I went in thinking it would be a short and easy forest walk. At just around 20 kilometres over 2.5 days, it looked simple on paper. I underestimated it completely.<\/p>\n<p>This blog is both personal and practical. Unlike most treks, this trail allows you to <strong>walk on foot inside a notified tiger reserve<\/strong>, accompanied by trained forest staff.<\/p>\n<p>This is not a safari. This is not a jungle walk near a resort. This is an immersive forest experience where you move through real wildlife corridors.<\/p>\n<p>The trek is organised by <strong>Indiahikes<\/strong>, in coordination with the forest department and the Madhya Pradesh Tourism department.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pench Tiger Trail Trek by Indiahikes | Walking Inside Pench Tiger Reserve on Foot\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ToghSBBcQI4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Best_Time_to_Do_the_Pench_Tiger_Trail\"\/><strong>Best Time to Do the Pench Tiger Trail<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>I did this trek at the <strong>end of January<\/strong>, and it was a great time to be in the forest.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>best time to do the Pench Tiger Trail is between August and January<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>August to October (Monsoon):<\/strong> Lush greenery, flowing streams, active insect and bird life<\/li>\n<li><strong>November to January (Winter):<\/strong> Pleasant days, cold nights, clearer forest floors, strong wildlife movement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By January, the days are hot and nights can get quite cold, especially near the river camps, so warm layers are essential.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Reach_Pench_Tiger_Trail\"\/><strong>How to Reach Pench Tiger Trail?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>Nagpur is the nearest major city and the main access point for the trek.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Well connected by <a href=\"https:\/\/skyscanner.pxf.io\/AW266x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">flights<\/a> and trains from Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and more. I took an <a href=\"https:\/\/skyscanner.pxf.io\/AW266x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Air India Express flight<\/a> the previous day.<\/li>\n<li>Indiahikes arranges a common pickup from Nagpur Airport or Nagpur Railway Station at 11:00 AM.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From Nagpur, it is a <strong>3-hour drive<\/strong> to Sakata village, where <strong>Camp 1903<\/strong> is located.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Detailed_Itinerary_of_Pench_Tiger_Trail_by_Indiahikes\"\/><strong>Detailed Itinerary of Pench Tiger Trail by Indiahikes<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Day_0_Day_1_Drive_to_Camp_1903\"\/><strong>Day 0 \/ Day 1: Drive to Camp 1903<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>After landing in Nagpur, we drove towards Pench. The journey slowly shifted from city roads to villages and then to forest roads with checkposts.<\/p>\n<p>Camp 1903 is a quiet campsite close to the forest boundary. From this point on, the mindset changes. You walk with awareness. This site is surely known for its sunset. Nights here are quiet and dark. This region is also known for its clear night skies, making stargazing a bonus experience. Even though we had a bit of rain, the clouds cleared up by night, and we had a Jupiter sighting through the Indiahikes telescope.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Day_3_Nayegaon_Lake_to_Nalyer_Camp_Bawanthadi_River_Walk\"\/><strong>Day 3: Nayegaon Lake to Nalyer Camp (Bawanthadi River Walk)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>This was the most memorable day of the trek.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Distance: ~7 kilometres<\/li>\n<li>Duration: ~7 hours<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The day began with dense forest sections where we saw multiple wildlife signs. Tiger scratch marks on trees, movement trails, and subtle indicators that you would miss without trained forest staff. Staying at Swiss tents was a luxury. Beds, blankets, charging points, table fans, and an (almost) attached bathroom with water. You can take a shower here if you like.<\/p>\n<p>That evening stood out. The <strong>Range Officer joined us for dinner<\/strong>, which added immense value to the experience. Listening to someone who works on the ground every day gives you a deeper respect for the forest.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Day_4_Nalyer_Camp_to_Jhandi_Matta_and_Exit_via_Rukhad_Gate\"\/><strong>Day 4: Nalyer Camp to Jhandi Matta and Exit via Rukhad Gate<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Trek distance: ~5 kilometres<\/li>\n<li>Duration: 2 to 3 hours<\/li>\n<li>Elevation: 800 feet<\/li>\n<li>Plus a short buffer zone safari (half an hour)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The final day involved trekking through bamboo forests, walking through corridors, and open grassland patches. These grasslands are grazing areas for herbivores, including barasingha, the state animal of Madhya Pradesh.<\/p>\n<p>We heard stories of Pench\u2019s famous tigers \u2013 <strong>Kuraigad Male<\/strong> and <strong>Bhajirao<\/strong>. After days inside the dense forest, seeing the vastness of Pench from above was powerful.<\/p>\n<p>From the transit road, a safari vehicle picked us up for a short buffer zone safari to <strong>Rukhad Gate<\/strong>, marking the official end of the Pench Tiger Trail.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_the_Pench_Tiger_Trail_Difficult\"\/><strong>Is the Pench Tiger Trail Difficult?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>In terms of distance and terrain, this is an <strong>easy and accessible trek<\/strong>. Walking on foot inside a tiger reserve, with trained forest staff, across real wildlife habitats, is a rare privilege.<\/p>\n<p>This forest is often linked to the stories of <strong>Mowgli<\/strong> from The Jungle Book, and when you walk here, you understand why those stories were imagined in the first place.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_to_Stay_in_Nagpur\"\/><strong>Where to Stay in Nagpur?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>During my trip to Pench, I reached Nagpur a day early and left a day later. For these two nights, I stayed at two different OYO properties.<\/p>\n<p>Despite OYO having a mixed reputation, both stays were perfectly fine. The room rates were around ?2,500 and ?3,500 per night. I stayed at <a href=\"https:\/\/booking.stay22.com\/solopassport\/b00zkEpoF6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Super Townhouse<\/a> on Central Bazaar Road and at <a href=\"https:\/\/booking.stay22.com\/solopassport\/WeNnrNSC4q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Hotel Airport KK<\/a>. Both were booked through Booking.com.<\/p>\n<p>Between the two, I preferred <a href=\"https:\/\/booking.stay22.com\/solopassport\/WeNnrNSC4q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Hotel Airport KK<\/a>. The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. The only drawback was the food arrangement. The hotel does not have an in-house restaurant and relies on a cloud kitchen.
