But a job scooping ice cream may be just the beginning of teenagers\u2019 struggles with the job market; the outdated secondary education system in the United States is leaving students behind and setting them up for failure after graduation. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"title-large mb-4\">Falling Behind in More Ways Than One<\/h2>\n<p class=\"body-xl mb-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">The statistics on American education are bleak. Reading and math scores are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/09\/us\/student-testing-scores-drop-hnk\" class=\"text-(--primary-500) hover:underline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lowest they\u2019ve been in 20 years<\/a> as post-COVID-19 effects continue to reverberate. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/leadership\/schools-made-steady-progress-boosting-attendance-with-this-strategy-change\/2026\/03\" class=\"text-(--primary-500) hover:underline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chronic absenteeism<\/a> continues to plague student success, despite improvements in some districts. And the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highereddive.com\/news\/high-schoolers-dont-feel-prepared-for-post-graduation\/751246\/\" class=\"text-(--primary-500) hover:underline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">majority of high schoolers<\/a> say they feel unprepared for life after graduation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-xl mb-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Although conversations about student success often devolve into political games and finger-pointing, the fundamental challenge for high schools isn\u2019t a lack of caring educators or committed communities. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-xl mb-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">The biggest challenge is that students simply don\u2019t see the point in what they\u2019re learning. In an age where every answer to every test is available in an instant, school begins to feel abstract, performative and detached from adulthood, rather than a pathway into it.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"title-large mb-4\">Filling the Skills Gap of the Modern Economy<\/h2>\n<p class=\"body-xl mb-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">The rapidly changing nature of entry-level work has exposed the weakness of the traditional education model, which sets students on one of two paths: toward college or not. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-xl mb-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">But today, it\u2019s not one future that students need to be prepared for; it\u2019s all of them. Career paths are more fluid, and the modern economy increasingly rewards adaptability over routine, skills over seat time and applied learning over passive credit accumulation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-xl mb-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">What this means for high schools is that the demands of education need to change \u2014 to focus on exposure and engagement rather than just college preparedness. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-xl mb-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Colorado has identified these demands as \u201cThe Big Three\u201d and is working to ensure that school districts provide opportunities to earn college credit and industry-recognized credentials and engage in meaningful work-based learning that is connected to a broader career pathway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-xl mb-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">In addition to helping students identify or rule out potential career paths, meaningful work-based learning helps students connect classroom learning to adult goals. Algebra becomes less abstract when it\u2019s tied to engineering, construction estimating, advanced manufacturing or healthcare analytics. Communication skills can be practiced in realistic settings with supervisors, clients or patients. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-xl mb-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">School stops feeling like preparation for another level of school and starts feeling connected to life itself. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-xl mb-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">In many communities, <a href=\"https:\/\/careertech.org\/blog\/research-round-up-impact-of-career-connected-learning-on-learner-engagement-and-hope\/\" class=\"text-(--primary-500) hover:underline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">educators report stronger engagement<\/a>, improved attendance and greater persistence among students who participate in career-connected pathways \u2014 not because the work is easier but because it feels consequential.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-xl mb-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Employers see another benefit. Durable skills \u2014 such as collaboration, reliability, initiative, communication, judgment and problem solving \u2014 are difficult to teach through worksheets alone. But they are the skills that matter in the workplace and determine long-term success. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-xl mb-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">As artificial intelligence plays a larger role in the workplace, these durable skills become what determines whether someone gets hired, promoted or eventually let go. Entry-level jobs (including those summer jobs) are increasingly being eliminated, meaning the opportunity for young people to learn these skills on the job is vanishing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-xl mb-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">By integrating these lessons into their curriculum, schools can help the labor market fill the growing gap for workers with the prerequisite skills, despite the lack of entry-level jobs. Students get to learn and develop these skills in real-world situations, and they gain something increasingly essential in today\u2019s labor market: social capital. Students can graduate with networks, exposure, and insights that have historically taken years to unlock.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"title-large mb-4\">Learning From Real Examples<\/h2>\n<p class=\"body-xl mb-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">States have started to move toward more holistic, real world-focused learning frameworks. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/americasucceeds.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Beyond-the-Portrait.pdf\" class=\"text-(--primary-500) hover:underline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one analysis<\/a>, 39 states have adopted some sort of curriculum focused on helping students connect their coursework with their career goals; seven states have made durable skills a part of their graduation requirements; and 25 states clearly distinguish between attending college and pursuing a trade as legitimate postgraduation paths. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-xl mb-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">What unites the states that have done this effectively \u2014 such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/content\/dam\/tn\/education\/futureready-tn\/AC_FRTN_4PillarsBooklet2025_Spread.pdf\" class=\"text-(--primary-500) hover:underline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tennessee<\/a> and Colorado, for example \u2014 is the willingness of school leadership to collaborate with businesses and workplaces to understand their job demands. In these states, high school students can earn transferable college credit while participating in apprenticeships, internships and career-connected learning, and schools are not financially penalized for not meeting rigid seat-time requirements. Instead of locking students into just one future or just one measure of success, high schools must focus on preparing students for all of it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-xl mb-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">When educators, employers, colleges and state leaders work together, high school education can be more than a checked box; it can support students in a way that feels vital and important to the rest of their lives. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-xl mb-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">America needs a new approach to preparing students for life after high school. Not one based on sorting students into winners and losers or college-bound and career-bound but one focused on helping every young person discover purpose, build skills and gain momentum toward a meaningful future. The strongest high schools of the next generation will not simply prepare students for tests or graduation.
