Last year, La Resistencia documented 16 such protests, mostly carried out by single detainees. But this year, the group has already documented 18 hunger strikes involving about 25 individuals at NWPIC, the most recent of which ended July 20.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis year we\u2019ve seen such a skyrocketing of numbers that indicates how much people are willing to put their lives at risk in order to call attention to these conditions that are ultimately life-threatening for people,\u201d Mora-Cheung said. \u201cPeople are not willing to give up so easily or to have their spirits broken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stateline.org\/2026\/05\/29\/migrants-detained-at-ice-facilities-launch-hunger-strikes-to-protest-conditions\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hunger strikes<\/a>\u00a0in ICE jails have also been<a href=\"https:\/\/popularresistance.org\/around-500-people-are-on-hunger-strike-at-five-ice-detention-centers\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0at Adelanto ICE Processing Center in California; North Lake Processing Center in Michigan; Moshannon Valley Processing Center in Pennsylvania; Prairieland Detention Center and Camp East Montana in Texas; Torrance County Detention Facility in New Mexico; the ICE unit at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/prismreports.org\/2026\/04\/06\/immigrants-complain-of-poor-conditions-in-notorious-unit-at-angola-prison\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Louisiana State Penitentiary<\/a>\u00a0or \u201cAngola\u201d; and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/prismreports.org\/2026\/05\/28\/delaney-hall-protests-hunger-strike\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Delaney Hall<\/a>\u00a0in New Jersey.<a href=\"https:\/\/popularresistance.org\/around-500-people-are-on-hunger-strike-at-five-ice-detention-centers\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0About 500<\/a>\u00a0noncitizens have reportedly joined the strikes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advocates say there have likely been more hunger strikes across the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vera.org\/ice-detention-trends\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0425 jails<\/a>\u00a0administered by ICE and its network of private contractors, but the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/news\/local\/delaney-hall-hunger-strike-protests\/6506125\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0agency denies<\/a>\u00a0they are taking place and, according to the advocates, quickly tries to break them up through threats or coercion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ICE did not respond to a request for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2026\/06\/03\/new-jersey-hunger-strikers-allege-abysmal-detention-conditions\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Detainees complain<\/a>\u00a0about<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/press-releases\/2026\/06\/us-turk-alarmed-deaths-ice-custody-calls-urgent-preventive-action\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0inhumane conditions<\/a>\u2014including unsanitary food and water, lack of medical care, widespread physical abuse, and retaliation for filing complaints\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.detentionwatchnetwork.org\/pressroom\/releases\/2026\/hunger-strikes-ice-detention-are-ramping-up-coast-coast\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">along with<\/a>\u00a0racist abuse and a complete absence<a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2026\/06\/1167816\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0of justice<\/a>\u00a0and due process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take<a href=\"https:\/\/popularresistance.org\/around-500-people-are-on-hunger-strike-at-five-ice-detention-centers\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0the case<\/a>\u00a0of Rogelio Boluf\u00e9 Izquierdo, a Cuban national who has gone on multiple hunger strikes, including one that lasted nine days in Torrance. Initially sent to the notorious\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/prismreports.org\/2026\/06\/25\/after-detainees-relocated-from-alligator-alcatraz-environmental-group-presses-forward\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cAlligator Alcatraz\u201d<\/a>\u00a0in Florida, Boluf\u00e9 was transferred nine times in retaliation for his organizing, according to La Resistencia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boluf\u00e9 spoke with Prism over the phone from Guayaquil, Ecuador, where he was deported in June despite having an open asylum case and a pending appeal before an immigration court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He claimed that detainees are denied access to legal counsel at the Torrance ICE jail and very likely at the other jails where he\u2019d been detained. He also claimed that his legal court documents were taken from him and that facilities do not provide mail service, which is the only way detainees can follow their deportation proceedings or request asylum.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was one of the main reasons we went on hunger strike,\u201d Boluf\u00e9 said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe legal proceedings do not follow due process. They are a farce,\u201d he added. \u201cThe Fifth Amendment does not exist in U.S. immigration proceedings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/phr.org\/our-work\/resources\/mutlimedia-behind-closed-doors\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Torturous conditions<\/a>\u00a0in ICE jails have been<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/report\/2026\/07\/15\/youre-only-getting-out-deported-or-dead\/abusive-us-immigration-detention-at-ft\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0well-documented<\/a>\u00a0by advocacy groups over the past two decades. These conditions have not only persisted during the current Trump administration but have worsened, according to advocates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least 52 people<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/report\/2026\/06\/25\/dying-in-detention\/rising-deaths-in-an-expanding-us-immigration-detention-system\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0have died<\/a>\u00a0in ICE custody since President Donald Trump\u2019s inauguration last year.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/report\/2026\/06\/25\/dying-in-detention\/rising-deaths-in-an-expanding-us-immigration-detention-system\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0According to<\/a>\u00a0Human Rights Watch, this mortality rate is nearly four times that of the Biden administration and more than two and a half times that of the first Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the largest documented hunger strike of the year, at Delaney Hall in New Jersey, more than 300 men and women participated in a weekslong labor and hunger strike that ended<a href=\"https:\/\/jerseyvindicator.org\/2026\/06\/25\/delaney-hall-hunger-and-labor-strike-ended-after-weeks-of-protests-and-alleged-retaliation\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0in June<\/a>. They denounced<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/10\/nyregion\/delaney-hall-ice-conditions-unsanitary.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0degrading conditions<\/a>\u00a0and a lack of due process, including arbitrary denials of bond and coercion to sign legal documents that would result in deportation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe see with profound helplessness and frustration that the right to due process &amp; legal counsel were violated, and benefits granted in the 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendments of the U.S. Constitution were unacknowledged,\u201d wrote 25 of the Delaney Hall hunger strikers in a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lahuelga.com\/elgrito\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0public letter<\/a>. The author, identified as Leonardo Villalba, was summarily transferred to another ICE jail, according to the letter\u2019s postscript.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ICE could not simply deny that the massive hunger strike at Delaney Hall was happening, so agents resorted to violence, said Jenny Garc\u00eda, a campaign coordinator at the nonprofit American Friends Service Committee\u2019s New Jersey Immigrant Rights Program. ICE officers cut off the detainees\u2019 external communication, repeatedly threatened to sabotage their cases, and brutally assaulted and pepper-sprayed them, Garc\u00eda said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hunger strikers at Torrance were stripped naked and sent to cold cells, where they were exposed to 24-hour lighting, according to Boluf\u00e9, who spent seven months in that prison. Innovation Law Lab, an immigrant and refugee justice organization, has documented these<a href=\"https:\/\/prismreports.org\/2023\/06\/15\/torture-rampant-ice-facilities\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0cold chambers<\/a>\u00a0at Torrance, calling them<a href=\"https:\/\/innovationlawlab.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2026-02\/2023.02.15-Torrance-Report.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0torture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At some point during his strike, Boluf\u00e9 said he asked himself, \u201cWhy should I go on if it makes no sense? No one will find out.
