today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Philip IV added some of the palace\u2019s most famous features, like the Tour de l\u2019Horloge, home to Paris\u2019s very first public clock, and the stunning Salle des Gens d\u2019Armes, which was the main banquet hall for the royal guards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But as the monarchy became wealthier and more powerful, later kings wanted more comfort.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The royal court eventually moved to <a href=\"https:\/\/worldbyisa.com\/louvre-museum-must-see-marterpieces\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/worldbyisa.com\/louvre-museum-must-see-marterpieces\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\"><strong>the Louvre<\/strong><\/a> and later to detention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The section of the palace used as the prison came to be known as the Conciergerie, named after the \u201cconcierge,\u201d an official responsible for maintaining order and supervising prisoners.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And so began the building\u2019s long and complex life as a prison at the heart of the city.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"Life_Inside_the_Prison_Walls\">Life Inside the Prison Walls<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the 15th century, the Conciergerie had already gained a reputation, and not necessarily a good one.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It became one of the main prisons of Paris, located conveniently close to the Palais de Justice, where trials were held.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conditions inside depended entirely on who you were.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The poor, known as pailleux (from paille, meaning straw), were packed into damp, filthy cells with nothing but straw to sleep on.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wealthier prisoners, however, could pay for better treatment, even getting private rooms with furniture, beds, and meals brought from nearby restaurants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This contrast between luxury and misery would only deepen during the French Revolution, when the Conciergerie became one of the most dreaded places in France.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"The_French_Revolution_and_the_Reign_of_Terror\">The French Revolution and the Reign of Terror<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fast forward to 1789, when the French Revolution broke out, and France entered a period of massive political and social change.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By 1793, the Revolution had taken a darker turn: the Reign of Terror, a period marked by paranoia, radical politics, and mass executions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Conciergerie became the headquarters of the Revolutionary Tribunal, the court in charge of judging those accused of crimes against the Revolution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn\u2019t just a prison anymore; it was the last stop before the class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once someone was brought to the Conciergerie, the chances of leaving alive were slim.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trials were quick, often lasting just a few hours, and guilty verdicts were almost guaranteed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From there, prisoners were taken directly to the Place de la R\u00e9volution (today\u2019s Place de la Concorde) to be executed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the Terror, more than 2,600 people passed through the Conciergerie on their way to the guillotine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among them were nobles, clergymen, revolutionaries, and ordinary citizens alike, anyone accused of being an \u201cenemy of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"Marie_Antoinettes_Final_Days\">Marie Antoinette\u2019s Final Days<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most famous prisoner ever held at the Conciergerie was, without a doubt, Queen Marie Antoinette.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After her husband, King Louis XVI, was executed in January 1793, she was moved here from the Temple prison a few months later.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her cell was small, damp, and cold, a far cry from the luxurious life she had known in Versailles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guards watched her constantly, even while she slept.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For over two months, she lived in total isolation, awaiting her class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She was accused of treason, conspiring with foreign powers, and draining the national treasury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On October 16, 1793, Marie Antoinette was found guilty and sentenced to death.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That same morning, she was taken from the Conciergerie in an open cart through the streets of Paris, wearing a plain white dress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowds jeered as she passed. She was executed by guillotine at the Place de la R\u00e9volution, bringing an end to her tragic story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, visitors can see the memorial chapel built on the site of her cell.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a quiet, somber space, and one of the most moving parts of the visit.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span
