My absolute gratitude to the lovely Freya North for sending me a surprise copy of Summer at Flora’s House. Not only was I completely thrilled to receive it, but finding myself quoted on the back cover felt such a privilege. It’s my pleasure to share my review of Summer at Flora’s House today.

If you’d like to see why I’m so delighted to review Summer at Flora’s House, if you head here, you’ll find my reviews of other books by Freya North.

Summer at Flora’s House was published on 1st July 2026 and is available for purchase here.

Two lost souls… and the wild, beautiful island between them

Fiercely independent, Liza never takes time off work but she planned this holiday months ago. She’s here for a reason, determined to shed one skin and try on another. Somewhere on this wild and beautiful island at the edge of the Atlantic, she’s hoping that answers can be found. Liza needs a break from her high-powered life.

From the very first paragraph of Summer at Flora’s House I genuinely felt a total sense of physical belonging. Reading it felt every bit as if I had come home as returning to Harris feels to Jamie. I could not have enjoyed this novella more.

Freya North’s writing is exquisite. Her ability to weave in the history, geography, geology and flora of the island in a totally natural way is astonishing. As Liza explores and gets to know Harris, the reader is alongside her because of the descriptions that are equally elegant and brutal depending on the personality the island is showing. Harris is every bit a living, breathing character in Summer at Flora’s House as are Liza and Jamie.

And my goodness did I love Liza and Jamie. Their first person viewpoints add intimacy and interest because it is as if they are sharing their innermost thoughts directly with the reader. Some minor characters from Christmas at Flora’s House and Spring at Flora’s House, like Shona, are familiar and comforting to encounter once again, but the fact that Jamie has a history with the island is just wonderful. He is like an anchor that grounds the narrative and makes it all the more believable. And just like an anchor, he can be moved and taken to new horizons.

As Liza and Jamie’s relationship develops it is mesmerising. I thought the way Freya North didn’t just give them a ‘will they, won’t they’ romance, but rather added a mature and realistic interaction, provided such a relatable and satisfying aspect to the story. In a sense, there’s no great drama here, but rather deep, deep human connection, hope and self-awareness. Summer at Flora’s House is written with such deft empathy that it’s impossible not to keep thinking about Liza and Jamie long after the final page is turned.

I also loved the concept of creativity; the art, the photography and the sense that perfection comes, in fact, from imperfection. Equally affecting is the concept of contentment and being true to oneself. It’s so hard to convey the intensity and emotion of the quiet moments in the story without spoilers, but Freya North is like a musician in her writing. It’s often the pause, the stillness, that is the most profound moment.

In case it isn’t obvious, I adored Summer at Flora’s House. It’s a beautifully written, absorbing and enchanting story of connection that feels, quite simply, perfect. One of my books of the year for sure!

Freya North’s novels explore the emotions and complexities of everyday relationships and families. First published in 1996 with her ground-breaking debut Sally, Freya has written 15 further bestsellers including the highly acclaimed Little Wing and The Unfinished Business of Eadie Browne. Translated into many languages, Freya won the Romantic Novel of the Year award for Pillow Talk and has been short-listed for others. A sense of place is central to Freya’s writing. Never a backdrop, always a leading character, locations featured in her novels include New England, France, British Columbia, North Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Norfolk, Freya’s own county of Hertfordshire and of course the Outer Hebrides.

Freya holds degrees in History of Art from the University of Manchester and the Courtauld Institute, London. She lives on a small farm in Hertfordshire with her dogs, horses and sheep. She enjoys ceramic classes and road cycling and loves to connect with her readers.

For further information, visit Freya’s website, follow her on X @freya_north or find Freya on Instagram and Facebook.

![""]("https://lindasbookbag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/summer-at-floras-house.jpg")

These days, Jamie divides his life between Sheffield and his beloved Harris, a place of solace and calm since childhood. Passionate about preserving the secrets of the land, he’s just as protective of its people. He’s happily stuck in his ways because that’s the safest place to be.

Summer in Harris stretches ahead: a time of endless sunshine and relentless rain, wind-whipped seas and sugar-fine beaches, clouds of midgies and the famous machair bursting with wildflowers. Liza and Jamie meet and wish they hadn’t. But the island has its own plans for both of them.

My Review of Summer at Flora’s House
