According to a major survey of 1,000 U.S. business leaders conducted by Resume.org, nearly 3 in 10 companies have already eliminated positions and replaced them with AI systems. Even more alarming: by the close of 2026, 37% of companies expect to have done the same.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI adoption is going to reshape the job market more dramatically over the next 18 to 24 months than we have seen in decades,\u201d said Kara Dennison, head of career advising at Resume.org. The numbers back her up.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Scale_of_the_Shift\"\/>The Scale of the Shift<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>The numbers paint a stark picture. In the first six months of 2025 alone, roughly 78,000 tech jobs were directly attributed to AI-driven cuts. Wall Street banks have announced plans to eliminate approximately 200,000 positions over the next three to five years, with entry-level and back-office roles targeted first.<\/p>\n<p>A study from MIT used a labour simulation tool to measure AI\u2019s overlap with actual job skills across 151 million U.S. workers. Its conclusion: AI can already technically replace 11.7% of the total American workforce \u2014 more than one in ten workers. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs projects that generative AI could substitute for the equivalent of 25 million full-time roles globally during 2026 alone.<\/p>\n<p>The survey also found that half of business leaders have already scaled back hiring, 39% conducted layoffs in 2025, and 58% believe further layoffs are likely before the end of this year.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Which_Jobs_Are_Most_at_Risk\"\/>Which Jobs Are Most at Risk?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>Not all jobs face the same level of threat. AI tends to eliminate roles involving repetitive, codifiable tasks \u2014 the kind that can be documented in a manual or learned from a textbook. Roles that require lived experience, physical dexterity, or deep human judgment are far harder to automate.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"High_Risk_Occupations\"\/>High Risk Occupations<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Data entry and administrative roles \u2014 facing up to 95% automation risk, with 7.5 million positions potentially gone by 2027<\/li>\n<li>Paralegals and legal researchers \u2014 paralegal roles face an 80% risk of automation by 2026<\/li>\n<li>Medical transcriptionists \u2014 this field is already 99% automated in many healthcare systems<\/li>\n<li>Retail cashiers \u2014 facing a 65% risk as self-checkout and computer vision systems become standard<\/li>\n<li>Customer service representatives \u2014 one major tech CEO stated that in parts of customer service, one in two roles will disappear<\/li>\n<li>Junior software developers \u2014 U.S. companies adopting AI have already reduced junior hiring by roughly 13%<\/li>\n<li>Content writers and reporters \u2014 digital marketing writing is projected to decline 50% by 2030<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Safer_Occupations\"\/>Safer Occupations<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>Roles that depend on tacit knowledge, human empathy, or physical skill remain largely protected. Jobs in teaching, caregiving, skilled trades, and physical construction are among the least exposed. In fact, 94% of construction companies report difficulty sourcing workers \u2014 a signal that AI is nowhere near replacing tradespeople. Jobs built on emotional intelligence, mentorship, and on-the-ground judgment continue to hold strong.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Real_Companies_Already_Making_the_Switch\"\/>Real Companies Already Making the Switch<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>This is not a theoretical exercise. Major corporations have already admitted to replacing staff with AI systems:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>IBM replaced hundreds of human resources employees with AI tools. Its CEO later confirmed a shift toward hiring AI and quantum computing specialists instead.<\/li>\n<li>Klarna, the Swedish fintech giant, saw its workforce halve over four years, with its CEO stating the company will continue shrinking headcount as AI capabilities grow.<\/li>\n<li>HP announced plans to eliminate up to 6,000 jobs by 2028, citing AI-driven productivity improvements.<\/li>\n<li>WiseTech Global\u2019s CEO declared that manually writing code as the core engineering activity is over, with AI unlocking efficiency gains previously out of reach.<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft confirmed that roughly 30% of its code is now written by AI \u2014 a shift that coincided with thousands of programmer layoffs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Young_Workers_Hit_Hardest\"\/>Young Workers Hit Hardest<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>If there is one group feeling the sharpest edge of this disruption, it is young people entering the workforce. Research from Stanford University found that employment among workers aged 22 to 25 in AI-exposed sectors has fallen by 16%, even as older, experienced workers remain relatively stable.<\/p>\n<p>The reason lies in the nature of AI itself. Younger workers typically bring textbook knowledge but limited experience. AI can replicate textbook knowledge easily \u2014 but it cannot yet replicate the judgment that comes from years on the job. Experienced workers, by contrast, are seeing wages rise in AI-exposed fields, as their tacit knowledge becomes more valuable, not less.<\/p>\n<p>Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, warned in 2025 that AI could eliminate roughly 50% of white-collar entry-level positions within five years \u2014 a prediction that is already beginning to play out in hiring data.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Other_Side_AI_Is_Also_Creating_Jobs\"\/>The Other Side: AI Is Also Creating Jobs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>The picture is not entirely bleak. A European Central Bank study of firms across Europe found that companies investing heavily in AI are actually hiring more workers, not fewer \u2014 at least for now. The researchers noted that many firms are bringing in staff to develop, oversee, and implement the very AI systems they are deploying.<\/p>\n<p>New roles are also emerging at pace. AI and Machine Learning Engineer positions are growing 41.8% year over year. Data Scientist roles, AI ethics officers, and prompt engineering specialists are all in demand. The median annual salary for AI-related roles now stands at approximately $157,000 in the U.S. \u2014 well above the national average. An estimated 350,000 new AI-specific roles are expected to be created in the near term.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Workers_Can_Do_Right_Now\"\/>What Workers Can Do Right Now<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>The workers best positioned to survive \u2014 and thrive \u2014 through this transition are those who learn to work with AI rather than compete against it. Here is what experts recommend:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Learn to use AI tools in your current role \u2014 platforms like ChatGPT, Copilot, and Claude can make you significantly more productive and harder to replace.<\/li>\n<li>Build skills AI cannot easily replicate: leadership, creative problem-solving, emotional intelligence, and complex negotiation.<\/li>\n<li>Upskill into AI-adjacent roles \u2014 prompt engineering, AI oversight, and data ethics are growing fields with well-paying opportunities.<\/li>\n<li>If you are in a high-risk role, begin transitioning now. The workers who act early will have far more options than those who wait.<\/li>\n<li>Consider skilled trades \u2014 construction, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC roles remain in short supply and are highly resistant to automation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Verdict\"\/>The Verdict<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>The AI jobs revolution is not coming \u2014 it is already here. For millions of workers in routine, entry-level, and data-heavy roles, the window to adapt is narrowing fast. For others, particularly those with experience, technical skills, or roles rooted in human judgment, AI represents an opportunity as much as a threat.<\/p>\n<p>The companies replacing workers are not doing so out of malice \u2014 they are doing so because the economics are compelling. The workers who understand this shift and prepare accordingly will be the ones who come out ahead.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Is your job safe?
