Now Cain said to his brother Abel, \u201cLet\u2019s go out to the field.\u201d While they<\/span><\/p>\n

were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. Then the<\/span><\/p>\n

LORD said to Cain, \u201cWhere is your brother Abel?\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d he<\/span><\/p>\n

replied. \u201cAm I my brother\u2019s keeper?\u201d Genesis 4: 8-9<\/span><\/p>\n

The Bible records the first horrific act of family violence in the story of Cain<\/span><\/p>\n

killing his brother Abel. God saw the anger that Cain was mistakenly<\/span><\/p>\n

harboring towards Abel and God talked with Cain. God told Cain that he<\/span><\/p>\n

had an opportunity to correct his mistake. Consumed by jealousy he<\/span><\/p>\n

refused to change. Cain continued to make Abel the target of his wrath.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cain chose rage over reason. He overpowered and killed his unsuspecting<\/span><\/p>\n

and innocent brother.<\/span><\/p>\n

Everything in creation was affected by Cain\u2019s solitary action. Cain\u2019s<\/span><\/p>\n

violence brought death to Abel, the disapproval of God, grief to the parents<\/span><\/p>\n

and a disillusioned life of hardship to himself. Even the earth found itself an<\/span><\/p>\n

unwilling participant as it was forced to receive Abel\u2019s blood.<\/span><\/p>\n

Family violence has never been a confidential matter between the abuser<\/span><\/p>\n

and the abused. It disrupts life on so many levels and causes physical,<\/span><\/p>\n

mental, emotional and social pain to everyone. The injured party is no<\/span><\/p>\n

longer able to contribute to society as a fully functional member offering her<\/span><\/p>\n

\/ his gifts to a world that needs them. Family violence causes emotional<\/span><\/p>\n

wounds to those who may not be the direct focus of aggression, but are still<\/span><\/p>\n

exposed to a violent environment. Family violence mentally impairs the<\/span><\/p>\n

perpetrator, who drowns out the voices of God, wisdom, and reason to not inflict pain<\/span><\/p>\n

on another human being. Family violence stamps out potential for future<\/span><\/p>\n

generations as it did to Abel. Family violence is usually carried out in secret<\/span><\/p>\n

and private behind closed doors, but it does not remain in one place.<\/span><\/p>\n

How do we stop these insidious actions? Educate! We do so by shining<\/span><\/p>\n

light on this topic. Educate the survivors that they are just that, a prey of<\/span><\/p>\n

someone else\u2019s unacceptable behaviour, not a cause of it. Abel was not the<\/span><\/p>\n

cause of Cain\u2019s behaviour. Cain\u2019s irrational jealousy and anger towards<\/span><\/p>\n

Abel was of his own making. Educate the perpetrator that he\/she has a<\/span><\/p>\n

choice to consider the other as a person with dignity more than as an<\/span><\/p>\n

object of abuse. In essence, God told Cain that he was responsible for his<\/span><\/p>\n

own behaviour and could change the outcome of his life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Educate the community that family violence affects everyone, not just the<\/span><\/p>\n

persons being abused. The effects of family violence touch everyone<\/span><\/p>\n

because each person brings unique talents to a community and is not able<\/span><\/p>\n

to do so when cowering in fear and hiding. Educate the community that we<\/span><\/p>\n

all have a responsibility to acknowledge the fact that family violence takes<\/span><\/p>\n

place in every community regardless of socioeconomic standing. Educate<\/span><\/p>\n

our young children that they are worthy human beings who do not deserve<\/span><\/p>\n

to be abused. Educate them to take responsibility for their actions not to<\/span><\/p>\n

harm others in actions or words. Educate our lawmakers that family<\/span><\/p>\n

violence damages all aspects of our community. The abusers must feel the<\/span><\/p>\n

weight of justice. As God demanded Cain to take responsibility for his<\/span><\/p>\n

actions, so we, as a society, must hold each other accountable for how we<\/span><\/p>\n
