SAN ANTONIO\u2014As\u00a0SeaWorld\u00a0San Antonio receives\u00a0another seven beluga whales<\/a>\u00a0from Canada\u2019s Marineland this week, bringing the park\u2019s total to nine of the 30 whales who could be moved to U.S. aquariums, Canada\u2019s leading national animal law organization, Animal Justice,\u00a0is\u00a0calling\u00a0on\u00a0SeaWorld\u00a0to make a clear, public commitment that none of these whales will ever be bred.<\/p>\n

The heartbreaking plight of these whales, who were either snatched from the wild or irresponsibly bred and exploited at Marineland, helped inspire Canadian lawmakers to\u00a0pass groundbreaking legislation<\/a>\u00a0in 2019 banning whale and dolphin captivity, also critically\u00a0outlawing their use in entertainment and breeding.<\/p>\n

Marineland had years to plan for these whales\u2019 future and failed to do so, leaving them to languish in tanks where 19 beluga whales, one orca, and a dolphin have died since 2019. A seaside sanctuary, like the one\u00a0being built in Nova Scotia<\/a>, could have offered these whales a real retirement with proper support and funding.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When the federal government blocked a proposed transfer to China\u2019s Chimelong Ocean Kingdom last year,\u00a0Marineland\u00a0threatened to kill<\/a>\u00a0all 30 remaining beluga whales.\u00a0The unfortunate reality is that due to inaction, and in light of Marineland\u2019s threats, the whales\u2019 relocation to U.S. aquariums is likely the best outcome currently available.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, it appears the Canadian government export permits allowing the transfer of Marineland\u2019s belugas to\u00a0SeaWorld\u00a0and other U.S. aquariums\u00a0were issued without no-breeding conditions, which flies in the face of the government\u2019s own\u00a0export policy.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cSeaWorld\u00a0can prove this is purely a rescue, not also a backdoor way to replenish its breeding stock, by ruling out breeding these animals right now,\u00a0much like it did for orcas in 2016<\/a>,\u201d said Alexandra Pester, senior staff lawyer at Animal Justice.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese whales have already endured a lifetime of confinement and exploitation. They should not be used to produce another generation of captive whales destined to spend their lives in tanks instead of the ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n

Animal Justice is urging\u00a0SeaWorld\u00a0San Antonio and any other facility receiving Marineland\u2019s belugas to\u00a0publicly pledge that the whales will not be used in any breeding program.\u00a0In the wild, belugas can live for decades, travel thousands of miles, and form deep social bonds, the kind of life no tank can replicate.<\/p>\n

\u201cCanada passed a law in 2019 meant to ensure these whales would be\u00a0the last generation of belugas to endure captivity. We owe it to these whales to make sure that promise doesn\u2019t end at the border,\u201d said Ms. Pester.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd if\u00a0SeaWorld\u00a0declines to do the right thing, it may be up to people of Texas to urge their state lawmakers to follow in Canada\u2019s footsteps and change the law to ensure these whales get the protections they deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n
