The work of Amadeus Julian Regucera<\/a> (b.1984, He\/They) engages with the embodied and acoustical energy of sound and the erotics of its production through concert music, installation, performance art, and video. Since 2022 he is the music curator at the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Hi, my name is Amadeus Julian Regucera and I am a composer, instrumentalist, and curator from Oakland, California, based in Troy, New York.<\/em> <em>As a composer, I\u2019m drawn to music that speaks with intensity and immediacy, that\u2019s gripping and says something in the most direct way possible about itself and the world it inhabits. As a curator, I\u2019m interested in futurities \u2014 what does the music say, about where we\u2019re headed? And as both a composer and curator, I\u2019m interested in how experimentalism can be an invitation into new worlds of possibility and transformation. In this playlist I\u2019ve created, I tried to articulate these points and I hope you enjoy what I\u2019ve offered.<\/em><\/p>\n<h5 id=\"h-stretchedwoundspeaks-by-elaine-mitchener\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>stretchedwoundspeaks<\/em> by Elaine Mitchener<\/h5>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elainemitchener.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elaine<\/a> sings, it\u2019s like her entire body throbs, her entire essence pulses. I can hear her physical body in physical space when I listen to her music. In this piece, it\u2019s even more haunting when you hear snatches of melody, like the ghost of a song in a house made of flesh. I\u2019ve seen Elaine perform many times now and it\u2019s emotionally arresting every time.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1461539187\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=ff5599\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/track=1884925765\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/elainemitchener.bandcamp.com\/album\/solo-throat\">Solo Throat by Elaine Mitchener<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5 id=\"h-overlevered-by-charmaine-lee\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Overlevered<\/em> by Charmaine Lee<\/h5>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My favorite piece (song?) off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charmainelee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Charmaine\u2019s<\/a> most recent album, <em>Tulpa<\/em>. The way her voice and the electronic sounds\/processing blend on this record, and especially this song, is so timeless, pointing backwards (analog) and forward (post?-digital); it\u2019s alluring and sensual, almost haptic. The pieces of melody among the glitched landscape are playful yet plaintive, it hits all the emotional buttons at once.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2471365406\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=ff5599\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/track=1342265231\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/charmainelee.bandcamp.com\/album\/tulpa\">Tulpa by Charmaine Lee<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5 id=\"h-anxious-a-anxious-b-by-\u0623\u062d\u0645\u062f-ahmed\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Anxious A\/Anxious B<\/em> by \u0623\u062d\u0645\u062f [Ahmed]<\/h5>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I love listening to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahmed.band\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">[Ahmed]\u2019s<\/a> process: translating, transforming, renewing \u2014 it\u2019s thrilling because you\u2019re hearing the energy transmute and twist and turn in real time. Working from pieces by bassist\/composer Ahmed Abdul Malik (and on their most recent album, Thelonious Monk), [Ahmed]\u2019s sense of play is palpable, you can hear the rigor and play come through so joyfully.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 208px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2482304671\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=ff5599\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ahmedquartet.bandcamp.com\/album\/new-jazz-imagination\">New Jazz Imagination by \u0623\u062d\u0645\u062f [Ahmed]<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5 id=\"h-res-sub-rosa-by-sarah-davachi\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Res Sub Rosa<\/em> by Sarah Davachi<\/h5>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sarahdavachi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sarah\u2019s<\/a> music turns intensity inward. I feel not just an attention to the sound and the music itself, but also a kind of secular spiritualism. The way she draws from early religious music and contemporary music sounds new because she wraps it in this punk rock aura, there\u2019s a roughness here that I can\u2019t explain that separates her from other composers doing work in the same vein. The performers are top-notch and play with a directness that makes Sarah\u2019s music feel electric in its subtlety.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=3354886901\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=ff5599\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/track=1262805931\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sarahdavachi.bandcamp.com\/album\/the-head-as-form-d-in-the-crier-s-choir\">The Head As Form\u2019d In The Crier\u2019s Choir by Sarah Davachi<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5 id=\"h-naldjorlak-by-eliane-radigue-performed-by-charles-curtis\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Naldjorlak<\/em> by \u00c9liane Radigue, Performed by Charles Curtis<\/h5>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many ways a definite precursor to Sarah\u2019s music, the recently passed Radigue\u2019s music also attenuates my listening in an intense and immediate way, drawing me in, ever closer. In all its formalist trappings, there\u2019s a DIY attitude to her style that is also so punk. I admire the searching and researching in the music, shifting my perception between the sound itself and the sound within myself \u2026 it\u2019s the closest to the divine that I\u2019ve gotten in music. Within the album\u2019s pop-inflected sound world, she acts as a Dante-esque chanteuse, her voice floating and drifting through dreamlike beats and digital ephemera, always with a hook\u2014however askew \u2014 leading the way into a kaleidoscopic future. <em>Desire <\/em>feels like this: floating but also keeping your head nodding.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Desire\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fJClZj134a0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h5 id=\"h-luna-park-by-georges-aperghis-performed-by-eva-furrer-johanne-saunier-mike-schmidt-and-richard-dubelsky\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Luna Park<\/em> by Georges Aperghis, Performed by Eva Furrer, Johanne Saunier, Mike Schmidt, and Richard Dubelsky<\/h5>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I saw Aperghis\u2019 <em>Luna Park<\/em> back in 2012 and it has stayed with me ever since. Its edges, its sharply articulated episodic form, and its intricately woven tapestry of voice, physical gesture, electronic sounds, acoustic music, video, and incisive dramaturgy around surveillance affect an intense, full-frontal blast. This is experimental music theater at its most powerful.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Georges Aperghis Luna Park 2011\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/biTGIRROgZA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h5 id=\"h-hitam-by-hulubalang\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Hitam<\/em> by HULUBALANG<\/h5>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/hulubalang.hulubalang\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kasimyn<\/a> has been at the forefront of Javanese Futurism with his work with Gabber Modus Operandi, a group that\u2019s just amazing to dance and rock out to. His recent solo work as HULUBALANG is just as intense but abstracted, the violence I hear in the music is refracted, abstracted in a way that permeates instead of assaults (like in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/gabbermodusoperandi\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gabber<\/a>). In <em>Hitam<\/em>, you can still hear traces of the driving rhythm but the overall musical effect is strangely intimate for all its heaviness. \n<\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Hi, my name is Amadeus Julian Regucera and I am a composer, instrumentalist, and curator from Oakland, California, based in Troy, New York.<\/em> <em>As a composer, I\u2019m drawn to music that speaks with intensity and immediacy, that\u2019s gripping and says something in the most direct way possible about itself and the world it inhabits. As a curator, I\u2019m interested in futurities \u2014 what does the music say, about where we\u2019re headed? And as both a composer and curator, I\u2019m interested in how experimentalism can be an invitation into new worlds of possibility and transformation. In this playlist I\u2019ve created, I tried to articulate these points and I hope you enjoy what I\u2019ve offered.<\/em><\/p>\n<h5 id=\"h-stretchedwoundspeaks-by-elaine-mitchener\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>stretchedwoundspeaks<\/em> by Elaine Mitchener<\/h5>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elainemitchener.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elaine<\/a> sings, it\u2019s like her entire body throbs, her entire essence pulses. I can hear her physical body in physical space when I listen to her music. In this piece, it\u2019s even more haunting when you hear snatches of melody, like the ghost of a song in a house made of flesh. I\u2019ve seen Elaine perform many times now and it\u2019s emotionally arresting every time.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1461539187\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=ff5599\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/track=1884925765\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/elainemitchener.bandcamp.com\/album\/solo-throat\">Solo Throat by Elaine Mitchener<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5 id=\"h-overlevered-by-charmaine-lee\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Overlevered<\/em> by Charmaine Lee<\/h5>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My favorite piece (song?) off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charmainelee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Charmaine\u2019s<\/a> most recent album, <em>Tulpa<\/em>. The way her voice and the electronic sounds\/processing blend on this record, and especially this song, is so timeless, pointing backwards (analog) and forward (post?-digital); it\u2019s alluring and sensual, almost haptic. The pieces of melody among the glitched landscape are playful yet plaintive, it hits all the emotional buttons at once.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2471365406\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=ff5599\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/track=1342265231\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/charmainelee.bandcamp.com\/album\/tulpa\">Tulpa by Charmaine Lee<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5 id=\"h-anxious-a-anxious-b-by-\u0623\u062d\u0645\u062f-ahmed\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Anxious A\/Anxious B<\/em> by \u0623\u062d\u0645\u062f [Ahmed]<\/h5>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I love listening to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahmed.band\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">[Ahmed]\u2019s<\/a> process: translating, transforming, renewing \u2014 it\u2019s thrilling because you\u2019re hearing the energy transmute and twist and turn in real time. Working from pieces by bassist\/composer Ahmed Abdul Malik (and on their most recent album, Thelonious Monk), [Ahmed]\u2019s sense of play is palpable, you can hear the rigor and play come through so joyfully.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 208px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2482304671\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=ff5599\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ahmedquartet.bandcamp.com\/album\/new-jazz-imagination\">New Jazz Imagination by \u0623\u062d\u0645\u062f [Ahmed]<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5 id=\"h-res-sub-rosa-by-sarah-davachi\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Res Sub Rosa<\/em> by Sarah Davachi<\/h5>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sarahdavachi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sarah\u2019s<\/a> music turns intensity inward. I feel not just an attention to the sound and the music itself, but also a kind of secular spiritualism. The way she draws from early religious music and contemporary music sounds new because she wraps it in this punk rock aura, there\u2019s a roughness here that I can\u2019t explain that separates her from other composers doing work in the same vein. The performers are top-notch and play with a directness that makes Sarah\u2019s music feel electric in its subtlety.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=3354886901\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=ff5599\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/track=1262805931\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sarahdavachi.bandcamp.com\/album\/the-head-as-form-d-in-the-crier-s-choir\">The Head As Form\u2019d In The Crier\u2019s Choir by Sarah Davachi<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5 id=\"h-naldjorlak-by-eliane-radigue-performed-by-charles-curtis\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Naldjorlak<\/em> by \u00c9liane Radigue, Performed by Charles Curtis<\/h5>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many ways a definite precursor to Sarah\u2019s music, the recently passed Radigue\u2019s music also attenuates my listening in an intense and immediate way, drawing me in, ever closer. In all its formalist trappings, there\u2019s a DIY attitude to her style that is also so punk. I admire the searching and researching in the music, shifting my perception between the sound itself and the sound within myself \u2026 it\u2019s the closest to the divine that I\u2019ve gotten in music. (This link is to an excerpt of <a href=\"https:\/\/music-cms.ucsd.edu\/people\/faculty\/regular_faculty\/charles-curtis\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Charles Curtis\u2019s<\/a> recording of the piece; I recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/saltern.bandcamp.com\/album\/naldjorlak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">getting the full version<\/a> on Bandcamp).<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=958261425\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=ff5599\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/saltern.bandcamp.com\/album\/naldjorlak\">Naldjorlak by \u00c9liane Radigue<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5 id=\"h-desire-by-miho-hatori\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Desire<\/em> by Miho Hatori<\/h5>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I re-discovered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mihohatori\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Miho\u2019s<\/a> music during my first winter in Troy \u2014 this record was the only thing that got me through it. Within the album\u2019s pop-inflected sound world, she acts as a Dante-esque chanteuse, her voice floating and drifting through dreamlike beats and digital ephemera, always with a hook\u2014however askew \u2014 leading the way into a kaleidoscopic future. <em>Desire <\/em>feels like this: floating but also keeping your head nodding.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Desire\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fJClZj134a0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h5 id=\"h-luna-park-by-georges-aperghis-performed-by-eva-furrer-johanne-saunier-mike-schmidt-and-richard-dubelsky\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Luna Park<\/em> by Georges Aperghis, Performed by Eva Furrer, Johanne Saunier, Mike Schmidt, and Richard Dubelsky<\/h5>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I saw Aperghis\u2019 <em>Luna Park<\/em> back in 2012 and it has stayed with me ever since. Its edges, its sharply articulated episodic form, and its intricately woven tapestry of voice, physical gesture, electronic sounds, acoustic music, video, and incisive dramaturgy around surveillance affect an intense, full-frontal blast. This is experimental music theater at its most powerful.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Georges Aperghis Luna Park 2011\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/biTGIRROgZA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h5 id=\"h-hitam-by-hulubalang\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Hitam<\/em> by HULUBALANG<\/h5>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/hulubalang.hulubalang\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kasimyn<\/a> has been at the forefront of Javanese Futurism with his work with Gabber Modus Operandi, a group that\u2019s just amazing to dance and rock out to. His recent solo work as HULUBALANG is just as intense but abstracted, the violence I hear in the music is refracted, abstracted in a way that permeates instead of assaults (like in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/gabbermodusoperandi\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gabber<\/a>). In <em>Hitam<\/em>, you can still hear traces of the driving rhythm but the overall musical effect is strangely intimate for all its heaviness.
