Alikeen – backstage at Killer Fridays in Byron

I produced events for a few years and absolutely loved it.

I also worked 9-5 for much of my life and wanted to follow my heart and make a career out of event management.

How a Diploma at CoEM Transformed Alikeen’s Career…and Confidence

Alikeen’s nine to five job paid the bills but didn’t fill her creative cup. She started producing her own community events with a focus on music, performance, expression and community. These events gave her a taste of what a career in events might feel like. One day Alikeen decided to follow her heart and take the plunge to study a Diploma of Event Management. Her intent? To gain a formal knowledge base and a whole lot of confidence to take her love of events to the next level.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you’re currently doing.

I’m Alikeen, 32, based in Melbourne. I currently work casually in events for two companies, mainly focusing on weddings as an event manager, supporting couples on their big day.

What compelled you to take the Diploma at College of Event Management?

After returning from living overseas, I started considering the idea of studying a Diploma of Event Management. Following extensive research and a phone call with the CoEM team, where they outlined the coursework, I decided to enrol.

The most valuable thing you learnt through the Diploma?

The most valuable lesson I learned was to believe in myself. The course provided me with a wealth of knowledge, which I now strive to implement in every event I manage.

Who were you before doing the Diploma, and who are you now?

Before the Diploma, I wasn’t as involved in events nearly as much I wanted to be. Now, having completed the Diploma, I am more confident and actively striving towards my goals in the event industry.

Proudest achievement in events to date?

My proudest achievement was producing the only Queer event in the Byron Shire for two and a half years. I look forward to creating more inclusive events in the future, using the knowledge I gained from CoEM.

Advice for anyone considering doing the Diploma?

I highly recommend College of Event Management. The learning facilitators are incredibly knowledgeable and supportive. The coursework is a great mix of individual and group projects, covering all aspects of event management from brainstorming ideas to marketing and operations. I loved my time at CoEM and would do it again in a heartbeat!
