You\u2019re analyzing my life, proposing ideas, and then <strong>you are pushing the buttons<\/strong> to enact these changes. I, the client, don\u2019t want to push the buttons.\u201d <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cJesse \u2013 I\u2019m only asking you for ideas. You\u2019re analyzing and proposing, sure. But then <strong>I, the client, will choose what advice to accept, and I\u2019ll push those buttons if and when I choose to.<\/strong>\u201d <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It\u2019s like flying. <\/p>\n<p>Bucket 1 wants me to be their pilot. They\u2019re the passenger. Clean separation. You relax in your seat and read your book. I\u2019m the expert, but they\u2019re flying the plane. They could misunderstand me \u2013 or ignore me \u2013 and do something dangerous, dumb, etc. <\/p>\n<p>I have a clean personal preference \u2013 <strong>I want to be the pilot.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are important and simple reasons why:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>I want my advice to be implemented.<\/strong> If I\u2019m the pilot, then my advice gets implemented every time. But if I\u2019m just the instructor, then perhaps you forget to implement my advice. Or you delay. Or you choose not to implement it at all. All problematic. <\/li>\n<li><strong>You\u2019ll make mistakes. <\/strong>I\u2019ve seen too many overconfident DIYers make startlingly bad mistakes. Here\u2019s an example that a \u201cflight instructor\u201d advisor recently shared in an industry forum:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I recently saw this story from another advisor on an industry forum. <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large has-custom-border\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"104\" src=\"https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-12-at-8.05.57-AM-1024x104.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-64962\" style=\"border-width:4px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-12-at-8.05.57-AM-1024x104.png 1024w, https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-12-at-8.05.57-AM-300x30.png 300w, https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-12-at-8.05.57-AM-768x78.png 768w, https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-12-at-8.05.57-AM.png 1340w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The client intended to do a $300,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/the-roth-conversion-checklist-ama-e145\/id1553180943?i=1000775904289\">Roth conversion<\/a> but instead did a $3.5M Roth conversion. The advisor made the recommendation (\u201cconvert $300K\u201d), but the client pushed the (<em>wrong<\/em>) buttons ($3.5M).<\/p>\n<p>I would estimate this was a <strong>$400,000 \u2013 $600,000 mistake. <\/strong>The client converted $3.2M too much, at total tax rates 12-20% more than intended. <\/p>\n<p>Obviously, I am cherry-picking an example. Plenty of people DIY their finances every day without making mistakes. I chose a startling story. <\/p>\n<p>But the fact remains \u2013 I believe more can (and does) go wrong during \u201cflight instructor\u201d financial advice relationships. <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"867\" height=\"1300\" src=\"https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/pexels-photo-6474308.jpeg\" alt=\"a man in white shirt painting a house\" class=\"wp-image-64978\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.6669177153655498;width:222px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/pexels-photo-6474308.jpeg 867w, https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/pexels-photo-6474308-200x300.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/pexels-photo-6474308-683x1024.jpeg 683w, https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/pexels-photo-6474308-768x1152.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 867px) 100vw, 867px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>There\u2019s a similar saying in the trades. <strong><em>\u201cI can do the job for $20,000. If you want to help, it\u2019s $30,000.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> Because when a homeowner wants to \u201cpitch in,\u201d it\u2019ll mean that the professional needs to: <\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fix mistakes made by well-meaning amateurs.<\/li>\n<li>Stop and explain things instead of just doing them.<\/li>\n<li>Wait on the client\u2019s schedule instead of working straight through.<\/li>\n<li>Manage the client\u2019s opinions\/change requests along the way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s a darn close analogy to financial planning.<\/p>\n<p>I love my work, and I\u2019m happy to show my clients \u201caround the cockpit,\u201d as it were. I\u2019ll give away free wings all day. So the metaphors here aren\u2019t perfect. I enjoy the explaining and the educating. I want my clients to understand my reasoning.
