Shelton successfully avoided vehicles, road signs and injuries.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 2560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/travelradar.aero\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-06-at-3.31.48-PM-scaled.png\" alt=\"A witness' dash camera footage captured the Piper PA-28 as it descended.\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1182\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A witness\u2019 dash camera footage captured the aircraft as it descended \u00a9 Eric Jordan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>What happened?<\/h2>\n<p>According to Floridian outlet WEAR, Shelton was flying an aircraft with a <a href=\"https:\/\/travelradar.aero\/student-pilot-lands-aircraft-after-instructor-dies-mid-flight\/\">student<\/a> on his first-ever lesson.<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft, a Piper PA-28, belongs to the Pensacola Air Flight School and has been used for training since 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Around 10:30 a.m. local time, Shelton, a <a href=\"https:\/\/travelradar.aero\/pilot-caught-skywriting-im-bored-on-airline-tracker\/\">flight instructor<\/a>, reported smelling burning oil in the cockpit.<\/p>\n<p>She told air traffic controllers in an audio recording obtained by\u00a0LiveATC.net:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cOur oil pressure is dropping down into the red and we do have fumes in the cockpit from the oil. I don\u2019t know if we\u2019re going to make the airport\u2026 We are not making the airport, we\u2019re going down on I-10.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Photos from the incident showed the aircraft landed on the right edge of the highway, with other vehicles parked nearby and unharmed. Simmons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Statements from the scene<\/h2>\n<p>Eric Jordan, a truck driver who was on the highway when the plane made its emergency landing, told WSVN that he was lucky to have seen the plane\u2019s shadow as it descended and was able to slow his truck to avoid it.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan said that Shelton \u201ckept it in control\u201d despite the \u201cclose call\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He further added that it was a \u201cmiracle\u201d that she \u201clanded the thing with no problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shelton, who has over 1,300 hours of total flight time, told WEAR that, during the <a href=\"https:\/\/travelradar.aero\/polish-pilots-incapacitation-forces-plane-into-emergency-landing\/\">emergency landing<\/a>, she was focused on assuring the student that they would find a safe spot to land:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI feel my training has prepared me exceptionally well for this moment.
