In a\u00a0Reuters\u00a0item datelined\u00a0Farnborough, England (July 21, 2026), Airbus said it was\u00a0\u201cpushing for more engines from Pratt & Whitney for 2027\u201d\u00a0after what it described as a\u00a0tug of war with airlines over supplies, and added that it hoped to receive more engines from\u00a0CFM as well while noting CFM was already meeting agreed quantities.<\/p>\n

Why is this crucial?<\/h2>\n

Airbus Commercial Aircraft CEO\u00a0Lars Wagner\u00a0told reporters he expects the \u201cprotracted\u201d engine-supply problems to be\u00a0resolved by 2028, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n

Airbus\u2019 A320neo <\/a>family jets are sold with an engine choice of either the CFM LEAP or the\u00a0Pratt & Whitney GTF (geared turbofan). When either supplier falls short, Airbus can\u2019t simply ship completed aircraft without engines, so the shortage shows up immediately as delayed deliveries, slower ramp-up, and (often) a growing pool of \u201cgliders\u201d or late-stage aircraft waiting on power plants.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t a new friction point. In Airbus\u2019\u00a0Annual Press Conference 2026\u00a0materials, CEO\u00a0Guillaume Faury\u00a0said\u00a0Pratt & Whitney\u2019s failure to commit to the number of engines ordered by Airbus\u00a0was already\u00a0negatively impacting guidance\u00a0and the ramp-up trajectory, and he explicitly pointed to\u00a02027 engine volumes as a key focus to get \u201cback on track\u201d.<\/p>\n

That timing aligns with Airbus\u2019 own industrial target; the company has been working toward a production capability of 75 A320-family aircraft per month in 2027, a level that requires synchronised deliveries of structures, systems and most importantly, engines.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s driving the \u201ctug of war\u201d over engines<\/h2>\n

Airbus is pressing Pratt & Whitney to deliver\u00a0more jet engines in 2027, underscoring how engine availability rather than airline demand is still one of the biggest limiting factors on near-term single-aisle growth.<\/p>\n

The Reuters wording (\u201ctug of war with airlines\u201d) points to a real-world allocation problem that\u2019s easy to miss from outside the industry. Airbus needs engines to hit factory output and delivery targets. Airlines also need engines, especially spare engines, to keep their own fleets flying when shop visits spike, parts are scarce, or inspection programmes pull engines off-wing for longer than planned. If total engine supply is tight, deciding whether an engine goes to a\u00a0new delivery\u00a0or to support\u00a0in-service reliability\u00a0becomes a zero-sum trade.<\/p>\n

Pratt & Whitney has also been navigating significant MRO disruption in recent years. In a separate Reuters report from Farnborough, Pratt & Whitney said maintenance disruption that had grounded hundreds of aircraft was easing and that the number of grounded aircraft was down 40% from a peak (and had \u201cvirtually disappeared\u201d for the smaller A220 and Embraer E2 fleets).<\/p>\n
