{"id":7031816,"date":"2026-08-07T10:47:34","date_gmt":"2026-08-07T10:47:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/uncategorized\/progressive-christian-reflections-by-chris-glaser-literalism-vs-spirituality\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T10:47:34","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T10:47:34","slug":"progressive-christian-reflections-by-chris-glaser-literalism-vs-spirituality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=7031816","title":{"rendered":"Progressive Christian Reflections by Chris Glaser: Literalism vs Spirituality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><b><i><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Happy<br \/>\n90<sup>th<\/sup> birthday today to progressive Christian author Bishop John (Jack) Spong,<br \/>\nwho has helped Christians better understand our faith with the help and support of Christine<br \/>\nSpong.<\/span><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><i><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The<br \/>\nfollowing post appeared on July 16, 2014.<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The<br \/>\ntrend of people identifying as \u201cspiritual but not religious\u201d is sometimes a<br \/>\nrejection of biblical literalism, religious fundamentalism and official orthodoxy.<br \/>\nTo me that can be a good thing, and, in my reading of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Cloud-Unknowing-Paraclete-Essentials\/dp\/1557256691\" target=\"_blank\">a recent translation<\/a> from<br \/>\nMiddle English by Bernard Bangley of the book, <i>The Cloud of Unknowing<\/i>, very traditional.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The<br \/>\nanonymous author encourages readers to discard what\u2019s not helpful in the book,<br \/>\nand so I freely disagree with the writer\u2019s rejection of physical and sensual<br \/>\nexperience as unspiritual, even ungodly. \u00a0This 14<sup>th<\/sup> century English monk must<br \/>\nnot have met the 14<sup>th<\/sup> century English nun, Julian of Norwich, who<br \/>\nwrote, \u201cIn our sensuality, God is\u2026\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The<br \/>\nbeliefs of the church regarding creation, incarnation, and resurrection all<br \/>\nsupport a hallowing of bodily experience. As James B. Nelson and a diverse<br \/>\ngroup of other contemporary Christian body theologians have affirmed, we know<br \/>\nGod through our bodies or we don\u2019t know God at all. Nelson goes so far as to<br \/>\nadd, \u201cPleasure is the strongest argument for the existence of God.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Yet<br \/>\nI wholeheartedly embrace <i>The Cloud<\/i><br \/>\nauthor\u2019s understanding that literalism interferes with our spirituality, and he<br \/>\noffers many examples. I once wrote that we do a disservice to religion when we<br \/>\ntreat matters of faith as matters of fact.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">For<br \/>\nexample, the writer cautions against taking the ascension of Jesus literally.<br \/>\nAs a college professor of mine once said, \u201cIf Jesus had ascended at the speed<br \/>\nof light, he still would not be out of the known universe.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><i><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The Cloud of Unknowing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\"> asserts that \u201cthe spatial<br \/>\nreferences are only symbolic. \u2026 The spiritual realm is always near, enveloping<br \/>\nus on every side. Whoever has a strong desire to be in heaven is already in<br \/>\nheaven, spiritually. Measure the highway to heaven in terms of desire rather<br \/>\nthan miles. \u2026 Love determines a soul\u2019s location.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Earlier<br \/>\nthe writer explained, \u201cSimilar in nature to heavenly bliss, divine<br \/>\ncontemplation already participates in eternity.\u201d I once wrote that people we<br \/>\nrecognize as living saints are those who experience God\u2019s commonwealth here and<br \/>\nnow. Spiritually they have found heaven in their desire to love and serve<br \/>\nothers. Heaven for me is where God\u2019s will and human will coincide. Saying the<br \/>\nLord\u2019s Prayer (\u201con earth as it is in heaven\u201d) is a way of aligning ourselves with that greater purpose. That\u2019s why Jesus could say, \u201cRepent, for the kingdom of<br \/>\nheaven is at hand\u201d or \u201camong us.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">There<br \/>\nare many pearls of wisdom about the spiritual life in <i>The Cloud of Unknowing<\/i>. Here are a few quotes I underlined in my<br \/>\ncopy:<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">+<br \/>\nRemember your spiritual needs rather than your spiritual achievements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">+<br \/>\nContinue until your prayer life becomes enjoyable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">+<br \/>\nYou only need a tiny scrap of time to move toward God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">+<br \/>\nLoving contemplation destroys our tendency to sin more effectively than any<br \/>\nother practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">+<br \/>\nThe essence of contemplation is a simple and direct reaching out to God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">+<br \/>\nJudging others, pronouncing them good or bad, is God\u2019s business. We may evaluate<br \/>\nbehavior, but not the person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">+<br \/>\nChrist taught us in Matthew\u2019s Gospel that spoken prayers are best when they are<br \/>\nnot too long.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">+<br \/>\nA little prayer of one syllable pierces heaven because we concentrate our<br \/>\nentire spiritual energy into it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">+<br \/>\nThe person in great distress will continue calling for help until someone hears<br \/>\nand responds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">+<br \/>\nThe little word \u201cGod\u201d can flood your spirit with spiritual meaning without<br \/>\ngiving attention to particular activities of God. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">+<br \/>\nI desire to help you tighten the spiritual knot of warm love that is between<br \/>\nyou and God, to lead you to spiritual unity with God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">+<br \/>\nLove functions as your guide in this world, and it will bring you to grace in<br \/>\nthe next.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">+<br \/>\n[After meeting our physical needs,] sensuality urges us to take more than we<br \/>\nneed, encouraging lust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">+<br \/>\nThe important consideration is not what you are, or what you have been, but<br \/>\nwhat you want to be.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Finally,<br \/>\nthis anonymous monk seems to echo the axiom that spiritual guides remind us of what<br \/>\nwe already know:<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin-left: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Writers used to think that humility required them<br \/>\nto say nothing out of their own heads, but to corroborate every idea with<br \/>\nquotations from Scripture or the [Church] fathers [and mothers]. Today this<br \/>\npractice demonstrates nothing but cleverness and education. \u2026 If God moves you<br \/>\nto believe what I say, then accept my ideas on their own merits. (p 99-100)<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Given<br \/>\nits encouragement to surrender certain knowledge of God for intimacy with God, I<br \/>\ncan\u2019t help but think <i>The Cloud of<br \/>\nUnknowing<\/i> would be a great text for the \u201cspiritual but not religious\u201d<br \/>\ncrowd. As they say in recovery programs, religion is for people afraid of going<br \/>\nto hell; spirituality is for people who have already been there.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"border: 1pt solid windowtext; mso-border-alt: solid windowtext .5pt; mso-element: para-border-div; padding: 1pt 4pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"border: none; mso-border-alt: solid windowtext .5pt; mso-padding-alt: 1.0pt 4.0pt 1.0pt 4.0pt; padding: 0in;\"><b><i><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Georgia&quot;,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">My dear friend and<br \/>\nlongtime supporter of this blog, the Rev.
