\nshown Christian that the Law can expose sin but cannot cleanse the heart, the
\nInterpreter leads him into another room. There, Christian sees two young
\nchildren seated in chairs. One is called Passion, the other Patience. At first,
\nthere seems little to distinguish them, yet Bunyan is once again using a simple
\nimage to reveal a profound biblical truth.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nis told that Passion can no longer wait for his inheritance. He demands it
\nimmediately. His request is granted, and for a short time he delights in all he
\nhas received. Yet his joy is short-lived. Before long, his riches are gone, and
\nhe is left with nothing but rags and regret.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nhowever, is willing to wait. He refuses to demand what has not yet been given,
\ncontent to receive his inheritance in the proper time.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nBunyan place this lesson before Christian reaches the Cross?<\/span><\/p>\n
\ngoes back to one of the oldest temptations recorded in Scripture. Ever since
\nthe Garden of Eden, mankind has desired to grasp now what God has appointed for
\nlater. Eve saw that the fruit was desirable, and rather than trusting God’s
\nwisdom, she reached out to take what had been forbidden. The immediate seemed
\nmore attractive than faithful obedience.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nanything really changed?<\/span><\/p>\n
\nencourages us to seek immediate satisfaction. We are taught to pursue comfort,
\nsuccess, wealth and happiness now. Patience has become a rare virtue because we
\nhave been conditioned to believe that fulfilment must not be delayed.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nJohn warns believers,<\/span><\/p>\n
\nthe world, the love of the Father is not in him.”<\/span><\/i> <\/span>1 John 2:15 (ESV)<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n
\ncontinues by reminding us that,<\/span><\/p>\n
\ndoes the will of God abides forever.”<\/span><\/i> <\/span>1 John 2:17 (ESV)<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n
\nexactly what Bunyan is showing us?<\/span><\/p>\n
\nlives for what is temporary. Patience lives in light of eternity.<\/span><\/p>\n
\ncontrast is not merely between two personalities. It is between two kingdoms,
\ntwo hopes and two treasures. One seeks satisfaction in the present world, while
\nthe other waits in faith for what God has promised.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nspoke in similar terms when He said,<\/span><\/p>\n
\nrust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves
\ntreasures in heaven…”<\/span><\/i> <\/span>Matthew 6:19\u201320 (ESV)<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n
\nlesson remains as relevant today as it was in his own generation. Every day we
\nare encouraged to value the immediate over the eternal. Yet Scripture
\ncontinually calls God’s people to look beyond the passing pleasures of this
\nworld and to fix their hope on the inheritance that can never perish.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nthat is why the Interpreter shows Christian these two children so early in his
\npilgrimage. Before he encounters the attractions of Vanity Fair, the hardships
\nof the journey, and the many temptations to abandon the narrow way, Bunyan
\nteaches him to distinguish between what is transient and what is enduring.<\/span><\/p>\n
\nstudy, the Interpreter leads Christian to another striking scene. This time he
\nsees a fire burning against a wall, while someone continually pours water on it
\nin an attempt to extinguish it. It is another lesson that reminds us where the
\nbeliever’s confidence truly rests.<\/span><\/p>\n
