Three lions have died at Tama Zoological Park in Tokyo, Japan, after several animals became seriously ill during the recent heatwave.

The first signs of illness appeared on 18 July, when two of the zoo’s 16 lions lost their appetite and became less active. Within four days, 10 lions were receiving treatment after showing similar symptoms.

According to the zoo, affected lions showed severe loss of appetite, were unable to stand and, in some cases, lost consciousness.

The first lion to die was Mugi, a three-year-old female born at Tama Zoo. She died on 28 July. An 11-year-old female named Ichigo died on 31 July, followed by Luena, a 15-year-old female, on 2 August.

The exact cause of death is still under investigation.

However, the zoo said post-mortem examinations found signs of severe dehydration and multiple organ failure in all three lions. Veterinarians believe heat stress was likely a contributing factor.

Three other lions are still unable to stand and are receiving intensive care, including intravenous fluids, liver-support medication and vitamins.

The zoo said four lions have recovered or are showing signs of improvement. Only six of the 16 lions remained healthy throughout the heatwave.

To help keep the animals cool, staff are using water sprays, industrial fans and portable cooling units inside the lion enclosure.

Tama Zoo closed its lion exhibit on 23 July to focus on treating the animals. The Lion Bus service, which allows visitors to view lions from inside a specially designed vehicle, also remains closed.

The zoo said it is strengthening measures to protect the lions from extreme heat.

Japan has experienced one of its hottest summers in recent years, with prolonged heatwaves pushing temperatures above 35°C (95°F) in many parts of the country. Authorities have issued repeated heat warnings as the extreme weather has affected animals and people.

The Animal Reader is funded almost entirely by its readers.
