{"id":7030825,"date":"2026-08-06T21:16:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-06T21:16:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/uncategorized\/climbers-mourn-death-of-first-omani-woman-to-summit-mount-everest\/"},"modified":"2026-08-06T21:16:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-06T21:16:09","slug":"climbers-mourn-death-of-first-omani-woman-to-summit-mount-everest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=7030825","title":{"rendered":"Climbers mourn death of first Omani woman to summit Mount Everest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"--floated-w:max(400px, ((100cqw - 740px - (var(--body-gutter) * 2)) \/ 2) + (var(--body-gutter) * 2));--floated-max-h:60vh\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mountaineering community is mourning after a deadly accident in Pakistan\u2019s Karakoram Mountains on July 30, 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten climbers died in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/famed-climber-nirmal-purja-nine-others-die-avalanche-pakistan-hiking-company-2026-08-01\/\">avalanche on Broad Peak<\/a>, the 12th-tallest mountain in the world. The dead include giants in the mountaineering community. Among them was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimsdai.com\/project-possible?\">Nirmal Purja<\/a>, a Nepali climber who broke records scaling the world\u2019s 14 tallest peaks in six months. Also killed was<a href=\"https:\/\/nadhira-alharthy.com\/everest?\"> Nadhira Al Harthy<\/a>, a pioneering mountaineer from Oman. She was the first woman from her country to summit Mount Everest in 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nadhira Al Harthy was part of a wave that has inspired a growing number of Arab women to pursue mountaineering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/manalrostom.com\/\">Manal Rostom<\/a> is one of them.\u00a0 In 2022, she became the first Egyptian woman to make it to the top of Everest. While she never met Nadhira Al Harthy in person, they frequently communicated online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The World spoke with Rostom about Nadhira Al Harthy and the climbers caught in that avalanche.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rostom mentioned that \u201cmountaineering is a very white, male-dominated sport. So, normally, it\u2019s not a very common thing to see a hijab-wearing athlete or hijab-wearing mountaineer. So, me and her had that much in common, and we\u2019d always talk about trying to empower women who looked like us or women who wanted to choose to wear the hijab and still be athletes. So, I think this is one thing that brought us together online because I\u2019m also very vocal about that part of my journey as a covered athlete.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure data-slot=\"figure-root\" back in 2021, and she said that when she started training to try to climb Mount Everest, she did not tell anyone because she didn\u2019t think her family, or society in general, would accept a woman mountaineer. In one clip, Nadhira said: \u201cSometimes, people, they kill your dreams if you will start talking about [them]<strong>. I didn\u2019t want to listen [to], <\/strong>\u2018Y<strong>es you can or you cannot.\u2019 I don\u2019t want to evaluate my dream.\u201d Do you think that attitudes about women climbers in Arab countries have changed in the intervening years?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Manal Rostom: It\u2019s changing. I wouldn\u2019t say it has changed, but it\u2019s definitely changing. There\u2019s literally a first woman who\u2019s climbed Everest from pretty much every Arab country right now. You\u2019ve got Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar. We still get hate online, of course, like ridiculous comments. But I think this happens in every culture. I wouldn\u2019t just limit it to the Arab world. So, I think it\u2019s definitely changing, but there\u2019s still so much more work that we could be doing, and that should be done.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-slot=\"qa-root\" class=\"group\/qa relative ps-7 -ms-7 my-8 before:absolute before:inset-0 before:left-2 before:right-auto before:w-1 before:bg-linear-(--gradient-body-divider-bg) before:bg-fixed before:rounded-full\">\n<p><strong>You summited Everest three years after she did. I understand you were supposed to be on her expedition. How did she end up influencing your climbing career?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She was just a great support. I remember every time I would post a video, saying, \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019m going make it. This is really hard, and no one ever told me that I can\u2019t breathe and I\u2019m always nauseous.\u201d And she would always, not only send me a short text, but she would send me a long voice note. She had no doubt. And I remember right before my summit push, she sent me a long voice note saying, \u201cOxygen is going to change your pace. Oxygen is going to change your performance on the mountain. You\u2019re going to fly, and I\u2019m sure that your next post is going to be of you and your Egyptian flag.\u201d It really gave me a lot of push while I was on the mountain, actually. And she was just really kind. One of these people with no ego, super humble, achieving all those firsts for her country, very passionate about her culture, very passionate about her country. And she just really wanted to inspire the younger girls. So yeah, it\u2019s a really tough day for everybody, especially the ones who are really passionate about the sport. Because what is the sport, right? Why are we so crazy about this sport? It takes lives. So, I don\u2019t know, it\u2019s just devastating for the mountaineering community.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-slot=\"qa-root\" class=\"group\/qa relative ps-7 -ms-7 my-8 before:absolute before:inset-0 before:left-2 before:right-auto before:w-1 before:bg-linear-(--gradient-body-divider-bg) before:bg-fixed before:rounded-full\">\n<p><strong>We don\u2019t know all the details of what happened on the mountain, but her death and those of her climbing partners do just underline the fact that mountaineering is extremely dangerous. Does her death make you think any differently about your future in climbing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div data-slot=\"qa-answer\" class=\"leading-snug text-pretty mt-3\">To be completely honest, I just looked at my parents today and I was like, \u201cI don\u2019t think I want to do this.\u201d I never had the 14 peaks as a challenge. I wasn\u2019t interested. I was just hopeful about completing the <a href=\"https:\/\/climbingthesevensummits.com\/climb-the-seven-summits\/\">Seven Summits<\/a>. Currently, I\u2019ve only done six out of the seven.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<figure data-slot=\"figure-root\" data-align=\"default\" Correct. I still only have Denali left, which actually wasn\u2019t successful last June. I was turned around 600 meters away from the summit, and I came down thinking, I don\u2019t think I\u2019m enjoying this anymore. And then, now, with Nadhira\u2019s death, is it actually worth it? I don\u2019t know. But it\u2019s definitely very, very demotivating, and it\u2019s just really depressing. I don\u2019t want to make any announcements or anything today, but it\u2019s just very crushing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-slot=\"qa-root\" class=\"group\/qa relative ps-7 -ms-7 my-8 before:absolute before:inset-0 before:left-2 before:right-auto before:w-1 before:bg-linear-(--gradient-body-divider-bg) before:bg-fixed before:rounded-full\">\n<p><strong>But you\u2019re thinking about hanging up the boots, I guess.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A hundred percent. It\u2019s crossing my mind, yes. It\u2019s just a touch selfish that when we go off on these mountains, we tend to forget how all of our families and close friends and family are just worried sick about us. I saw it in my mom\u2019s eyes, and she was like, \u201cPlease stop. Please stop.\u201d So, it is hard. And I don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen after this.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-slot=\"qa-root\" class=\"group\/qa relative ps-7 -ms-7 my-8 before:absolute before:inset-0 before:left-2 before:right-auto before:w-1 before:bg-linear-(--gradient-body-divider-bg) before:bg-fixed before:rounded-full\">\n<p><strong>I know it sounds like you\u2019re grappling with the whole idea of mountaineering right now, but before today, can you describe what the draw of the mountain is? Why are so many people so compelled to reach these peaks that can be dangerous?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you stand on top of a mountain, it makes you feel invincible, and that feeling stays with you for a long time. Whether you\u2019ve represented your country as a first, or if you\u2019re the underdog or the girl next door who wasn\u2019t expected to achieve anything much, or the girl who never married and never had kids. And that\u2019s me, by the way, at the age of 46. And everyone is expecting me to check certain cultural boxes or society boxes, and I didn\u2019t. But then I want to check my own boxes. And then mountains give you that kind of strength. They make you feel invincible. And then, when the feeling goes away, you start thinking of the next one, and then the higher one, and then the bigger one, and the more challenging one. It is selfish, I\u2019m telling you. I\u2019m admitting it is a selfish sport. It\u2019s part ego, it\u2019s part selfish, it\u2019s part dreams, and it\u2019s part passion. And then, put them all in the mix, and it\u2019s like, \u201cWhat is going on?\u201d It\u2019s hard.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-slot=\"qa-root\" class=\"group\/qa relative ps-7 -ms-7 my-8 before:absolute before:inset-0 before:left-2 before:right-auto before:w-1 before:bg-linear-(--gradient-body-divider-bg) before:bg-fixed before:rounded-full\">\n<p><strong>It\u2019s hard. And it sounds like this is something you\u2019re going to be wrestling with now. So, you\u2019ve spoken about the drive to achieve and the drive to have that sense of feeling powerful after summiting. But I\u2019m wondering if you can describe the nature and atmosphere at these summits, and what kind of draw that is.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It just gives you a strength I can\u2019t describe, and it makes everything seem easy after that. Whether it\u2019s a break-up or a hardship or you have a problem at work. I always think, I climbed Mount Everest, I can do this. And you set such a great example, especially for the younger girls who, for example, for me as a hijabi mountaineer or a mountaineer who wears hijab, if a girl wants to be an athlete and still wants to exercise her faith and look like a Muslim by covering up, she can still be an athlete. She can still stand on top of the world. And I always take pride in that. And I say, \u201cIf the girl next door, if the underdog, can stand on top of the world, so can you.
