Choco Taco

Few discontinued foods have sparked as much outrage as the Choco Taco.

If you never had one, imagine someone combining three desserts into one glorious creation.

It started with a taco-shaped waffle cone shell, added vanilla ice cream, coated the top in chocolate, and finished it off with crunchy peanuts.

It somehow managed to taste like an ice cream cone, a sundae, and a candy bar all at once.

You’d often find them at amusement parks, pools, convenience stores, and ice cream trucks.

Then, in 2022, Klondike announced it was discontinuing the beloved treat.

Fans immediately flooded social media with complaints, petitions, and desperate pleas to bring it back.

The backlash became so intense that Klondike eventually hinted the Choco Taco could return someday.

Unfortunately, we’re all still waiting.

2. Hi-C Ecto Cooler

If you grew up in the late ’80s or ’90s, there’s a good chance this bright green drink was part of your lunchbox.

Originally released as a promotion for Ghostbusters, Hi-C Ecto Cooler somehow became even more popular than the movie tie-in itself.

Kids loved the electric green color almost as much as the citrus flavor.

Parents…maybe not so much.

Even after the Ghostbusters promotion ended, demand stayed high enough that Coca-Cola kept producing it for years.

When it finally disappeared, fans never really stopped talking about it.

Hi-C briefly brought Ecto Cooler back for the 2016 Ghostbusters movie, but it disappeared once again shortly afterward.

For many people, opening one of those little juice boxes instantly brings back memories of elementary school lunches and Saturday morning cartoons.

3. Butterfinger BB’s

Before bite-sized candy became trendy, Butterfinger BB’s were already doing it.

Instead of wrestling with a full-size Butterfinger bar, you could pop these crunchy little chocolate-covered balls into your mouth one at a time.

That was also the problem.

It was almost impossible to stop after just a few.

Butterfinger eventually replaced them with Butterfinger Bites, but longtime fans insist they aren’t nearly the same.

Whether it’s the recipe, the texture, or simply nostalgia talking, BB’s remain one of the most requested discontinued candies on the internet.

Sometimes smaller really was better.

4. Crystal Pepsi

The early 1990s were full of strange marketing experiments.

Crystal Pepsi might have been the strangest.

Imagine drinking what looked like water…only to discover it tasted exactly like Pepsi.

Consumers couldn’t decide whether it was brilliant or incredibly confusing.

While the novelty helped it sell well at first, the excitement wore off surprisingly quickly.

Crystal Pepsi disappeared almost as fast as it arrived.

Pepsi has brought it back for limited promotions several times over the years, and every time the internet reacts exactly the same way.

People rush to buy it.

Post nostalgic photos online.

Then wonder why it disappeared again.

5. Surge

If Mountain Dew and pure caffeine had a child, it would probably be Surge.

Released by Coca-Cola in the late 1990s, Surge was bright green, aggressively marketed, and packed with enough citrus flavor to wake up an entire classroom.

Teenagers loved it.

Parents…not nearly as much.

As energy drinks became more popular, Surge slowly disappeared from store shelves.

What makes this story unique is that fans refused to let it die.

For years, dedicated supporters campaigned online for Coca-Cola to bring it back.

Eventually, the company listened.

While Surge returned in limited quantities, many fans still miss the days when it seemed to be everywhere.

6. Jell-O Pudding Pops

Frozen desserts have come and gone over the years, but few inspired as much loyalty as Jell-O Pudding Pops.

Unlike ordinary popsicles, they were creamy, rich, and somehow tasted exactly like frozen chocolate pudding.

Eating one on a hot summer afternoon became a tradition for countless families.

Unfortunately, manufacturing problems and changing business priorities eventually led to their disappearance.

Sure, you can freeze pudding in molds at home.

People have been trying to recreate them for decades.

Almost everyone agrees it isn’t the same.

Sometimes nostalgia really does taste better.

7. Altoids Tangerine Sours

Altoids built its reputation on strong mints.

Then someone had the brilliant idea of making sour candy instead.

The result?

One of the most beloved candies of the early 2000s.

Tangerine was arguably the standout flavor, although raspberry and mango had plenty of fans too.

Instead of overwhelming sweetness, Altoids Sours balanced sharp citrus flavors with just enough sweetness to keep you reaching for another tin.

Unfortunately, low sales eventually convinced the company to discontinue the line.

Ironically, demand exploded after they disappeared.

Today, unopened tins regularly sell online for shocking prices, and countless copycat recipes have appeared as fans try to recreate the original experience.

For many people, no substitute has ever come close.

8. SqueezeIts

Before sports drinks came in squeeze pouches, there was SqueezeIts.

The colorful plastic bottles looked like little characters, and drinking them was half the fun.

You didn’t sip them.

You squeezed them.

Every lunchbox seemed to have one.

The flavors were ridiculously sweet, the bottles were impossible not to play with, and somehow every kid believed squeezing the bottle made the drink taste better.

Eventually changing consumer tastes and healthier beverage options pushed SqueezeIts off store shelves.

But ask anyone who grew up in the ’90s about them, and chances are they’ll smile before they even answer.

9. McDonald’s Fried Apple Pies

Today’s baked apple pies from McDonald’s are perfectly fine.

But anyone old enough to remember the originals knows they aren’t the same.

The old pies were deep fried.

The crust was crisp and flaky.

The filling was dangerously hot.

In fact, biting into one too quickly almost guaranteed you’d burn the roof of your mouth.

It became part of the experience.

McDonald’s eventually switched to baked pies as consumers became more health conscious.

Healthier? Probably.

As delicious? Most fans would say absolutely not.

Sometimes unhealthy foods become unforgettable precisely because they weren’t trying to be healthy.

10. Nintendo Power Magazine

Long before YouTube walkthroughs, Reddit forums, and gaming websites, Nintendo Power was the ultimate strategy guide.

Every new issue was packed with game previews, cheat codes, maps, reviews, artwork, and secrets that felt impossible to discover on your own.

Kids would read each issue cover to cover while waiting for the next big Nintendo release.

Many even kept stacks of old magazines in their bedrooms because throwing them away felt almost criminal.

When Nintendo ended publication in 2012, it marked the end of an era.

Sure, you can find every game guide imaginable online now.

But there’s something special about flipping through glossy pages while circling cheat codes with a pen that the internet simply can’t replace.

11. Toys “R” Us

Walking into Toys “R” Us as a kid felt like stepping into another world.

The towering aisles seemed endless, packed floor to ceiling with action figures, bikes, board games, LEGO sets, dolls, video games, and every toy you’d been circling in catalogs for months.

The best part wasn’t necessarily buying something.

It was wandering the store imagining what you’d buy if money were no object.

For many kids, a trip to Toys “R” Us before a birthday or Christmas became a family tradition.

While the brand has made a few attempts at a comeback, most people miss the original giant stores where you could spend an hour exploring every aisle.

Online shopping may be more convenient, but it will never recreate that feeling of racing through automatic doors knowing you were surrounded by every toy imaginable.

12. The Sears Wish Book

Long before kids built Amazon wish lists, there was the Sears Wish Book.

Every holiday season, families eagerly waited for the giant catalog to arrive in the mail.

Kids would flip through hundreds of pages, circling toys with markers, folding page corners, and creating impossible Christmas lists.

Parents secretly used those same pages to figure out what would end up under the tree.

For many families, reading the Wish Book together officially marked the beginning of the holiday season.

Today’s online shopping is undoubtedly faster.

But endlessly scrolling a website just doesn’t carry the same magic as sitting on the living room floor with a massive catalog and dreaming about Christmas morning.

13. AOL Instant Messenger (AIM)

Before texting became the default way to communicate, there was AIM.

Logging on after school was practically a daily ritual.

The familiar sound of the door opening when a friend signed in became instantly recognizable.

So did the disappointment when your crush wasn’t online.

People spent hours customizing away messages, choosing the perfect profile quote, and waiting for someone to message first.

Sometimes conversations lasted all evening.

Sometimes everyone just sat there watching buddy lists change from gray to green.

Social media eventually replaced AIM, but many people still remember it as one of the most exciting parts of growing up online.

It was simpler.

Slower.

And somehow felt more personal than today’s endless stream of notifications.

14. Orbitz

No, not Orbitz the travel website.

We’re talking about the drink with floating edible balls suspended inside the bottle.

When Orbitz hit store shelves in the late 1990s, people couldn’t decide whether it was a beverage, a science experiment, or some kind of alien life form.

The fruit-flavored drink wasn’t necessarily famous because it tasted amazing.

People bought it because they’d never seen anything like it.

The tiny gelatin spheres floated throughout the bottle, making every sip feel different.

Unfortunately, the novelty wore off fairly quickly, and Orbitz disappeared almost as quickly as it arrived.

Still, it’s remembered as one of the strangest—and most unforgettable—products of the decade.

15. Skip-It

Before smartphones entertained kids for hours, simple toys ruled the neighborhood.

One of the most memorable was Skip-It.

The concept couldn’t have been simpler.

You strapped a plastic ring around your ankle, swung the weighted ball in a circle, and jumped over it over and over again.

That was it.

But somehow kids could spend entire afternoons trying to beat their personal records.

Some versions even included a built-in counter that tracked your skips, turning every recess or driveway into an unofficial competition.

It was exercise disguised as fun—a combination that’s surprisingly hard to pull off.

Today’s kids have endless entertainment options.

Yet many adults still smile when they hear the words “Skip-It.”

16. McDonald’s PlayPlaces

Modern McDonald’s restaurants tend to be sleek, quiet, and full of self-service kiosks.

The PlayPlaces of the 1980s and 1990s were the exact opposite.

They were loud. Colorful. Chaotic.

Kids climbed through giant plastic tunnels, raced down slides, disappeared into ball pits, and somehow burned off enough energy that parents could actually enjoy eating for a few minutes.

Birthday parties at McDonald’s felt like major events.

The smell of French fries mixed with the sound of laughing children became part of the experience.

Today’s PlayPlaces are much smaller—or gone entirely at many locations.

For parents, they’re probably cleaner.

For kids who grew up with the originals, they’ll never be as memorable.

17. Original Easy-Bake Oven Mixes

The Easy-Bake Oven is still around.

But longtime fans argue that the original baking mixes were far better.

Kids weren’t just pretending to cook.

They were making tiny cakes, brownies, cookies, and pizzas that actually felt like real food.

The excitement came from creating something yourself—even if the finished product was only a few bites.

Over the years, recipes changed, ingredients changed, and many people insist the newer mixes simply don’t taste the same.

Whether that’s nostalgia or reality is up for debate.

But for countless kids, baking miniature desserts under a tiny light bulb remains one of childhood’s most unforgettable experiences.

18. Blockbuster Video

Friday nights used to involve an important family decision.

Which movie should we rent?

A trip to Blockbuster wasn’t simply about getting a movie.

It was an event.

Families wandered the aisles looking at new releases, argued over comedies versus action movies, grabbed popcorn and candy near the checkout counter, and hoped someone hadn’t already rented the movie they wanted.

If they had, you picked something else.

Streaming has unquestionably made watching movies easier.

But it also eliminated the excitement of physically browsing shelves and discovering a movie you’d never planned to watch.

Sometimes convenience comes at the expense of experience.

19. McDonald’s Dollar Menu

Fast food used to feel…well…cheap.

Walking into McDonald’s with five dollars often meant you could buy an entire meal and still have money left over.

The original Dollar Menu became legendary because it actually lived up to its name.

Need a quick snack?

One dollar.

Hungry after school?

A few dollars solved the problem.

While value menus still exist today, inflation has pushed many of those familiar one-dollar items well beyond their original price.

It’s a reminder that sometimes what people miss isn’t just the food.

It’s what that food used to cost.

20. Butterfinger Before the Recipe Changed

Technically, Butterfinger still exists.

But ask longtime fans, and many will tell you the original tasted better.

When Ferrero purchased the brand, the recipe was updated with new ingredients and packaging designed to appeal to modern consumers.

Some people welcomed the changes.

Others immediately noticed differences in the chocolate, the peanut-buttery center, and the candy’s signature flaky crunch.

Whether the new version is objectively better is almost beside the point.

For many people, the original Butterfinger is tied to childhood Halloween candy, movie theater trips, and convenience store stops after school.

Sometimes changing a recipe means changing the memories attached to it.

Why We Miss These Products So Much

It’s easy to assume people simply miss old snacks, toys, and stores.

But that’s usually not what nostalgia is really about.

Most of these products remind us of a different time in life.

Family movie nights. Summer vacations. Saturday mornings. Christmas shopping with our parents. Playing outside until the streetlights came on.

The products became part of the memories.

That’s why companies occasionally bring back discontinued favorites for a limited time.

They aren’t just selling candy or soda.

They’re selling a chance to relive a small piece of childhood.

And judging by how quickly many of these products sell out whenever they return, it’s clear that some memories never really disappear.

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS.
