The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upattheo2.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Up at the O2<\/a><\/strong> experience is a fun way to get a unique perspective on the city and a great thing to do whether you live in London or are visiting. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having climbed the O2 the first time over a decade ago, it was great to go back recently and try the experience again. If you\u2019re considering the <strong>Up at O2 experience<\/strong>, here is everything you need to know.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links. Located on the Greenwich Peninsula in southeast London, the <strong>giant white tent <\/strong>was originally built as the <strong>Millennium Dome<\/strong> to mark the start of the 21st century. The idea was to clean up and redevelop what was an old, polluted industrial site and to create a celebratory space to herald the <strong>dawn of a new millennium<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It would house the Millennium Experience, a tribute to humanity with 14 themed zones.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the end, however, it was a disaster.\u00a0Over budget, <strong>underwhelming<\/strong> and an opening night fraught with issues, including politicians and celebrities left waiting outside because of ticketing issues. <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/7-2.jpg\" alt=\"Climb the O2, London\" class=\"wp-image-37097\" srcset=\"https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/7-2.jpg 650w, https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/7-2-381x600.jpg 381w, https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/7-2-150x236.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6-2.jpg\" alt=\"Climb the O2, London\" class=\"wp-image-37096\" srcset=\"https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6-2.jpg 650w, https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6-2-381x600.jpg 381w, https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/6-2-150x236.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Millions visited but never the 12 million that were projected and it was <strong>deemed a financial failure<\/strong>. At the time, it felt like the Millennium Dome was never out of the papers and, when the Millennium Experience came to a close, it <strong>lay empty<\/strong>. There were calls for it to be demolished or even moved. Fortunately, however, it was bought by Meridian Delta who began converting it into the <strong>entertainment venue<\/strong> that it is today.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the O2 is one of <strong>London\u2019s biggest arenas<\/strong> where pop stars, rock stars, comedians and sports personalities have all performed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Prince<\/strong> played an extraordinary 21 night residency at the O2 Arena in 2007 and <strong>Take That<\/strong> have played here an incredible 39 times. It\u2019s where the <strong>Laver Cup tennis tournament<\/strong> takes place and where the <strong>AEW<\/strong> broke the attendance record for a professional wrestling event at the O2 Arena with an attendance of 18,992. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As well as shows, the O2 Arena is home to restaurants and bars, outlet shops and the excellent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/globetotting.com\/mamma-mia-the-party-review\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"32550\"><strong>Mamma Mia! dining experience<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>that I think is excellent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2-2.jpg\" alt=\"Climb the O2, London\" class=\"wp-image-37092\" srcset=\"https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2-2.jpg 650w, https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2-2-381x600.jpg 381w, https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2-2-150x236.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/3-2.jpg\" alt=\"Climb the O2, London\" class=\"wp-image-37093\" srcset=\"https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/3-2.jpg 650w, https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/3-2-381x600.jpg 381w, https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/3-2-150x236.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Up at the O2 experience<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Up at the O2<\/strong> launched in June 2012, before the <strong>London Olympic Games<\/strong> both as a way to bring traffic to the O2 centre and to give visitors incredible <strong>views of London<\/strong>. I\u2019ve enjoyed the experience twice, once to celebrate my dad\u2019s 70th birthday (proving that this experience is available to everyone!) and again recently with my teenage daughter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are visiting during peak periods such as the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/globetotting.com\/things-to-do-summer-london\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"31214\">summer holidays<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>or want to take part in one of the <strong>O2\u2019s themed climbs<\/strong> then I highly recommend booking your climb tickets well in advance. We visited mid-morning, mid-week in July and our climb was almost full, as were the ones before and after us.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019re advised to arrive <strong>15 minutes before <\/strong>your climb time, which gives you the chance to complete and sign the waiver form if you haven\u2019t done it online already. You\u2019re then lead into a room where you meet your <strong>climb guide<\/strong> and watch a brief safety video. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After that, it\u2019s time to suit up. Up at the O2 <strong>provide shoes<\/strong> for everyone to use. Even though my daughter and I were both wearing trainers, we were asked to use the O2\u2019s shoes as they have a better grip. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019re given a <strong>numbered box<\/strong> where you can put all your personal belongings that you won\u2019t need during the climb, including shoes and bags (I recommend taking a photo of your number so you don\u2019t forget it!). These boxes are then placed in a <strong>locked trunk<\/strong> so everything will be safe while you\u2019re standing at the top of the dome.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Up at the O2 do provide a <strong>jacket or gilet<\/strong> if it\u2019s cooler (London was in the middle of a heatwave when we visited so extra layers were not needed!). There\u2019s a handy <strong>zipped pocket<\/strong> in the harness where you can put <strong>mobile phones<\/strong> although the only time you\u2019re allowed to take photos is when you are on the viewing platform. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are, however, a number of places where <strong>professional photos<\/strong> are taken including at the start of the climb and at the end. These are available to purchase once you have finished the climb. Personally, I always find these professional photos over-priced so we did not buy ours but they do make a good\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/globetotting.com\/best-souvenirs-from-london\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"26938\">London souvenir<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As soon as we were ready, Jamie <strong>checked every safety harness<\/strong> individually, and we walked up a set of stairs to the start of the climb.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The climb itself takes place along a <strong>380m-long suspended fabric walkway<\/strong>. Once you\u2019re clipped in, you stay attached to the safety-latch system until you reach the <strong>viewing platform<\/strong>. The start of the climb is the steepest point reaching 28 degrees on the way up but there\u2019s no rush, and everyone is allowed to take their time. The walkway has a little bounce to it although you are reminded that it\u2019s not a trampoline and should not jump!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It takes about 10 minutes to talk up to the top and, once you arrive at the viewing platform, you are unclipped and can walk around freely.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"650\" src=\"https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2-3.jpg\" alt=\"Climb the O2, London\" class=\"wp-image-37099\" srcset=\"https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2-3.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2-3-800x508.jpg 800w, https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2-3-768x488.jpg 768w, https:\/\/globetotting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2-3-150x95.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Top<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u200b<\/strong>Groups are given around <strong>15 minutes<\/strong> at the viewing platform. If you have ordered a drink when checking in (everything from water to Prosecco is available) then your guide will hand these out now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some guides give a talk at the top, explaining some of the <strong>buildings<\/strong> that you can see from this vantage point and tell fun stories or anecdotes about London. Our guide was on hand to <strong>answer questions<\/strong> but did not give a talk, which seemed a shame. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, there are<strong> information panels<\/strong> telling the history of the <strong>River Thames<\/strong> and pointing out the names of some of the more famous buildings that you can see.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s no denying that it\u2019s a <strong>great view<\/strong> from the top. It\u2019s also a unique vantage point. Many of London\u2019s viewpoints such as the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/globetotting.com\/the-london-eye-review\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"36854\">London Eye<\/a><\/strong> are located in the <strong>central London<\/strong> whereas the O2\u2019s position on the Greenwich peninsula, gives you a new perspective on the city including\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/globetotting.com\/things-to-do-canary-wharf-london\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"21083\">Canary Wharf<\/a><\/strong>, Tower Bridge, historic Greenwich, the Olympic Park, and the Emirates Cable Car.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once it\u2019s time to go \u2013 typically when the next climb group has arrived \u2013 you clip back in to the <strong>safety rail<\/strong> and make your way down the blue walkway. The final part of the descent is steep but again, you are told to take your time. Here are some other interesting facts about this unique venue:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The O2\u2019s 12 bright yellow masts represent the 12 months of the year.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The steepest part of the climb is at 30 degrees.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The summit is 52 metres high, representing the 52 weeks of the year.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The viewing platform is 12 metres across with a diameter of 365 metres.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The roof appeared in the opening sequence of the 1999 James Bond film,\u00a0<em>The World Is Not Enough<\/em>, when Pierce Brosnan lands on it after jumping from a hot air balloon.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why you should book Up at the O2<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re are looking for a <strong>fun and unique sightseeing experience<\/strong> that now only shows you the sights but gives you a rush of adrenaline along the way then Up at the O2 is a great experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bThere are plenty of viewing platforms in London, but there\u2019s nothing quite like this climb across the <strong>world\u2019s largest tensile structure<\/strong> (where the roof fabric is held up in tension by cables and masts).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s <strong>inclusive and accessible<\/strong>: Up at the O2 offer a special wheelchair climb using a <strong>bespoke wheelchair<\/strong> and a team of four specialised guides.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a fun thing to do with <strong>family members and friends<\/strong>, and they also offer <strong>themed climbs<\/strong> including Summer Sessions with live music and drinks, yoga sessions on the viewing platform, and sunset climbs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 90 minutes long, it\u2019s easy to add to a <strong>London day out<\/strong>. I recommend doing this as the first or last stop on your itinerary, perhaps choosing a twilight climb watch the city lights come to life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a unique London experience to do for a <strong>special occasion<\/strong> \u2013 my mum organised for my family to do a climb to celebrate my dad\u2019s 70th birthday, which we all loved. \u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to book to Climb the O2<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Timings:<\/strong> Climbs run every 15 minutes and operate seven days a week for daytime, sunset and twilight climbs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Departure point:<\/strong> Tours leave from Basecamp, which is located outside the main entrance of The O2. The nearest tube station is North Greenwich Station on the Jubilee line.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Group sizes:<\/strong> It\u2019s a maximum of 18 people per group.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tour duration:<\/strong> 90 minutes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Minimum Ag\u0119:<\/strong> Participants should be aged 8 years or above 1.2m tall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ticket prices:<\/strong> Daytime tickets start from \u00a337 for weekday climbs and from \u00a342 for weekend climbs.
