I mentioned in the previous post about unearthing a
\n\u201ctreasure trove\u201d <\/i><\/b>of pub and brewery-related material, which I was sure
\nwould prove of interest to blog readers – once I\u2019d knocked it into some sort of
\nshape. \u00a0<\/span>I added that much these writings
\nwas out of date, and thus no longer relevant to a modern audience, but I\u2019m pleased
\nto report that with a bit of tweaking quite a chunk of these ancient \u201cscriptures\u201d<\/i><\/b>
\ncan still tell a tale, as well as forming a link back to simpler times. A world
\nwithout personal computers (desktops or laptops), digital cameras and the most modern
\ncontrivance of all the mobile phone.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

What I\u2019m about to reveal now is a rather lengthy account of
\na visit I made to Elgood\u2019s Brewery<\/a><\/u><\/b>, a classic, country brewery, deep in the
\nheart of the Cambridgeshire Fens.<\/b> The trip was one of the best and most memorable
\nbrewery visits I’ve been on, as I\u2019m about to impart. First though, a quick look
\nback at the final sentence in the previous paragraph, because back in the pre-digital
\nworld, the taking of spontaneous photos, or indeed of any photos, was quite
\nrare, given the performance around getting one\u2019s snaps developed and printed.
\nConsequently, there aren\u2019t that many photos, or indeed other material to
\nillustrate this post.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

I’d noticed a trip to Elgood’s<\/b> at Wisbech, <\/b>advertised in the
\nCAMRA<\/b> newspaper, \u201cWhat’s Brewing\u201d<\/i><\/b>. It was organised by Maidstone & mid-Kent
\nCAMRA<\/b>, a branch that I\u2019d formerly been a member of. This was before I moved to
\nTonbridge.<\/b>\u00a0 <\/span>I was still in touch with one
\nor two members of the branch, so without further ado I booked my place, paid my
\ndeposit for the mini-bus and waited for the day of the trip to arrive.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

It promised to be a
\nglorious July<\/b> day, as I set off by train from Tonbridge<\/b> to Maidstone.<\/b> The
\nweather, in fact, had been hot for several weeks, and the sun was already
\nbeating down as the train rumbled along the picturesque Medway Valley Line<\/b>
\nbetween the two towns. The river Medway<\/b> itself was looking very attractive as
\nit glinted in the early morning sun, and before long my train was pulling into
\nMaidstone.<\/b> I alighted at the Barracks <\/b>station and walked across high-level Medway Bridge<\/b> towards the rendezvous point for the trip outside Maidstone East<\/b>
\nstation. As I crossed the river I was surprised at some of the changes that had
\ntaken place since I moved away from the town. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Most of my fellow travellers were already waiting when I
\narrived at the pickup point, and after a brief wait the that would transport us
\nto Wisbech<\/b> and back. It turned out I wasn’t the only CAMRA member<\/b> to come from
\na different branch because on the way we stopped to collect members from
\nvarious other CAMRA branches. <\/b>After that we crossed the Thames <\/b>at Dartford
\n<\/b>before joining the M25 <\/b>and M11<\/b> motorways, as we headed towards Cambridgeshire.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

We stopped for a short break at the\u00a0Bishop Stortford<\/b>
\nservices, before continuing our journey, arriving in Wisbech<\/b> with the sun
\nshining out brightly across mile after mile of dead flat Fens<\/b>. Our hired
\ntransport took us into the centre of town and then along the north bank of the
\nriver Nene<\/b>, known locally as the North Brink<\/b>. This is where Elgoods Brewery<\/b> is
\nlocated. This was not my first visit to Wisbech,<\/b> because I\u2019d stopped off in the
\ntown in the spring of 1983,<\/b> whilst on a journey from Suffolk<\/b> to Leeds. <\/b>I\u2019d
\nstopped in Wisbech<\/b> to have a look at Elgoods brewery <\/b>\u2013 externally, and enjoy a
\npint of the brewery\u2019s beer, in one of several pubs tied to the brewery.\u00a0 <\/span>This was the King\u2019s Head,<\/b> in the town\u2019s Old
\nMarket Place.<\/b> My memories of that trip enabled me to direct our driver to the
\nbrewery. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

We were deposited just outside Elgoods<\/b>, but with a couple of
\nhours before commencement of the tour, it was time for some much-needed liquid
\nrefreshment. We walked back along the North Brink<\/b>, where two options presented
\nthemselves. First was the Rose<\/b>, a pleasant free house, whilst a bit further on,
\nwas the Red Lion,<\/b> an Elgoods <\/b>tied house. Both pubs were listed in the Good Beer
\nGuide<\/b>, at the time, but I opted for the latter, as after all, we were there to
\nenjoy the products of the local brewery. I made a good choice, and after a long
\nand hot journey up from Kent,<\/b> that first pint of the Cambridge Bitter<\/b> hardly
\ntouched the sides! Whilst at the pub, we pumped into the\u00a0Elgoods’ Head Brewer, <\/b>and
\nhis assistant who were enjoying a spot of lunch. We introduced ourselves and
\nmentioned that we were due to visit the brewery, later on.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

We made our way back towards Elgoods,<\/b> calling in briefly at
\nthe Rose<\/b>, on the way. We met up there we met up with the other members of our group
\nand found an excellent range of beers on sale. These included Cains F.A.<\/b> plus the
\nwell-hopped, straw-coloured Geoffrey Hudson Bitter,<\/b> from Oakham Brewery.<\/b> That definitely
\nwas find of the day, as far as I was concerned, but stay tuned, as there\u2019s more
