So we see Harbour Air seaplanes taking off from Vancouver Harbour all the time.

After watching the seaplanes up close (and from the windows of our apartment), we decided to try one out for ourselves on our family trip to Victoria.

My husband, toddler and I took the seaplane to Victoria from Vancouver and back again in June 2026. It was the first time flying in a seaplane for my daughter and me and the second time for my husband, Colin, though it’s been many years since his first flight.

I’ve only ever taken the ferry from Vancouver to Victoria on past trips, as most people do. It’s seen as the default route. I honestly hadn’t even considered taking a seaplane to Victoria until we moved next door to the harbour terminal.

Taking a Harbour Air seaplane from Vancouver to Victoria promises a fast, convenient and beautiful journey. But could it really live up to the hype? And was it worth the cost?

Having flown to Victoria and back, it’s a toss up for me! I loved the convenience and views but the price and motion sickness weren’t ideal. As of August 2026, Harbour Air is advertising flights from Downtown Vancouver to Downtown Victoria starting at $99 CAD ($70 USD) one-way.

We paid $97 CAD per person on the way there and $99 CAD per person on the way back for our June 2026 flights. Baby C, who was classed as an infant (0-23 months) and sat on our laps, flew free!

I was actually impressed that we managed to find flights for that low, as I thought they’d be more limited. If you are flexible with your departure day or time, that will help a lot in securing the cheapest price.

It’s important to note that Harbour Air has different fare categories with different pricing: light, value, comfort and flex.

We chose the lowest fare option (light) which meant our flight was non-refundable, non-changeable, and we only had a 10 lb per person luggage allowance.

If you need more flexibility or luggage space, you may want to upgrade to a higher fare class.

However, keep in mind that excess luggage is charged at $3/lb, so depending on ticket prices and how much extra luggage you want to bring, it may make more sense to just pay the excess fee rather than upgrading to a higher fare class.

Where do the seaplanes depart and arrive?

One of the best parts about the seaplane experience is that the planes take off from downtown Vancouver and land in downtown Victoria.

This is in huge contrast to the ferry, which departs from Tsawwassen (1 hour drive from downtown Vancouver) and arrives in Swartz Bay (45 min drive from downtown Victoria).

We live a 10 minute walk from the Vancouver Harbour – I can actually see seaplanes taking off from my window as I type this – so being able to walk over to our plane was incredibly convenient.

I loved arriving right in Victoria’s Inner Harbour too. If you fly from YVR South, that goes down to $79 CAD ($56) one-way.

The standard adult fare for BC Ferries from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay is $21 CAD ($15 USD) one-way. So clearly, much cheaper!

You do have to factor in what it would cost to get to Tsawwassen from Vancouver and to Victoria from Swartz Bay. If you’re taking public transportation, that should only run you a couple of dollars per person, but a rental car will obviously be much more.

If you’re taking your car onto the ferry, the cost is $89 CAD ($63 USD) one-way. You still have to pay the passenger price for each person in the car. And you’ll need to factor in gas, parking and rental car costs, if applicable.

So if you’re only one person with a car, it could be cheaper to fly ($99) than take the ferry ($89 + $21). But if you have a few people in your group or you’re not bringing on a car, the ferry will work out cheaper.

And depending on your trip, having a car in Victoria could be helpful or could be a hindrance. If you’re staying in the downtown core, a car isn’t needed and you’ll just be paying to park it.

But if you’re doing more exploring on Vancouver Island, such as heading out to Tigh Na Mara for a spa day, it may be handy to have a car.

2. And any luggage you do want to bring will cost you!

The cheapest fares on Harbour Air (in the Light fare class) include just 10 lbs of luggage per person; excess luggage is charged at $3/lb. You can pay for a higher fare class with a larger luggage limit, up to 50 lbs/person with the Flex fare.

BC Ferries, on the other hand, is much more generous with their luggage limits. If you’re driving onto the ferry, you can pack your car full with as much luggage as you want and no on will mind!

If you’re walking on, you’re also free to bring pretty much whatever you can carry. They even offer a free checked baggage service for bags up to 50 lbs. Anything heavier than that you’ll have to carry on yourself, but you don’t have to pay for it.

So if you’re an over-packer, that’s going to be an expensive problem on the seaplane.

3. And once you’re there, make sure you visit the Parliament Buildings and try afternoon tea.

Plan the rest of your Victoria and Vancouver Island trip with these posts:

I’ve taken the ferry from Vancouver to Victoria quite a few times in my life but this year, I wanted to try something different, something more convenient and something with incredible views.
