In 2024, Google’s new AI rollout decimated countless passionate travel blogs – many of which were mine and my colleagues’ labor of love. It ended a lot of travel bloggers’ passions and livelihoods, and creating a blog around travel ain’t exactly a cheap hobby.

That algorithm change came after many of us had just recovered our blog traffic and business from the pandemic.

Jump to 2026 and Google just redefined the search engine experience, changing it to an AI search engine that curates and extracts popular blog information to provide quick responses to search queries. This further reduced the visibility of independent blogs still hanging in there like mine.

My trust value in Google isn’t completely shot – obviously I’m still posting content- but the difference is that now the veil is completely down and I understand Google better — its pure monopolistic greed.

This is inspiring content creators to move to subscription-based models like Substack, a gated community, where the experiential information and honest opinions are protected from AI scraping. Substack is freemium, unless you want the backstage peek at personal opinions and deep-dives. Substack is basically, Patreon for bloggers (afterall, creators with a gift for the written word have got to survive too) and hell, I might eventually join them too, although… Substack is the landlord of that platform and it’s not the same as owning your own blog site.

This quick overview is to bring you up to speed with what’s been happening and how it affects your once free content and internet experience and this is just the beginning.

And yes, it’s partially about me. Google flights, hotels, tour packages, gear… anything Google recommends to you through a store and you buy, they get a commission kickback.

Furthermore, the top results are almost always ad-sponsored. It’s the browser I use a lot at the moment. Like most privacy browsers, you need to adjust settings for optimal protection, but Brave takes care of a lot on its own. What makes Brave a must download is that it blocks ads and trackers! YES, say goodbye to annoying ads while surfing on the internet. It’s pretty phenomenal.

Note: I’d be so grateful if you watch my YouTube videos with ads on though, it helps me continue what I do in offering free advice! You can turn it off on everything else. haha

Brave also politely asks permission to show its own partner ads on the browser, which you can decline and it makes this aspect obvious vs hidden in Settings.

Although Brave blocks ads, you still need to go through your Settings to turn on the Privacy features you want, as Brave will save your search history, so that when you close the browser and open it again, you’ll see your last tabs. I set my cookies and searches to delete upon Exit.

Brave has an extensive Settings menu and language can feel uncommon because Brave has considered privacy settings you haven’t thought of. It’s worthwhile to go through the Settings after downloading, to familiarize yourself with your new best browsing friend.

Another feature travelers will love is it has two private windows for you to do anonymous price searches. The first is a standard private window which doesn’t allow websites to track your activity. The second window is a private window using Tor. So you actually have access to Tor when you really want it.

I test drove Brave while trip planning for Las Vegas and noticed little to no price increase when I search multiple times. I used the private window with Tor and the Alaska Airlines website did not appear to like it and would not show its site. Thus, I used the simple private window and the Alaska Airlines website was accessible, so clearly Tor does not work with all websites.

Lastly, Brave also offers a free VPN but it requires creating an account. After a month of using it, I noticed Firefox was still tracking and sharing my info with Meta – even though I thought I turned off my history Settings. I still saw ads for products I’d researched on other platforms. I had to dig deeper into my privacy settings, but if you’re willing to walk through your Settings and learn how to customize it for your best privacy experience, Firefox offers solid privacy protections. But you have to familiarize yourself with the Settings.

Firefox has its own version of a Private Window for you to browse incognito, however I assumed it cleared my history upon leaving. There is a clear history button on your browser that looks like an extension app.

A bonus feature Firefox offers is a free VPN (limited to 5GB?) if you sign up for a Firefox account. They’ve mentioned that even VPNs can run ads and sell your personal data ~le sigh~ and theirs does not. However, this could also be a ploy to get you to ultimately invest in their Mozilla VPN which is an add-on paid subscription feature.

Another caveat to switching to the Mozilla family is that they offer Thunderbird, a free email app, similar to Apple Mail or Microsoft Outlook Mail. The email app is very similar to Outlook Mail in interface design but you can tie other email providers to it like your Gmail or Yahoo, etc.. accounts, which is similar to Apple Mail (Apple is another company I’d like to move away from due to privacy issues).

Pros:

• Gives you the option to opt out of data training for AI
• Can opt out of personalized ads
• Offers a free VPN ( requires a Firefox account)
• Works well with bureaucratic websites (unlike Chrome)
• Available for desktop and mobile

Cons:

• Settings menu can feel overwhelming and a couple tweaks to your Privacy settings may not be enough.
• Could be a matter of time before they change their Privacy policies.

Download Firefox

Vivaldi Browser

Vivaldi is a browser I recently looked into and it’s a European powerhouse. They are based in Norway and Iceland and they’ve been around for a long time. . At 700MB, if you’re already squeezing your memory storage, there are lighter browsers mentioned on this list, although it is lighter than Google Chrome.

Pros:

• Built-in ad blocker
• Blocks trackers by default
• Doesn’t save your browsing history (if you set it up that way)
• Offers a free Proton VPN (requires account setup)
• Loads of additional browser features to make efficient research- tiling, tabstacking, workspaces, etc..
• Other features: Webmail, Calendar
• Available for both desktop and mobile

Cons:

• Might not work on some commercial or government sites.
• The app download is the largest of all of the browsers on this list, likely due to the robust features.

Download Vivaldi

My browsing recommendation

1. I use Brave for everyday research, shopping and flight bookings (although I just started testing Vivaldi)
2. Keep Firefox installed for government websites and visa applications; sometimes I forget and use it for research and shopping, but then switch depending upon how serious I am about purchasing something. And there are times I actually don’t mind seeing ads.
3. Use a VPN alongside your browser (Brave and Firefox both offer this but you can also use your own. I have my own!). Although Brave with the New Private Window with Tor almost feels like you’re using a VPN because your location is masked.
4. Clear your cache regularly and make sure your history is always turned OFF.
5. Never sign in to Google or social media while researching prices
6. For all browsers, you should familiarize yourself with the Settings to understand the data they are collecting and how to turn that off.

In the past, I’d search for flights in Chrome, find the perfect fare, and watch it jump within an hour. Now, using Brave with a VPN, I’m seeing more consistent pricing.

I’m still in the process of testing Vivaldi, but I’m in a bit of a crunch with memory storage drive on my computer. Firefox can always be deleted and reinstalled when needed.

Conclusion

This isn’t just about saving money on flights. It’s about reclaiming your digital sovereignty.
When Google controls what you see, how you see it, and how much you pay – based on information they’ve collected without your full consent – you lose the freedom to make authentic choices.

As a traveler and content creator, I seek authenticity. I want real experiences, real recommendations and real connections. That starts with having the freedom to search for truth.

Are you ready to make the switch? Subscribe to my newsletter for updates on this journey.

Last Updated on July 29, 2026 by Christine Kaaloa If you’ve been following tech news lately, you’ve probably seen some concerning headlines: • AI data centers consuming our planet’s drinking water and putting humans out of work• ChatGPT sharing personal chats with government agencies• Google partnering with Palantir to surveil U.S. citizens’ online activities• Google […]

[106852,190285,98804
11454,16107,27245,1531,14374,27638
["post-7026546","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-things-to-know","category-travel-gear-reviews","category-trip-planning","tag-alternatives","tag-browser","tag-ditch","tag-google","tag-privacyfirst","tag-travelers
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.4 -
