salvation \u2014 What just happened to me?<\/p>\n

      Week 2:<\/strong> Assurance \u2014 How do I know I\u2019m saved?<\/p>\n

      Week 3:<\/strong> The Bible \u2014 How do I read and study it?<\/p>\n

      Week 5:<\/strong> The Church \u2014 Why do I need other Christians?<\/p>\n

      Week 7:<\/strong> Temptation \u2014 What do I do when I struggle?<\/p>\n

      Week 8:<\/strong> Sharing Your Faith \u2014 How do I tell others about Jesus?<\/p>\n

      This eight-week outline works beautifully for new believer discipleship. It is clear. It\u2019s progressive. And it gives the person you\u2019re discipling a sense of how far they\u2019ve com<\/strong>e.<\/p>\n

      As a pastor\u2019s wife, you may even be able to create these materials for your church and use them with multiple women over time. That\u2019s kingdom multiplication right there.<\/p>\n

      \"How<\/p>\n

      5. Model the Life You\u2019re Teaching Her to Live<\/span><\/h2>\n

      This is the one most people forget.<\/p>\n

      The most powerful part of knowing how to disciple a new Christian isn\u2019t the curriculum. It\u2019s you<\/em>. Your life is the curriculum<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      Let her see you read your Bible. Invite her to watch how you handle conflict with grace. Let her see that you\u2019re not perfect<\/strong>, and that you still trust God anyway. Show her what a woman of faith looks like on a Tuesday when everything feels hard.<\/p>\n

      This is where ministry wives have a unique advantage. You live in the fishbowl. People are watching you whether you like it or not. Lean into that intentionally<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      Invite her to serve with you at a church event. Let her sit with you on a Sunday morning. Let her call you when she\u2019s struggling, and actually pick up the phone. Be the kind of woman who points every conversation back to Jesus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      Paul said it plainly: \u201cFollow me as I follow Christ<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em> That\u2019s discipleship in one sentence. You don\u2019t have to be perfect. You just have to be faithful.<\/p>\n

      When she watches you model what it means to follow Jesus in real life, she learns things no printed material can teach her.<\/p>\n

      Here\u2019s what I want you to remember:<\/p>\n

      You don\u2019t need to be a Bible scholar. Nor do you need a perfect plan. You don\u2019t even need free discipleship training materials in PDF form, though those can help. You just need to show up<\/em> and say, \u201cI\u2019ll walk with you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Knowing how to disciple a new Christian is a gift, and as a pastor\u2019s wife or ministry wife, you are uniquely positioned to give it. You\u2019ve seen what faithful living looks like through the highs and lows of ministry.<\/p>\n

      You know what it means to trust God when things don\u2019t make sense<\/strong>. That testimony? That\u2019s gold.<\/p>\n

      Start with one woman. Meet weekly. Keep it simple. Stay consistent. Watch God work.<\/p>\n

      Discipleship is not a program. It\u2019s a relationship<\/strong>. And the best time to start is right now.<\/p>\n
