Running a home-based business as a mom means doing many things at once. You prepare meals, take care of your family, answer customer messages, pack orders, and still find time to grow your business. It can be busy, but it’s also very rewarding. In the Philippines, we also have to deal with typhoons, floods, and sudden power outages. These situations don’t just affect our daily routine. They can also affect our business. Supplies may get damaged, deliveries may be delayed, and it may become difficult to communicate with customers. For many mompreneurs, this also means losing income.

The good news is that preparing your business for emergencies doesn’t have to be difficult. Small steps can help protect your business, reduce stress during unexpected situations, and make it easier to recover after a disaster. Here are a few simple ways to get started.

How Disaster-Proofing Your Business Helps Mompreneurs Thrive Through Every Challenge

Protect Your Supplies

Your supplies are an important part of your business. If you sell food, power outages can spoil your ingredients. Floods can also damage your products, packaging, and other materials. Store your supplies on high shelves or inside waterproof containers whenever possible. If you sell frozen or chilled products, keep frozen ice packs ready to help keep them cold during short power outages.

Be Ready for Delivery Delays

Bad weather can stop courier services and delay deliveries. Customers are usually more understanding when they know what’s happening. Before a storm arrives, let your customers know that deliveries may take longer than expected. You can also save a ready-made message on your phone so you can quickly send updates. If you have more than one courier partner, keep their contact details ready. Most importantly, never schedule deliveries when it is not safe to travel.

Keep Your Business Records Safe

Many mompreneurs use their phones or laptops to manage orders and payments. If your device gets damaged or online payment services are unavailable, it can be difficult to access important information. Back up your files to a secure cloud storage regularly. It is also helpful to keep a printed or handwritten copy of important customer orders and supplier contact numbers. If possible, save a small emergency fund for your business in case digital payments are not available.

Stay Connected During Emergencies

A reliable internet connection is very important for a home-based business. It helps you receive weather updates, reply to customers, contact suppliers, and process online payments. PLDT Home helps families and mompreneurs stay connected by improving its network, sending service updates, and deploying PLDT At Your Service teams to affected areas when needed. Through free Wi-Fi, charging stations, calls, and customer assistance, these efforts can help mompreneurs reconnect with customers and continue their business after a calamity.

Build a Strong Support System

One thing I have learned as a mompreneur is that you don’t have to do everything alone. Having a supportive community can make a big difference, especially during difficult times. PLDT Home’s Madiskarte Moms PH (MMPH) is an online community where mompreneurs can learn from one another, share ideas, and support each other. Members also share helpful tips, business experiences, and updates during emergencies. Sometimes, advice from another mompreneur who has gone through the same situation can help you prepare for your own challenges.

We cannot stop natural disasters from happening, but we can prepare for them. By making simple plans, protecting your business, staying connected, and joining a supportive community, you can build a stronger business that can recover and continue growing no matter what challenges come your way. If you’re a mompreneur looking for support and inspiration, join PLDT Home’s Madiskarte Moms PH and connect with a community of women who are growing their businesses together.
