the entire top five.\u00a0 It accomplished this with <strong>Ella Langley<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas\u201d \u2013 now at No. 1 for its 16<sup>th<\/sup> non-consecutive week (a non-holiday record for female solo acts) \u2013 followed by <strong>Morgan Wallen<\/strong>\u2019s new single \u201cBeen by Now\u201d debuting at No. 2.\u00a0 <strong>Taylor Swift<\/strong>\u2019s return to country \u2013 \u201cI Knew It, I Knew You\u201d \u2013 slips to No. 3 after leading the chart in June; the Langley\/Wallen duet \u201cI Can\u2019t Love You Anymore\u201d holds at No. 4; and newcomer <strong>Stella Lefty<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cBoston\u201d is at No. 5 (falling from its No. 3 peak).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" genres have pulled off top five sweeps before \u2013 rock, disco and R&amp;B\/hip-hop among them \u2013 and individual superstars have famously done it by themselves. \u00a0Still, the achievement is remarkable for country music \u2013 a format that has been around since before the Hot 100 was inaugurated in 1958, and one whose popularity has been cyclical in the past but has been on a steady upward trend in the 2020s.<\/p>\n<p>To commemorate this remarkable feat, DJROBBLOG thought it would be interesting to explore some other historic top five charts in Hot 100 history, not limited to artists or genre achievements, but including some unusual statistical feats that chart geeks cherish.\u00a0 This recap begins, of course, with the first time any act occupied all five of the top spots history-making top five lists happened in April 1964 when the <strong>Beatles<\/strong> occupied all five of the top positions.\u00a0 It was solidified when their latest single, \u201cCan\u2019t Buy Me Love,\u201d catapulted from No. 27 to No. 1 (then a historic leap into the top position) while their prior top five hits all maintained that status.\u00a0 Of course, no other act would duplicate this feat in the pre-streaming age, while <strong>Drake<\/strong>, <strong>Taylor Swift<\/strong>, and <strong>Kendrick Lamar<\/strong> have done it since.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Soul Train Effect? musicians had long been a vital part of the rock-and-roll era and before.\u00a0 But it wasn\u2019t until May 1972 when Black artists finally occupied each of the top five positions on the Hot 100, which included big hits by the Queen of Soul, <strong>Aretha Franklin<\/strong>, and the future King of Pop, <strong>Michael Jackson<\/strong>.\u00a0 This wasn\u2019t an anomaly; many soul hits crossed over to the top ten of the Hot 100 throughout 1972 and beyond.\u00a0 The timing is intriguing.\u00a0 Don Cornelius\u2019 <em>Soul Train<\/em> had begun national syndication only the previous year, giving unprecedented weekly television exposure to many of the Black acts increasingly crossing over to pop audiences in the early to mid-1970s, like the <strong>Staple Singers<\/strong>, the <strong>O\u2019Jays<\/strong>, <strong>Al Green<\/strong>, and the <strong>Spinners<\/strong>.\u00a0 This blogger believes the program was one important accelerant of that crossover.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Order of Things \u2013 June 4, 1977<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" several top five charts in the preceding years totally occupied by past, present and future No. 1 hits, never had there been one where the No. 1 song was followed in succession by the next four weeks\u2019 No. 1 records \u2013 in the exact order they ruled \u2013 until June 4, 1977.\u00a0 <strong>Stevie Wonder<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cSir Duke\u201d was nixed the following week by <strong>K.C. &amp; the Sunshine Band<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cI\u2019m Your Boogie Man,\u201d which in turn was replaced at the top by <strong>Fleetwood Mac\u2019<\/strong>s \u201cDreams,\u201d then <strong>Marvin Gaye<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cGot to Give It Up,\u201d and finally <strong>Bill Conti<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cGonna Fly Now (Theme from \u2018Rocky\u2019).\u201d\u00a0 Those tunes all followed the same single position climb each week until they reached No. 1.\u00a0 This unusual pattern was broken when <strong>Foreigner<\/strong>\u2019s debut hit, \u201cFeels Like the First Time,\u201d inched its way into the top five and peaked at No. 4.\u00a0 This kind of sequencing hasn\u2019t been repeated since.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RSO and Barry Gibb \u2013 well, almost \u2013 March 18, category of two near-misses combining to make for an otherwise historic week in March 1978.\u00a0 Four of the top five were RSO singles.\u00a0 Four of the top five had a direct Gibb connection.\u00a0 <strong><em>But they weren\u2019t the same four.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 First, the <strong>Bee Gees<\/strong> were obviously dominating with the top two songs (\u201cNight Fever\u201d and \u201cStayin\u2019 Alive\u201d).\u00a0 Meanwhile, their fingerprints were all over <strong>Samantha Sang<\/strong>\u2019s No. 3 hit, \u201cEmotion,\u201d which they wrote and sang backup on, as well as little brother <strong>Andy Gibb<\/strong>\u2019s No. 5 single \u2013 the former No. 1 \u201c(Love Is) Thicker Than Water,\u201d written by <strong>Barry Gibb<\/strong>.\u00a0 The only song not directly affiliated with the Bee Gees was \u201cLay Down Sally,\u201d by their labelmate <strong>Eric Clapton<\/strong>.\u00a0 Thus, \u201cEmotion\u201d was the lone RSO exception, having been released on the Private Stock label after it was passed over for inclusion in the <em>Saturday Night Fever<\/em> soundtrack.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Disco Didn\u2019t Suck on the Chart \u2013 March 17, the Bee Gees\u2019 phenomenal week on the Hot 100, disco\u2019s domination of the Hot 100 culminated with the top five songs on the chart dated March 17, 1979, including classics by <strong>Gloria Gaynor<\/strong>, the Bee Gees, <strong>Rod Stewart<\/strong>, <strong>Donna Summer<\/strong>, and <strong>Peaches &amp; Herb<\/strong>.\u00a0 Disco\u2019s domination of the first half of 1979 was notorious, but the only other week in which the entire top five consisted of disco songs was July 21, 1979, just days after the infamous Disco Demolition Night at Comiskey Park in Chicago (July 12), in which thousands of disco records were blown up in an explosion sparked by the \u201cDisco Sucks\u201d movement.\u00a0 In other words, just nine days after thousands gathered in Chicago to declare disco dead \u2013 rather explosively \u2013 disco still owned America\u2019s top five.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All Women, No Problem \u2013 June 30, 1979<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image infamous disco demolition, songs by genre Queen Donna Summer continued to rule the chart.\u00a0 But in one June week, she was joined by <strong>Anita Ward<\/strong>, <strong>Sister Sledge<\/strong>, and blues-rock singer <strong>Rickie Lee Jones<\/strong> to combine for a historic chart in which \u2013 for the first time \u2013 all five of the top songs were by women.\u00a0 On that same chart, Summer became the first woman to own two of the top three singles with \u201cHot Stuff\u201d and \u201cBad Girls,\u201d a feat she would repeat later in 1979 with \u201cDim All the Lights\u201d and \u201cNo More Tears (Enough Is Enough)\u201d (a duet with <strong>Barbra Streisand<\/strong>).\u00a0 A little-known fact is that Rickie Lee Jones\u2019 hit would join the others on Billboard\u2019s Hot Soul Singles (yes, \u201cChuck E.\u2019s In Love\u201d made the soul chart) the following week \u2013 where it peaked at No. 79 \u2013 making for an unusual reverse crossover history is made because everything moves.\u00a0 In August 1982, history was made because practically nothing did.\u00a0 The Hot 100 chart had slowed considerably in 1982 compared to other years.\u00a0 Songs would attain and hold their peak positions for weeks on end, tying 1982 with three earlier years for the fewest No. 1 singles (15) during a calendar year in the pre-SoundScan era.\u00a0 But the chart\u2019s slow turnover was epitomized in August when the top five songs all held their positions for four consecutive weeks, something that had never happened previously.\u00a0 The stalemate ended in September when <strong>Steve Miller Band<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cAbracadabra\u201d leapfrogged two spots to become the new No. 1 single.\u00a0 Meanwhile, Fleetwood Mac\u2019s \u201cHold Me\u201d established a then-record for most consecutive weeks at a position other than No. 1 with seven weeks at the No. 4 spot.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hip-Hop Hoopla \u2013 March 13, 2004<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure R&amp;B\/Hip-Hop dominated the Hot 100 in historic fashion, another historic first occurred when, on the chart dated March 13, rappers were credited on each of the top five hits in either a lead or feature role.\u00a0 <strong>Ludacris<\/strong> and <strong>Lil Jon<\/strong> were guests on <strong>Usher<\/strong>\u2019s No. 1 \u201cYeah!,\u201d while <strong>Chingy<\/strong>, <strong>Twista<\/strong>, <strong>Kanye West<\/strong>, <strong>OutKast<\/strong>, and <strong>J-Kwon<\/strong> followed.\u00a0 The entire top ten that week were by R&amp;B\/Hip-Hop acts, including three more by rappers at Nos. 6, 8, and 10.\u00a0 The only non-rap entries: <strong>Beyonc\u00e9<\/strong>\u2019s \u201c<strong>Me, Myself and I<\/strong>\u201d at No. 7 and <strong>Ruben Studdard<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cSorry 2004\u201d at No. 9.\u00a0 And this wasn\u2019t merely a great week for R&amp;B and hip-hop.\u00a0 Every song that reached No. 1 during the entire calendar year contains songs at different points in their chart journey \u2013 some rising toward No. 1, others falling away from it.\u00a0 While previous top five lists (including the one from June 1977 highlighted above) contained mixtures of past and future No. 1 singles, not before 2008 had the top five consisted entirely of songs that had <em>already been<\/em> to No. 1.\u00a0 Having all five already crowned means the upper echelon was unusually clogged with former proven leaders.\u00a0 This first occurred on the chart dated July 19 when <strong>Katy Perry<\/strong>\u2019s then-No. 1 \u201cI Kissed a Girl\u201d was joined in the top five by four prior chart toppers from <strong>Rihanna<\/strong>, <strong>Lil Wayne<\/strong>, <strong>Leona Lewis<\/strong>, and <strong>Coldplay<\/strong>.\u00a0 This feat would be repeated several more times, including in 2011, with Katy Perry again at the top (\u201cFirework\u201d) while other former No. 1s by <strong>Bruno Mars<\/strong>, <strong>Ke$ha<\/strong>, Rihanna, and <strong>P!nk<\/strong> jostled for position in the top five. \u00a0The June 13, 2020, chart took it a step further when the entire top popularity of streaming platforms has made the Hot 100 return of holiday songs an annual occurrence during December and early January each year.\u00a0 While the tradition had been growing since 2018, it manifested in holiday songs\u2019 first-time domination of the Hot 100\u2019s top five spots on January 2, 2021.\u00a0 That week, <strong>Mariah Carey<\/strong>\u2019s perennial chart topper \u201cAll I Want for Christmas Is You\u201d was joined by faves from <strong>Brenda Lee<\/strong>, <strong>Bobby Helms<\/strong>, <strong>Burl Ives<\/strong>, and <strong>Andy Williams<\/strong>.\u00a0 Carey\u2019s classic has since taken the crown for the longest No. 1 run with 22 nonconsecutive weeks and counting, although Ella Langley \u2013 the artist who leads this week\u2019s historic country top five \u2013 has that record in her sights.<\/p>\n<p>For now, country music owns a piece of Hot 100 history it had never claimed before.\u00a0 And Langley has another piece in her sight: Carey\u2019s 22-week No. 1 record.<\/p>\n<p>Whether she gets there before Christmas music inevitably comes calling is another chart story entirely.<\/p>\n<p>And you know DJROBBLOG
