President Donald Trump<\/a> continued to claim the United States<\/a> and Iran<\/a> were in active peace talks on Monday, despite denials from Iranian and U.S. officials.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cIranian Leadership is unbelievably duplicitous!\u201d Trump wrote<\/a> on Truth Social<\/a>. \u201cThey ask for a meeting, some would say\u2019 beg,\u2019 talks begin, with more scheduled in the immediate future, and they say, openly and proudly, that they\u2019re not having any discussions, that nothing is being talked about, and they\u2019re only dealing with \u2018Oman.’\u201d<\/p>\n Trump told reporters over the weekend that Iran came to the U.S. hat in hand to avoid further airstrikes. The president said that the Pentagon had planned \u201cthe biggest attack since World War II.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt would have been disastrous for them,\u201d he said. \u201cThey didn\u2019t want us to do it, and frankly, Saudi Arabia didn\u2019t want it either.\u201d<\/p>\n Iranian officials denied any such communication and said they had no planned talks with the U.S. \u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWe currently do not have negotiations with America,\u201d Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei shared, per NBC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n Start your day with essential news from Salon.
