Why Visit Thunder Bay?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Flying into Thunder Bay was my first hint that this trip was going to be something special. Looking out the airplane window, Lake Superior stretched to the horizon like an ocean, with Sleeping Giant Provincial Park on the Sibley Peninsula rising from the water.<\/p>\n

Seeing the landscape from 20,000 feet put into perspective just how wild and outdoorsy this part of Northwestern Ontario really is.<\/p>\n

Over five days, I hiked one of Canada\u2019s best trails, sailed on Lake Superior, crossed Canada\u2019s longest suspension bridge, stood above a 100-metre-deep canyon, explored waterfalls, tried rock climbing and even toured a retired icebreaker ship.<\/p>\n

About Thunder Bay<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The city of Thunder Bay is a mix of rugged wilderness and vibrant city life. From towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls to colourful murals, incredible local restaurants, and a fascinating shipping history, it\u2019s a destination that offers far more than many travellers expect. Whether you\u2019re chasing outdoor adventure or looking for a laid-back Northern Ontario getaway, Thunder Bay is the perfect base to explore one of Canada\u2019s most spectacular landscapes.<\/p>\n

Thunder Bay was formed in 1970 when the neighbouring cities of Port Arthur and Fort William merged into one. Today, it remains an important transportation hub on the Great Lakes, with a rich history rooted in the fur trade, shipping, forestry, and grain exports. The city is also home to vibrant Finnish and Italian communities, whose influence can still be felt through local restaurants, bakeries, and annual cultural traditions.<\/p>\n

Located on the north shore of Lake Superior in Northwestern Ontario, Thunder Bay is roughly halfway between Winnipeg and Sault Ste. Marie along the Trans-Canada Highway. It\u2019s also just an hour from the U.S. border, making it a popular stop on cross-country road trips. Duluth, Minnesota is only a 300-kilometre drive away.<\/p>\n

While many visitors arrive on a cross-country road trip, if you\u2019re flying, Thunder Bay International Airport offers convenient access to the city and the surrounding outdoor attractions, lakes, forests, and trails that surround the city.<\/p>\n

The Ultimate Outdoor Adventure Guide to Thunder Bay<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re planning a summer trip across Canada and heading through Northwestern Ontario, here are 10 adventures that deserve a spot on your Thunder Bay itinerary.<\/p>\n

1. Hike to the Top of the Giant<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If you love to hike, no trip to Thunder Bay is complete without hiking the Top of the Giant.<\/p>\n

Located in Sleeping Giant Provincial Park<\/a>, this difficult-rated 21.8km full-day hike rewards you with one of the most iconic viewpoints in Ontario. Standing 280 metres above Lake Superior, the cliffs drop straight down, giving you a perspective that\u2019s impossible to appreciate from anywhere but from the top.<\/p>\n

This was easily one of the highlights of my trip and one of my favourite hikes in Ontario. (It\u2019s bucket list worthy!)<\/p>\n

2. Sail on Lake Superior<\/strong><\/h3>\n

After spending the day looking down on Lake Superior from the Top of the Giant, it was time to experience it from a completely different perspective.<\/p>\n

I joined a sailing tour with Sail Superior<\/a>, a family-run company based in Thunder Bay. The lake is more than 82,000 square kilometres and the largest in the world by surface area. It holds nearly 10% of the world\u2019s freshwater.<\/p>\n

But what made the experience even more special was discovering that it was the owner\u2019s son\u2019s very first day as captain. Watching River confidently guide the boat along Lake Superior\u2019s shoreline while his dad cheered him on made the afternoon feel much more personal than a typical sightseeing tour.<\/p>\n

With only a light breeze that afternoon, we had time to slowly cruise past Thunder Bay\u2019s massive grain terminals and cargo ships waiting offshore. As a farm kid, I enjoyed learning about how Thunder Bay plays such an important role in Canada\u2019s grain industry, with ships sometimes waiting days for their cargo, before continuing through the Great Lakes.<\/p>\n

Sailing on Lake Superior is one of the best ways to appreciate just how enormous this freshwater lake really is.<\/p>\n

3. Go Rock Climbing on the Canadian Shield<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I\u2019ll admit it, I was a little intimidated when I confirmed rock climbing on my itinerary. While I\u2019ve done plenty of hiking over the years, rock climbing always scares me.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, I was in great hands with Aric Fishman from Outdoor Skills & Thrills<\/a>. He has literally written the book<\/a> about climbing in the area and has dedicated more than 20 years to discovering the best routes within 1.5 hours of the city.<\/p>\n

When the day called for rain, we adjusted our plans and headed to The Buffs, one of the local climbing areas in the city. Aric walked me through everything step-by-step, from tying on to trusting myself on the rock. His excellent coaching made it easy to focus on having fun while finding my way up the wall.<\/p>\n

Thunder Bay\u2019s rugged Canadian Shield offers an incredible natural playground for climbers, with routes for beginners and experienced climbers. If you\u2019re even a little curious about rock climbing, I\u2019d encourage you to give it a try on a guided tour.<\/p>\n

This ended up being one of the most rewarding parts of my trip \u2013 and a reminder that the best adventures are often the ones that make you stretch your comfort zone.<\/p>\n

4. Explore Ouimet Canyon<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If you picture Northern Ontario as endless forests and lakes, Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park will surprise you.<\/p>\n

Carved into the Canadian Shield thousands of years ago, the canyon is approximately 150 metres wide and 100 metres deep, with sheer cliffs dropping to a cool valley floor below. Thanks to this unique microclimate, rare Arctic plants that normally grow much farther north have managed to survive here since the last Ice Age.<\/p>\n

The entire round-trip walk is only two kilometres. A short, accessible boardwalk leads to two lookout platforms overlooking the canyon. This is one of those spots that\u2019s difficult to capture in a photograph, and you really have to stand at the edge to appreciate just how dramatic it is. It\u2019s also quite spectacular in the autumn when the leaf colours are changing.<\/p>\n

There are no services in the parking lot, but there are pit toilets. Park entry passes can be purchased online from Ontario Parks.<\/p>\n

5. Cross Canada\u2019s Longest Suspension Footbridge<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Near Ouimet Canyon, you can traverse across the canyon at Eagle Canyon Adventures<\/a>. This is the home of Canada\u2019s longest suspension bridge. The main bridge stretches 182 metres (600 feet) across the canyon, with a second 91-metre (300-foot) bridge offering another spectacular viewpoint.<\/p>\n

If you are scared of heights, be aware that walking across the bridge on a windy day will get your heart pumping. The wind blows through the canyon and the bridges sway beneath your feet. Hold tight to your phone or camera but don\u2019t forget to stop and enjoy the views.<\/p>\n

Eagle Canyon also has hiking trails down to the canyon floor and along the lake. It\u2019s a lovely walk and in total is about a three-kilometre loop. While there is a zipline on-site, it hasn\u2019t been open for the last few years.<\/p>\n

6. Visit Kakabeka Falls<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Nicknamed the \u201cNiagara of the North,\u201d Kakabeka Falls is one of Northwestern Ontario\u2019s most impressive waterfalls and the second highest in the province. Only 30 kilometres west of Thunder Bay, it\u2019s a quick and easy half-day trip from the city.<\/p>\n

The falls plunge nearly 40 metres into the Kaministiquia River, and the park\u2019s network of boardwalks and viewing platforms lets you experience them from multiple angles. I recommend exploring both sides of the river, but if you\u2019re short on time, the viewpoints closest to the main entrance offer the most dramatic perspectives.<\/p>\n

On the opposite side of the falls, you\u2019ll also find a 1.1-kilometre loop trail that winds through the forest before returning along the river to a downstream viewpoint. It\u2019s a pleasant walk, but if your main goal is seeing the falls, the boardwalks and viewing platforms are the real highlight. They\u2019re easily accessible and provide the best views without requiring a long walk.<\/p>\n

Waterfalls to Visit in Thunder Bay, Ontario<\/strong><\/h4>\n

If you\u2019re hoping to enjoy more waterfalls during your visit, there are several other great spots around Thunder Bay.<\/p>\n

Cascades Conservation Area<\/strong>, twenty minutes (15 kilometres) north of the city, features a series of picturesque rapids and waterfalls connected by wide forest trails.<\/p>\n

Boulevard Lake Falls<\/strong> is right in Thunder Bay and is another beautiful stop that\u2019s perfect for a quick visit or picnic. The stepped rock is nearly 150 metres wide and is below the Port Arthur Spillway. There\u2019s a walkway across the top and a fish ladder to check out.<\/p>\n

7.<\/strong> Dig for Amethyst \u2013 Ontario\u2019s Official Gemstone<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If I had to choose one favourite activity from the entire trip, picking amethyst gemstones would be it.<\/p>\n

Before visiting Thunder Bay, I had no idea the region was home to such a large deposit of amethyst. In fact, Ontario\u2019s official gemstone has been mined here for decades, and several local mines invite visitors to try their luck searching for their own crystals.<\/p>\n

But it turns out, luck isn\u2019t really necessary.<\/p>\n

\n

Armed with a 2-gallon bucket at Panorama Amethyst Mine<\/a>, I wandered through piles of sparkling purple quartz, carefully turning over dozens of different-sized pieces in search of the perfect one. More than 5.5 pounds of raw amethyst later, I had found many <\/strong>perfect pieces to fly home with.<\/p>\n

While Panorama charges an admission fee, the experience is more than searching for gemstones. Owner Tim Lukinuk begins each visit with a short tour, explaining how amethyst forms, the history of the mine, and how the crystals are extracted from the quarry. Before long, you\u2019re out in the digging area, putting that new knowledge to use as you search for your own pieces to take home.<\/p>\n

You can purchase the stones you find, browse larger raw specimens, or shop for polished jewellery and other locally crafted amethyst products in the on-site gift shop.<\/p>\n

If you have extra time, Diamond Willow Amethyst Mine<\/a> is another popular stop nearby. I had hoped to visit both mines but ran out of time, which is probably a good reminder to give yourself longer than you think you\u2019ll need. It\u2019s easy to lose track of time once you start searching.<\/p>\n

Of all the adventures on this trip, this was the one I couldn\u2019t stop talking about afterwards, and the one I\u2019d recommend to anyone visiting Thunder Bay.<\/p>\n

8. Discover Thunder Bay\u2019s Fur Trade History at Fort William Historical Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I\u2019m not typically someone who seeks out living history museums, but Fort William Historical Park changed my expectations.<\/p>\n

Set in the early 1800\u2019s, the reconstructed North West Company fur trading post feels less like a museum and more like a movie set brought to life. Costumed interpreters stay in character as voyageurs, Indigenous peoples, and tradespeople demonstrate what daily life was like during the peak of the Canadian fur trade.<\/p>\n

One of the highlights was spending the afternoon with one of Fort William\u2019s interpreters. Staying completely in character, he effortlessly brought the trading post to life, sharing stories about daily life, the fur trade, and the challenges of living in the early 1800s. His passion and knowledge made the entire experience far more immersive than I ever expected.<\/p>\n

Fort William does an excellent job of making history feel interactive. This is a nice change of pace from Thunder Bay\u2019s outdoor adventures and offers a fascinating look at the region\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

9. Tour a Great Lakes Icebreaker Ship<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A walk through an old Lake Superior ship turned into a crash course in the history of Thunder Bay and the Great Lakes shipping industry. My guide Andrew enthusiastically shared story after story about life aboard the vessel, pointing out everything from the crew\u2019s quarters and surprisingly spacious kitchen (there was even an ice cream fridge!), to exhibits highlighting grain shipping, aviation, railways, lighthouses, and the people who helped shape Northwestern Ontario.<\/p>\n

My favourite story was about the ship\u2019s chef. Because voyages could last for weeks, the chef had their own car stored onboard. When the ship reached port, they\u2019d crane the car out and the chef would drive off to pick up fresh groceries before returning to continue the journey.<\/p>\n

The ship museum covers so much more beyond its own icebreaking history. While you can explore the bridge, engine spaces, and living quarters, you also come away with a much deeper appreciation for Thunder Bay\u2019s role as one of Canada\u2019s most important shipping hubs on the Great Lakes.<\/p>\n

This is a great stop that\u2019s worth adding to your itinerary, especially on a rainy day.<\/p>\n

10. Visit the Terry Fox Monument<\/strong><\/h3>\n

No visit to Thunder Bay feels complete without stopping at the Terry Fox Monument.<\/p>\n

For Canadians, Terry Fox\u2019s story needs little introduction. Nearly 50 years after his Marathon of Hope, his determination and selflessness continue to shape our national identity. Every year, communities across the country come together for Terry Fox Runs, raising millions of dollars for cancer research and ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire new generations.<\/p>\n

Standing at his memorial monument, looking out over Lake Superior, I found myself quite emotional. Like so many Canadians, I grew up learning about Terry Fox in school, running in the annual Terry Fox Run, and hearing about the incredible determination that carried him more than 5,000 kilometres across the country. To finally visit the place where his journey came to an end was incredibly moving.<\/p>\n

The monument marks the area near where Terry was forced to end his cross-Canada run in 1980 after his cancer returned. (The actual spot on the side of the highway is marked by a sign, but it\u2019s too dangerous to pull over and stop there).<\/p>\n

Before you leave, step inside the Thunder Bay Visitor Information Centre. Not only can you pick up maps and brochures to help plan the rest of your trip, but the staff are incredibly knowledgeable about the region. During my visit, one of the tourism ambassadors shared some fantastic local restaurant recommendations and spoke so passionately about Thunder Bay that I added a few more stops to my list.<\/p>\n
