For many visitors, the All-Electric House is more than an exhibit — it’s a trip back to childhood and a window into how Johnson County became the community we know today.

Step inside and you’ll discover colorful kitchens, futuristic appliances, and the optimism of postwar suburbia. But beneath the surface are stories many visitors never realize are there: the house’s role as a model home, the dreams it represented for young families, and the surprising journey that brought it into the Museum. Hidden throughout are remarkable details you might otherwise miss — push-button lighting controls, built-in conveniences, and even a disappearing television.

Now, a new special exhibit inside the All-Electric House uncovers those hidden stories like never before. Through photographs, artifacts, original blueprints, and behind-the-scenes details, visitors can explore how the house was built, marketed, moved, preserved, and transformed into one of the Museum’s most beloved experiences.

More than 60,000 people toured the house in just six months when it opened in 1954. This summer, you can experience it for yourself.

Whether you remember homes like this firsthand or are seeing one for the very first time, there’s something new waiting to discover on your next visit to the Johnson County Museum.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="5594" data-permalink="https://jocohistory.wordpress.com/2026/06/01/theres-no-place-like-an-all-electric-home/1-2004013002/" data-orig-file="https://jocohistory.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1-2004013002.jpg" data-orig-size="1483,1190" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0","alt":""}" data-image-title="1 2004013002" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>The Johnson County Museum’s new special exhibit, There’s No Place Like (an All-Electric) Home!, takes visitors on a deep dive into the home’s history.
