Ever since then, flight simulators, especially World War II themed, have been top of my list, and I\u2019ve damn near played them all. <a href=\"https:\/\/gaijinent.com\/game\/aces-of-thunder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aces of Thunder<\/a> comes from Gaijin Entertainment, the makers of the\u00a0very successful\u00a0War Thunder series, which <a href=\"https:\/\/gamingyeeter.com\/author\/patrickestrada\/\">I wrote a review<\/a> on a few years back.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0With Aces of Thunder, Gaijin are going for all meat, no potatoes.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0all about an Immersive VR experience that can be played on the PS5-VR2. Something\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0been difficult to get done, apparently, because\u00a0Aces of Thunder was due back in Q4 of 2024. Was the wait worth it?\u00a0Hell\u00a0yeah\u00a0it\u00a0was!!!<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gamingyeeter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Cockpit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gamingyeeter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Cockpit-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Players can choose from\u00a0all of\u00a0the countries that took place in the battles in the skies of World War II: Germany, Russia, France, UK, America with over 20 different planes to\u00a0chose\u00a0from and 15 themed maps to play on. Battles like\u00a0Iwo Jima, Saipan, and Berlin. There is also the\u00a0option\u00a0to choose from World War I era planes. Flying those paper\u00a0air-planes\u00a0with engines is a whole other matter of interesting physics and skill.<\/p>\n<h4 lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">What places are available to play by country in Aces of Thunder?<\/h4>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">America<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">UK<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Russia<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Germany<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Japan<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Good thing that Aces of Thunder has a \u201ctest flight\u201d\u00a0option\u00a0so players can get used to the controls of the game. One thing that players are going to notice right away is that there are no tutorials or flight instructions and how to play this game. It is a flight simulation game,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0not exact simulation, but it does\u00a0take into account\u00a0a lot of aerodynamic physics and can be very unforgiving.<\/p>\n<h3 lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">What are the controller options in Aces of Thunder?<\/h3>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">There are a few options for\u00a0controls. I highly recommend spending a lot of time in the test flight mode getting used to the controls because\u00a0even\u00a0I as an experienced flight simulation player, I crashed a lot and got\u00a0pretty frustrated\u00a0at first.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Flying with the dual sense controllers is possible, as well as the handheld controllers, however, I found flying with these two methods to be extremely challenging and difficult. The way I prefer to play, and highly recommend playing, is with a HOTAS game flight stick. Of course this is going to set you back $75-125, I personally use the\u00a0Thrustmaster\u00a04 and it makes a world of difference in gameplay. I spent about two hours learning how to fly my planes without\u00a0crashing\u00a0but I still have the occasional spin out and\u00a0nose dive\u00a0into the ground. Like I said,\u00a0very\u00a0unforgiving.<\/p>\n<h3 lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">How are the Graphics and Realism in Aces of Thunder?<\/h3>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gamingyeeter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/wing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gamingyeeter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/wing-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Although players can play\u00a0on\u00a0a flatscreen environment, the game was designed for virtual reality and\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0how\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0been playing it, so\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0how\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0going to review it.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Aces of Thunder\u00a0is\u00a0amazing!\u00a0I often forget that\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0even playing a virtual reality game when\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0dog-fighting\u00a0over the Pacific. The cockpit is full of instruments and dials that measure and move as the plane\u00a0makes adjustments\u00a0like a it would in the real world, oil-pressure, ammo, landing gear, etc. The RPMs, oil pressure, heat, all have bearing on how well the\u00a0aircraft\u00a0will fly.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0possible to blow out the engine if the player is pushing the engine too hard. Some planes are more sensitive to this than others, so some individual research into the\u00a0players\u00a0plane of choice would really help\u00a0benefit\u00a0overall gameplay. If the airplane the player likes is a dive bomber,\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0no point in trying to get into a plane the plane dog fight with\u00a0an aircraft\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0more suited for that style of fighting. Learning the limits and advantages of the plane really\u00a0make\u00a0a difference\u00a0in the amount of\u00a0time you can spend flying.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">The game\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0perfect, there is some antialiasing in the game menu, and sometimes land vehicles can disappear underneath the terrain, making it look like the ground is shooting at you. The most of these things are forgivable and\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0take away much from the overall experience.<\/p>\n<h3 lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">What\u2019s\u00a0the Gameplay like in Aces of Thunder?<\/h3>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">There are several ways to enjoy this game either single player or online with up to 32 players on a map.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">In\u00a0single\u00a0player campaign\u00a0called \u201cWar Stories\u201d,\u00a0players fly in increasingly harder missions that have set\u00a0objectives\u00a0that will\u00a0determine\u00a0the winner. Players need to take note that this is a\u00a0team\u00a0overall effort, sometimes just surviving and causing a little bit of damage is all that needs to be done to complete the mission.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Players can see the mission status as well as the time\u00a0remaining\u00a0in the game and score via a game map that sits in the cockpit. Players can grab and move this map around the cockpit for better ease of use, but it is always a permanent map. This map also shows the damage that the plane has taken as well as any damaged components, like landing gear, wings, engines, or flaps.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Players can play through a range of different missions online with other players, including\u00a0mission-based\u00a0team death match, or air domination matches.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">There is a custom mission editor where Players can set these games for as short as 10 minutes and as long as six hours, as well as changing the time of day and weather, amount of spawn, and limits on ammo and fuel.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">When players run out of ammo, take too much damage, or are low on fuel, they can land their plane at a friendly base and after 15 seconds will respawn in a fresh plane. Doing this does not count as a death in game. However, this is easier said\u00a0then\u00a0done and will take some practice perfecting especially if the plane is heavily damaged.\u00a0A crash landing is still a landing as long as the plane doesn\u2019t explode.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gamingyeeter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/engine.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gamingyeeter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/engine-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Leaderboards track players kills on both airplanes, land vehicles, and ships as well as total playtime and\u00a0duel\u00a0win percentage, but only if players join the \u201cbattle now\u201d\u00a0option\u00a0on the main menu screen. This is currently the only game mode that counts towards Leaderboard progress as well as weapon and skin\u00a0unlocks.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Players can unlock different camouflage and decal skins to customize their planes. These can be complete re-works of the overall paint\u00a0job\u00a0or they can be\u00a0nose\u00a0decals like shark mouth or the pinup girl to help give players a little bit of individuality.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Customizing a plane can help better\u00a0identify\u00a0allies from enemies. This is important because friendly fire is\u00a0on\u00a0and there are no indicators of who is friendly or enemy\u00a0aircraft\u00a0at a distance. As players get closer to the planes, if they are an ally, their name will show up next to\u00a0a blue diamond\u00a0icon. This is by game design and can lead to players accidentally shooting down their own planes. Some planes have very distinctive silhouettes, and as players get more experience,\u00a0identifying\u00a0planes can become easier. Enemy artillery and ground units can be seen on the mini map as well as a small red dot on the map is an indicator of an enemy\u00a0aircraft, but only when the\u00a0aircraft\u00a0is in the\u00a0players\u00a0immediate vicinity.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">I highly recommend players look into online tutorial videos of how to dog fight.\u00a0The planes use realistic dynamics and\u00a0does\u00a0not follow conventional video game standards of being able to do whatever a player wants, whenever they want to do it.\u00a0All the\u00a0planes have limitations and advantages. Some planes only carry 200 rounds of ammunition while others carry 3000 rounds. Players should keep this in mind when they are playing based on their playing style.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Players can\u00a0purchase\u00a0additional\u00a0airplanes by upgrading to the DELUXE version of Aces of Thunder for an\u00a0additional\u00a0$29.99 or\u00a0purchasing\u00a0them individually for $4.99. The base game is also $29.99\u00a0making the entire game in line, cost wise with most games today.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: windowtext;\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">If gamers are into real World War II combat with immersive gameplay, realistic controls, and high replay ability\u00a0then I highly recommend Aces of Thunder for the PS VR2 system.
