And for many of the Democratic challengers, combating corruption is taking center stage in their campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>In his new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/YeOpP1-_DgA?ref=texassignal.com\">digital ad<\/a>, Attorney General candidate Nathan Johnson is tying the current cyclospora <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/galveston-county\/2026\/07\/27\/558052\/cyclospora-galveston-county-cases-explosive-diarrhea-cyclosporiasis\/?ref=texassignal.com\">outbreak<\/a> to recent DOGE cuts. The Department of Government Efficiency, an initiative launched by the current Trump administration, enacted broad cuts and terminations throughout the federal government. The team monitoring illnesses and parasites like cyclospora at the CDC was <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/post\/213201\/doge-gutted-office-explosive-diarrhea-parasite-response?ref=texassignal.com\">cut<\/a> to just three staffers. Many Texas officials have also <a href=\"https:\/\/texassignal.com\/texas-officials-issue-blame-game-for-screwworm\/\">blamed<\/a> the rapidly escalating screwworm to DOGE cuts to the Department of Agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson\u2019s latest ad also notes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/taylor-farms-cyclospora-outbreak-white-house-investigation\/?ref=texassignal.com\">relationship<\/a> between Taylor Farms and the Trump White House. Inspectors initially traced the cyclospora parasite to shredded lettuce from Taylor Farms, before quickly saying the test was a false positive. The reversal happened right after executives with Taylor Farms visited the White House. In 2025, the company donated over $1 million to a pro-Trump Super PAC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs attorney general I will do my part to restore trust in public government,\u201d says Johnson in his digital ad. \u201cNo political favors, no special treatment, no pay to play. Just honest government in the public interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both Gina Hinojosa and James Talarico, in their campaigns for governor and senator respectively, have also struck a message of combating corruption. As he campaigns throughout Texas, Talarico often refers to Paxton as \u201cthe most corrupt politician in America.\u201d Paxton was impeached by the Texas House for bribery and abuse of office in 2023 but acquitted in the state senate.<\/p>\n<p>In the race to replace Paxton as attorney general, Johnson is facing former state senator Mayes Middleton. His <a href=\"https:\/\/mayesmiddleton.com\/?ref=texassignal.com\">website<\/a> notes his close relationship with Trump in \u201cadvancing the America first agenda.\u201d He also notes his support for DOGE Texas.<\/p>\n<p><em>Early voting in Texas begins Monday, October 20.
