Jeremy Devito<\/a>, a Democrat from Athens<\/a> running for Congress in north Alabama, called Tuesday for Congress to impeach President Donald Trump<\/a> after Trump publicly threatened sweeping military action against Iran infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Devito, a candidate in the 2026 Alabama U.S. House District 5 Election<\/a>, said lawmakers should move to impeach, convict and remove Trump from office following the president\u2019s latest statements about a deadline for Iran and the possibility of \u201ccomplete and total regime change.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump said Tuesday that a deal had to be reached by Tuesday night or the U.S. could carry out attacks that would destroy Iran\u2019s power plants and bridges. He also wrote that \u201ca whole civilization will die tonight\u201d if no agreement is reached.<\/p>\n

Devito said those comments went beyond hard-line foreign policy language and raised the prospect of war. He argued that when a president talks openly about regime change and the destruction of civilian infrastructure, the consequences are not rhetorical but military, diplomatic and human.<\/p>\n

In his statement, Devito said Congress has a constitutional duty to act when a president\u2019s conduct threatens the country\u2019s safety, security and standing. He said lawmakers from both parties should begin impeachment proceedings without delay.<\/p>\n

Congress has the authority to impeach a president in the House and try the case in the Senate. Removal requires a majority vote in the House to approve articles of impeachment and a two-thirds vote in the Senate to convict.<\/p>\n

Devito\u2019s response came as other Democrats in Washington also criticized Trump\u2019s remarks. Congressional Democrats said the president\u2019s language risked escalating conflict, especially as U.S. forces carried out new strikes on military targets on Iran\u2019s Kharg Island, according to a U.S. official cited Tuesday.<\/p>\n

For Alabama readers, the statement places foreign policy and presidential power into an early congressional campaign that is otherwise expected to center largely on domestic issues and representation in Washington. Alabama\u2019s 5th District covers much of north Alabama, and the seat is currently held by Republican Dale Strong<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Devito is one of several Democrats associated with the 2026 race. His campaign said he is running a grassroots effort and is not taking corporate PAC money.<\/p>\n

Candidates for Congress do not have a direct role in impeachment unless they are already serving in the U.S. House, but statements like Devito\u2019s can signal how they would approach presidential power, war-making authority and Congress\u2019s oversight role if elected. In practical terms, his statement puts him on record in favor of using the Constitution\u2019s most severe remedy against a sitting president.<\/p>\n

The 2026 primary for Alabama\u2019s 5th Congressional District is scheduled for May 19, 2026, with the general election set for Nov. 3, 2026. <\/p>\n
