For\u00a0nearly six\u00a0decades, the eradication of\u00a0the\u00a0New\u00a0World screwworm\u00a0stood as one of animal agriculture\u2019s greatest success stories. Through scientific innovation, producer stewardship, and collaboration across the livestock community, veterinarians, and government agencies, the United States eliminated one of the industry\u2019s most destructive pests in 1966\u2014protecting millions of animals from the impacts of this\u00a0detrimental\u00a0pest.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0New\u00a0World screwworm (Cochliomyia\u00a0hominivorax) is a parasitic blowfly whose larvae feed on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals. Unlike many fly larvae that\u00a0feed on\u00a0dead tissue, screwworm larvae burrow into healthy flesh, causing painful wounds that can quickly worsen if left untreated.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rather than accepting the pest as inevitable, researchers, veterinarians, livestock producers, and USDA partnered to pursue complete eradication.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Their efforts combined surveillance, producer education, animal inspections, and one groundbreaking scientific innovation: the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT).\u00a0<\/p>\n
