{"id":7024709,"date":"2026-08-03T11:14:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T11:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/uncategorized\/longbox-junk-longbox-junk-punisher-war-zone-part-three-issues-21\/"},"modified":"2026-08-03T11:14:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T11:14:13","slug":"longbox-junk-longbox-junk-punisher-war-zone-part-three-issues-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=7024709","title":{"rendered":"Longbox Junk!: Longbox Junk &#8211; Punisher: War Zone Part Three (Issues 21"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"post-body-5561999574902865029\" itemprop=\"description articleBody\">\n<p>\u00a0Welcome to Longbox Junk, the place to find all the comic reviews you never asked for!<\/p>\n<p>Here we are at Part Three of my dive into every issue of the black sheep of the three 90s Punisher ongoing series, War Zone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Where the main Punisher title and Punisher: War Journal have some &#8220;Key&#8221; issues and are still collected and discussed, War Zone seems to pretty much live in the bargain bin.\u00a0 You can find even the first issue for a buck or two.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a good thing for Longbox Junkers and bargain bin spelunkers like myself, but seems a bit strange, because Punisher was HUGE in the 90s.\u00a0 So I decided to check it out and see what gives.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to take a look at the previous entries in this series review, here are the links:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/longboxjunk.blogspot.com\/2026\/03\/longbox-junk-punisher-war-zone-part-one.html\" target=\"_blank\">PART ONE (Issues 1 &#8211; 10)<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/longboxjunk.blogspot.com\/2026\/04\/longbox-junk-punisher-war-zone-part-2.html\" target=\"_blank\">PART TWO (Issues 11 &#8211; 20 + Annual 1)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>So far, War Zone has been a pretty good read.\u00a0 Not great, but pretty good.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s been a rotating roster of creative teams that I THINK might be one of the reasons this series never really gained a solid footing (and that creative team merry-go-round continues in this batch as well).\u00a0 There hasn&#8217;t been a single vision or direction for this series so far.\u00a0 Not to say it&#8217;s BAD, because it isn&#8217;t.\u00a0 But that lack of direction leaves this series at being just pretty good.\u00a0 Pretty good isn&#8217;t what makes a comic series memorable.<\/p>\n<p>That said, we&#8217;re only halfway through, so let&#8217;s see what happens next in War Zone!<\/p>\n<p>Ready? text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEivzVJ9-LOxHNBuHC-2TW4WSXeX6fuVbC1om5eMXD2eTij9CePtlhd2Nb4Ecir9Pgbbsim5Cf1vYAq3UpDHCs2I4sknMkacH0KM1_kkOd3MG5k6avgU1eippCAiQ2s1bAq3mPc1am0QpRO8WEdJesJ2EIg6oc6kmnBEMxe1v03uCa9fg4lq1mWCFAFGlLA\/s1494\/wz20b.webp\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1494\" data-original-width=\"963\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEivzVJ9-LOxHNBuHC-2TW4WSXeX6fuVbC1om5eMXD2eTij9CePtlhd2Nb4Ecir9Pgbbsim5Cf1vYAq3UpDHCs2I4sknMkacH0KM1_kkOd3MG5k6avgU1eippCAiQ2s1bAq3mPc1am0QpRO8WEdJesJ2EIg6oc6kmnBEMxe1v03uCa9fg4lq1mWCFAFGlLA\/w412-h640\/wz20b.webp\" width=\"412\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Micro electronically follows a bloody trail lefty by DX, starting in Madripoor and ending up at the Gambello compound.\u00a0 He determines that the next target will be the Gambello money man, Tony The Banker.\u00a0 Punisher suits up and heads out.<\/p>\n<p>As Punisher sets up an ambush for DX, we learn that DX had left the clues knowing Frank would follow them.\u00a0 The two former friends face off at Tony The Banker&#8217;s hideout.\u00a0 DX blows Frank&#8217;s ambush and a firefight ensues!\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the end, the only two Gambello&#8217;s left are Trish, the Capo&#8217;s enraged widow, and Tony.\u00a0 DX kills Tony, but is attacked by Trish.\u00a0 DX manages to escape Trish and Punisher.\u00a0 Trish vows revenge and Punisher tells her to stay out of the way.\u00a0 Next stop. . .Madripoor!<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><b>THE STORY:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>SCRIPT: Larry Hama<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>PENCILS: Hoang Nguyen<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>INKS: Hoang Nguyen &amp; Han Nguyen<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Punisher arrives in Madripoor and makes his way to the Princess Bar where he meets with the infamous Tyger Tyger.\u00a0 She gives him a lead to an arms dealer named Dog Meat Charlie.\u00a0 While dealing with Charlie, Frank meets a General Coy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Coy informs Punisher that not only is DX working for him, but that Trish Gambello is also in country and gunning for DX.\u00a0 Coy wants them both gone and makes a deal with Punisher to equip him and point him in the right direction.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhlaac4ImAFKhcHYrPExLBYczOkP9lhOHWy7kJBAcH4RION4f2UCljhcAB8C-71F4kGfkfZWNXhHUObBaD0duaVBc0558mdlCcBevuovpet1YTUv1xv_IFjtSLiiCpz4Xg2hmCvKEuYmGkRqO70gzLnPKCW3JLB7tvd0MIWtsUG_8EsOrl_ewHBTV5Gh4U\/s1402\/wz22a.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEiV6J0-iMwHK7aOvL_tIBcN39bJawg7xY9QjHUXpiRychV2iOIMVmf0hrgIVPe8GoxGuEzQJ9ZATNomMTLXcdtulIk9nHr6BWooHLTuh8T5ywpwrd37zJc3BNOgAQO8f2X9dehjB041wdrMHRjJR5X2sVkpTqazkCDVVK2xOauJc5v1EyDOEjO8ZDKJeKs\/s1512\/wz22b.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1512\" data-original-width=\"977\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEiV6J0-iMwHK7aOvL_tIBcN39bJawg7xY9QjHUXpiRychV2iOIMVmf0hrgIVPe8GoxGuEzQJ9ZATNomMTLXcdtulIk9nHr6BWooHLTuh8T5ywpwrd37zJc3BNOgAQO8f2X9dehjB041wdrMHRjJR5X2sVkpTqazkCDVVK2xOauJc5v1EyDOEjO8ZDKJeKs\/w414-h640\/wz22b.jpg\" width=\"414\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>DX finally gets the upper hand, but what he doesn&#8217;t know is that the Punisher found out that General Coy doesn&#8217;t want ANY loose ends and is sending a plane to drop napalm on all three of the thorns in his side. . .Punisher, DX, and Trish Gambrello.<\/p>\n<p>Punisher grabs a fire suit he had hidden, throws Gambrello over a cliff into the river, and dives in after her as the napalm sets the whole mountaintop ablaze.\u00a0 It looks like DX is done for, but Punisher and Trish make it out alive.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead of being grateful for the save, Trish swears revenge on Punisher for robbing her of revenge on DX.\u00a0 Punisher doesn&#8217;t seem to be too worried about it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEiBaNUNWTYr2ACKiNlwuvQ9nOsCGAzKgIhwQPPSeTgYpN6qG7HNJojknuKbBChIfH2BZhCqwF1_R-JsSnz_eJ3WAduGEaA3wn8Me28mXhObMkYU-R0bW91X8TRbHtKJAO_BUHoDkyoSLeAVMfnjlcrOfxd7iHXwbpjGtstE6-_zko3StY5qZycmNpUn4wI\/s1504\/wz22c.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1504\" data-original-width=\"959\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEiBaNUNWTYr2ACKiNlwuvQ9nOsCGAzKgIhwQPPSeTgYpN6qG7HNJojknuKbBChIfH2BZhCqwF1_R-JsSnz_eJ3WAduGEaA3wn8Me28mXhObMkYU-R0bW91X8TRbHtKJAO_BUHoDkyoSLeAVMfnjlcrOfxd7iHXwbpjGtstE6-_zko3StY5qZycmNpUn4wI\/w408-h640\/wz22c.jpg\" width=\"408\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The End.<\/p>\n<p><b>THE REVIEW:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Thank God THAT one is done with!\u00a0 Like I said in the review of the previous issue, the story by Larry Hama is solid . .Punisher tracking down an old friend turned enemy that&#8217;s caused him some problems, then getting involved in a double cross with an explosive finale.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a pretty good story.<\/p>\n<p>The only problem I have with the story is that it&#8217;s a bit derivative of the second story arc a bit in that we have the widow of a murdered mob figure going after revenge. . .and ALSO like that arc (and pretty much every arc in this series so far), she&#8217;s set up as a future antagonist and we never hear from Trish Gambrello again.<\/p>\n<p>But the REAL problem with this arc was the terrible art.\u00a0 And as bad as it was in the first two issues of the story, the art in THIS issue is even worse.\u00a0 Some of the pages even look like they&#8217;re only half-finished:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; He&#8217;s emotionless, with almost no memory of his past, and feels almost no pain. . .somehow due to being left for dead in a frozen lake.<\/p>\n<p>The one thing Thorn DOES remember clearly are the two men who &#8220;killed&#8221; him.\u00a0 He makes his way to New York City to find Mickey Fondozzi and &#8220;Johnny Tower&#8221; AKA Frank Castle.\u00a0 He finds Mickey first.\u00a0 Fondozzi recognizes the &#8220;dead&#8221; man and barely survives the attack.\u00a0 He calls the Punisher.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; man, but learns it&#8217;s true when Thorn attacks them both at the bar where they&#8217;re meeting.\u00a0 A brutal gun battle running through the streets of New York City ensues, with a gang chasing Thorn, trying to get back the stolen car filled with illegal guns Thorn used to get to New York.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Punisher and Thorn fight off the gang, and then return to trying to kill each other.\u00a0 Punisher finally gets the upper hand and shoves Thorn off of a highway overpass into traffic, killing him for SURE this time.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1504\" data-original-width=\"957\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEiqxxELkiYOH9ZNs9-_b8e5O21vmVnqG_yIIiBiQZwdb1jtTua9sr2rzggtlrqaxhGmAcOr-sHs1FBMUJyBnvHywHVJO12z9dSQP8STskvIGhDBSd4dunhrAjQFMt1PAqiyNnMgoygTADJJHZPA98FXw-GYtU9RUyi5URngPkuChSvWx0_CiqcD3hMPVWA\/w408-h640\/wzannual2g.jpg\" width=\"408\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The End.<\/p>\n<p><b>THE REVIEW:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A very nice little short story!\u00a0 A bit of &#8220;Pride goes before the fall&#8221;, Punisher style.\u00a0 Probably the best story in this Annual, in my humble opinion.\u00a0 It just goes to show that you don&#8217;t need a lot of pages to tell a decent story.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, this Annual was a pretty darn good read.\u00a0 The middle story was the weakest, but it wasn&#8217;t bad, it just wasn&#8217;t really much of a story.\u00a0 I like that two out of three of the stories in here were callbacks to the second story arc of War Zone.\u00a0 \u00a0One of the negatives of this series so far is the wasted potential of possible returning enemies left dangling as new creative teams come on board.\u00a0 This Annual was an interesting nod in that direction.<\/p>\n<p>So that&#8217;s it for Part 3 of my Longbox Junk look at Punisher: War Zone.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s break it on down!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><b><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\">CONCLUSION<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>I mentioned in my introduction above that one of the things I thought was holding War Zone back was the rotating roster of creative teams not allowing the series to get a strong foothold, with dangling plot threads left behind in basically every story arc.<\/p>\n<p>I did a bit more research into the series (and there&#8217;s really not TOO much information to be found) and discovered that they were actually going for an anthology-style format in War Zone.\u00a0 The stories are supposed to be disconnected from any sort of ongoing continuity (except for the crossover issues), not supposed to be in any particular order, and are from various periods of\u00a0 Punisher&#8217;s &#8220;career&#8221;.\u00a0 Sort of like Legends of The Dark Knight with Batman over at DC (one of my all-time favorite comic series, by the way).<\/p>\n<p>Now that I know that, I see War Zone a bit differently than I did before.\u00a0 They weren&#8217;t completely successful in what they were trying to do, but at least I have more of an understanding of why everything seems completely disconnected every time a new creative team steps in, and why they were rotating different writers and artists with each new story arc.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Marvel didn&#8217;t make the anthology concept clear for readers at the time, and I had to dig a little to find out what they were trying to do.\u00a0 In 1994, that digging wouldn&#8217;t have been so easy, with the internet just beginning to become the information highway it is now.\u00a0 So I also have a bit more understanding of why this series wasn&#8217;t as popular as the other two ongoing Punisher titles.\u00a0 It had a concept behind it that Marvel wasn&#8217;t exactly advertising.<\/p>\n<p>THAT ASIDE. . .<\/p>\n<p>This third batch of Punisher: War Zone issues was a bit of a roller coaster ride.\u00a0 It has some of the best art (Buscema), and some of the worst art (Nguyen).\u00a0 It has what I consider the best story of the series so far (The Dixon\/Buscema Caribbean five parter), but also some pretty mediocre stuff signaling a mid-series slump (All the Larry Hama issues, including the Suicide Run crossover).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Overall, except for Nguyen&#8217;s art, there&#8217;s nothing in this batch of issues that&#8217;s bad.\u00a0 I think I can mostly chalk that up to Chuck Dixon and John Buscema coming in to save the series from sagging in the middle.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve reviewed comic runs that have gone completely off the rails LONG before issue #30, so the fact that War Zone is still hitting some high points even this far into it says something good about the series.<\/p>\n<p>But now the question becomes. . .Can War Zone stay the course?\u00a0 There&#8217;s only ten more issues to go.\u00a0 This batch was saved by Dixon and Buscema, but what happens next?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Find out when I wrap this Longbox Junk series review up with Part Four!\u00a0 Be there or be square!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Welcome to Longbox Junk, the place to find all the comic reviews you never asked for!
